Quick Read Yes Women Can Get Kidney Stones

What a kidney stone looks like!
  • Kidney stones are being diagnosed in women at increasing rates.
  • Obesity, diabetes and associated conditions increase kidney stone risk in women.
  • Other risk factors include climate change and hot, dry climates.

While youve likely heard of kidney stones , theres a lot of misconceptions about these pebble-like deposits.

Kidney stones are hard formations that develop in your kidneys when there is a high concentration of substances like calcium, oxalate, uric acid and phosphorus in your urine. They can vary in color, density, location and shape, and range in size from as small as a grain of sand to, in rare cases, as large as a spikey golf ball.

Perhaps the most common misconception is that kidney stones only happen to men, but this is simply not true. Around 11% of men and 6% of women are diagnosed with kidney stones in their lifetime, and this gender gap is closing as women are diagnosed at increasing rates.

While some of this is likely due to improved sensitivity of imaging even tiny, symptom-free stones can be seen with todays advanced technology much of the increase can likely be attributed to common health-related challenges: our ongoing obesity epidemic and the health challenges posed by our diets and sedentary lifestyles.

Why Would You Need A Stent

If a fatty substance called plaque builds up inside an artery, it can reduce blood flow to your heart. This is called coronary heart disease and it can cause chest pain.

The plaque can also cause a blood clot that blocks blood flowing to your heart, which may lead to a heart attack.

By keeping an artery open, stents lower your risk of chest pain. They can also treat a heart attack thats in progress.

What Is The Recovery Time After A Stent Placement

Itll take about a week to recover from stent placement. Check with your provider to find out how active youre allowed to be for the next few days. The instructions vary depending on whether you had a catheter in your arm or your groin area.

Your provider will prescribe antiplatelet drugs for you to take to prevent blood clots in your stent. Youll take aspirin and/or clopidogrel, ticagrelor or prasugrel. Depending on your risk of bleeding, you may take these medicines for a month, several months or a year or more. Its very important that you take these medicines to keep blood clots from happening.

When Should A Kidney Stone Be Treated

When a kidney stone causes pain to the extent that the pain cannot be controlled with oral pain medication, the stone should be treated. Similarly, stones that are associated with severe nausea or vomiting should be treated. Some stones are associated with infection or fever such situations can be life threatening and demand prompt attention. Stones that are associated with a solitary kidney, poor overall kidney function or complete blockage of urine flow should also all be treated.

Sometimes, when a stone is associated with bothersome symptoms, it may be appropriate to wait and see if the stone will pass on its own. If the stone is small, this is a very reasonable course of action. However, stones larger in size than 5 mm are unlikely to pass on their own and should be considered for treatment.

What Are The Most Common Types Of Kidney Stones

7mm kidney stone. Just passed.

The most common type of kidney stone is a calcium oxalate stone. This type happens when calcium and oxalate combine in your urine. It can happen when you have high quantities of oxalate, low amounts of calcium and arent drinking enough fluids.

How Are Kidney Stones Treated

Once diagnosed, your healthcare provider will first determine if you even need treatment. Some smaller kidney stones may leave your system when you urinate. This can be very painful. If your provider decides that you do need treatment, your options include medications and surgery.

Medications. Medications may be prescribed to:

  • Your healthcare provider may recommend that you take an over-the-counter medication like ibuprofen or, if youre in the emergency room, an IV narcotic.
  • Manage nausea/vomiting.
  • Relax your ureter so that the stones pass. Commonly prescribed medicines include tamsulosin and nifedipine .

You should ask your healthcare provider before you take ibuprofen. This drug can increase the risk of kidney failure if taken while youre having an acute attack of kidney stones especially in those who have a history of kidney disease and associated illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

Surgery. There are four types of surgeries used to treat kidney stones. The first three are minimally invasive, meaning that the surgeon enters your body through a natural opening , or makes a small incision.

How To Remove Your Stent

What a Kidney Stone Looks Like
  • Wash and clean your hands thoroughly
  • It is important to try and relax. This will make removal easier.
  • Take hold of the string and with a firm, steady motion, pull the stent until it is out. Remember that it is approximately 25-30 cm long. This will feel uncomfortable but it should not be painful.
  • Once the stent is removed you will probably experience some pain the next time you pass urine and you may also notice blood in your urine. This is quite normal and it will pass.

Make sure you drink enough fluid to keep your urine a pale yellow colour. This will reduce the likelihood of blood clots in your urine.

If you feel that you are unable to remove the stent by yourself, dont be concerned. Contact Urology Associates and arrange a time to have the stent removed by a nurse.

    Risk Factors You Can Control

Drinking too little water is the most common cause of kidney stones. Diet also plays an important role. Eating a lot of animal protein, sodium, and high-oxalate foods, such as chocolate or dark green vegetables, can boost the risk for kidney stones in some people. Other risk factors include drinking sweetened beverages, putting on weight, and taking certain medications.

Time Needed For Passing Kidney Stones

The size of kidney stones determine the time needed for their removal from the kidneys. Smaller the size of a stone, the faster it can pass through the urinary tract. For example, a 2mm stones may pass through the kidneys in about 12 days but stones of size 4mm can take about 30 days to pass out.

Symptoms Of The Sand In The Kidneys

Symptoms of sand in the kidneys do not always have a pronounced clinical picture. At the beginning of the disease the patient feels symptoms of general malaise, minor weakness, swelling of the face in the morning, it is possible to form darkish circles under the eyes.

In the course of the development of the disease, the first signs appear, clearly indicating a kidney disease. They include:

  • Drawing pains in the lumbar region, which are localized on both sides or only on one side.
  • Rapid or vice versa, decreased urination.
  • The appearance of a characteristic sediment in the urine.
  • Change in color of urine is not related to nutrition.
  • Sand in the kidneys and blood during urination indicate damage to the walls of the organs of the urinary system. This is due to the fact that some types of salts have sharp edges. This condition is fraught with negative complications right up to the development of anemia.

Usually fine sand, unlike stones and large crystals, does not cause a person inconvenience.

Kidney stones can provoke renal colic. Renal colic is accompanied by severe pain and discomfort. The mechanism of development of renal colic is associated with a violation of urinary outflow from the kidney due to clogging with a stone. This leads to the dilatation of the renal pelvis and to disturb the renal circulation.

Once the underlying condition that caused blockage of the ureter is resolved and the ureter is healed, the stent can be removed. Kidney stent removal is a short procedure.

The stent is removed using a cystoscope, usually under local anesthesia. Sometimes a stent can be left with a thread attached to its lower end that stays outside the body through the urethra. The doctors can remove such stents by just pulling this thread.
