Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once or twice daily. If you are taking this medication once daily, it is usually taken right before bedtime.

Subsequently, question is, is it better to take Pepcid in the morning or at night? PEPCID AC® provides heartburn relief that starts working in minutes, and controls acid all day or all night,* but it can even prevent heartburn if taken 15 to 60 minutes before a meal. *Based on 9-hour acid control studies during the day and 12-hour acid control studies during the night.

Consequently, what time of day should I take famotidine?

Famotidine can be taken with or without food. To prevent heartburn and acid indigestion, take famotidine 15-60 minutes before eating food or drinking beverages that can cause indigestion. Do not take more than 2 tablets in 24 hours unless directed by your doctor.

Can you take famotidine in the morning?

Take famotidine exactly as your doctor tells you to. There are two different strengths of tablet available – 20 mg and 40 mg. You may be prescribed famotidine to take twice a day, in the morning and evening, or just once daily in the evening.

Any Validity To Ppis And Kidney Stones

A study published in the journal Nutrients discussed a link between PPIs and kidney stones.

The authors note:

Within the PPI cohort, patients who received the following PPIs as monotherapy had a significant increase in the frequency of nephrolithiasis reports: omeprazole , esomeprazole , pantoprazole , and lansoprazole .

That means people taking omeprazole, lansoprazole or pantoprazole were at least three times more likely than those not on such drugs to report kidney stones. Read more about PPIs and kidney damage at this link:

If You Have Kidney Disease Other Medications Can Be Harmful

If your kidneys are already damaged, certain drugs can make them worse or lead to kidney failure. Talk to your doctor before taking cholesterol or diabetes medication, antacid medicine for an upset stomach, or antimicrobial meds, like antifungal and antiviral drugs. In some cases, you may be able to take a smaller dose that’s safer for you.

You also should talk to your doctor before having some kinds of imaging tests. With a magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography scan, doctors sometimes use a dye to help them see a specific area of your body better. In rare cases, this dye can cause serious conditions called contrast-induced nephropathy or nephrogenic systemic fibrosis . Ask your doctor about other tests you might have instead.

Ppis And Kidney Stones

We received an intriguing letter from Joseph in Mechanicsville, VA. It was not about PPIs and kidney damage but it was about PPIs and kidney stones.

I started on Prevacid for an ulcer in 1998 at the age of 32. Then the reflux that I had frequently experienced since my early teenage years increased in frequency and intensity, so my gastroenterologist kept me on Prevacid and then Prilosec due to a change in my insurance for the next 18 years. It worked very well controlling my GERD.

Then when the news broke about all of the issues with PPIs, I weaned myself off Prilosec and started taking famotidine with great success. I remain on it today to control my GERD.

The interesting thing is that I had two kidney stones prior to starting on PPIs in 1998 , but during the 18 years I was on PPIs, I had ten more stones.

Since I stopped Prilosec two years ago, I have not had another stone. The only dietary change I made during all those stone years was eliminating nearly all oxylates for one year, and I still got a stone during that year, so I returned to my normal diet and continued getting stones. I find this new information about the link between kidney stones and PPIs to apparently be true in my case.

What Are Proton Pump Inhibitors

Too much of this vitamin can lead to kidney stones!

Proton pump inhibitors also known as PPIs are a class of prescription and over-the-counter medications designed to treat heartburn, acid reflux, ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease , and other stomach conditions caused by too much stomach acid.

The stomach contains a mechanism known as the proton pump, which is responsible for producing stomach acid. PPIs work by blocking the activity of an enzyme in the proton pump, which reduces the amount of acid produced by the stomach.

Originally, PPI medications such as Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, and Nexium were sold only as prescription drugs. Today, these medications are available in over-the-counter formulations, as well as generic prescription versions.

Kidney Impairment Can Be Costly

Although renal impairment is often reversible if the offending drug is discontinued, the condition can be costly and may require multiple interventions, including hospitalization, Dr. Naughton explained. To help you avoid getting to that point, we learned about medications that commonly cause kidney damage from Rebekah Krupski, PharmD, RPh, pharmacy resident at the Cleveland Clinic and clinical instructor of pharmacy practice at Northeast Ohio Medical University.

    Child dosage

This drug hasnt been studied in children under 1 year of age for the treatment of this condition.

    Senior dosage

The kidneys of older adults may not work as well as they used to. This can cause your body to process drugs more slowly. As a result, more of a drug stays in your body for a longer time. This raises your risk of side effects. Your doctor may start you on a lowered dose or a different dosing schedule. This can help keep levels of this drug from building up too much in your body.

    Special considerations

People with moderate or severe kidney disease: Your doctor may decrease your dose of this drug by half. Or they may have you take one dose every 3648 hours instead of every day.

Ppis Can Change The Way Other Drugs Work

    Pin on Kidney Problems

PPIs interact with some common prescription drugs. For example, some PPIs can reduce the blood-thinning effect of the drug Plavix , according to the US Food and Drug Administration. This can increase the risk of heart attack and even death. If you take Plavix, talk to your doctor about whether you should take a PPI.

Potential Risk Could Outweigh Benefit Of Taking The Medication Study’s Author Says

Popular heartburn medications taken by millions of Canadians could lead to long-term kidney damage without any warning, a new study suggests.

The drugs, called proton pump inhibitors , reduce the symptoms of heartburn by lowering the amount of acid in the stomach. They include the brand names Losec, Nexium, and Prevacid.

Doctors previously monitored patients for acute kidney problems, such as decreased urination, swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet, and nausea. Such symptoms were thought to be a warning of more permanent kidney damage, and would often result in doctors taking patients off the drugs.

But the latest research, in the journal Kidney International, shows this isn’t always the case.

The active ingredient omeprazole works to fight heartburn differently from treatments like acid controllers/H2s or antacids. One of the best benefits of omeprazole is experiencing heartburn relief for 24 hours after only taking 1 pill a day.* But its not the only benefit. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor and PPIs are the strongest class of frequent heartburn medicines.

    Warnings For Other Groups

For pregnant women: Famotidine is a category B pregnancy drug. That means two things:

  • Research in animals has not shown a risk to the fetus when the mother takes the drug.
  • There arent enough studies done in humans to show if the drug poses a risk to the fetus.
  • Talk to your doctor if youre pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Animal studies do not always predict the way humans would respond. Therefore, this drug should only be used in pregnancy if clearly needed.

For women who are breastfeeding: Famotidine may pass into breast milk and may cause side effects in a child who is breastfed. Talk to your doctor if you breastfeed your child. You may need to decide whether to stop breastfeeding or stop taking this medication.

For seniors: The kidneys of older adults may not work as well as they used to. This can cause your body to process drugs more slowly. As a result, more of a drug stays in your body for a longer time. This raises your risk of side effects.

    For children:

    • Famotidine can be used in children of all ages for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease .
