A Glass Of Purple Grape Juice A Day

Jan. 14, 2000 — Drinking purple grape juice results in reduced platelet aggregation, one of several steps thought to be important in the formation of blood clots that may lead to heart attacks, reports a study in the January issue of the Journal of Nutrition. “I don’t think we’ve come anywhere close to recommending to people that they start drinking purple grape juice to reduce their heart disease risk,” says Jon Keevel, MD, a cardiology fellow at the University of Wisconsin and lead author of the study, in an interview with WebMD. “But we may be one step closer to figuring out why very large studies show a decreased risk of heart disease when someone consumes lots of fruits and vegetables.”

People who participated in this study consumed an average of two cups a day of grape, orange, or grapefruit juice for one week, followed by a week of no juice consumption, then a switch to one of the other types of juice. Everyone consumed each type of juice, and their blood was analyzed for the effect the juice had on their platelets. Says Keevel, “We saw a pretty impressive reduction in platelet aggregation of 77% in people who drank purple grape juice. In contrast, we saw no reduction when people were drinking either grapefruit or orange juice.”

Grapefruit And Kidney Disease And Medications

    By Mathea Ford

I got a question this week about grapefruits and kidney disease. Recently in the news, a lot of information has come out about how medications and grapefruit juice or grapefruits interact. Some news even suggesting that they cause kidney damage or sudden death.

As a registered dietitian, I have known for many years that certain medications interact with grapefruit juice and it’s recommended to not consume grapefruit juice with these medications. That’s one of the reasons I know that many hospitals do not even place grapefruit juice on their menus, because of the myriad of medications that can be affected by it.

But let me take a moment and explain to you what the new research is showing and help you understand what it’s trying to say so that you can make a good decision about grapefruit juice and kidney disease.

The research shows that over the past four years since 2008, the number of medications with the potential to interact with grapefruits and cause serious adverse effects increased to 43 medications. Those serious adverse effects can include sudden death, acute kidney failure, respiratory failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, bone marrow suppression in people with compromised immune systems, kidney toxicity and other serious side effects. Here is the research article:

Is Lemon Good To Reduce Creatinine

For a person with high levels of creatinine, consuming lemon would have minimal impact on reducing creatinine levels but it also wont increase the creatinine as well.

Creatinine is a waste chemical product that is a by-product of the wear and tear of our muscles. The more muscles a person has the more creatinine will be present in the blood.

The volume of creatinine cleared by the kidneys is known as creatinine clearance. In a person with a healthy kidney, creatinine clearance ranges from 95 ml per minute for females and about 120 ml for males.

It basically means that your kidneys are responsible for excreting out creatinine from 95 to 120 ml of blood so that it does not build up in excess in the blood.

The creatinine clearance can depend on age, size, and the condition of the kidneys.

Therefore, consuming lemon juice or lemon water for a person with high creatinine levels would have a neutral effect which means its neither good nor bad on creatinine levels.

    Potential Risks Of Grape Juice

Grape juice offers many health benefits but is high in natural sugar and calories. Some people may need to be especially careful with the beverage and only drink it in moderation.

    High Blood Sugar

Grape juice contains natural sugars, not the artificial sweeteners or refined sugar found in soda. However, one cup of grape juice contains 36 grams of sugar and almost no fiber, so it can cause your blood sugar to spike.

If you have diabetes or need to watch your blood sugar for any reason, ask your doctor whether you need to avoid or reduce your typical serving of fruit juice. Whole grapes may be a better option, as they contain fiber and may not be as likely to cause a rise in blood sugar.

    Weight Gain

Grape juice can be a healthy alternative when trying to kick the soda habit. High-calorie drinks like fruit juice are easy to overdo, though, so consider portion size when pouring a glass. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends limiting juice to a half-cup serving per day.

Do Not Smoke Or Drink Too Much Alcohol

Try to stop smoking completely and limit the amount of alcohol you drink.

Both men and women are advised not to drink more than 14 units of alcohol a week on a regular basis.

Drinking too much alcohol and smoking both raise your blood pressure. High blood pressure is one of the most common causes of kidney disease.

Herbal Kidney Cleanse How Much Water A Day

It is very important to drink a gallon of water a day when doing a herbal kidney cleanse with diuretic herbs. If you dont you can rob your body of needed water and cause added complications.

A kidney cleanse helps to flush excess uric acid out of the body, which can be helpful if you have gout. If you dont drink enough water using diuretics can make gout symptoms worse because the uric acid will become even more concentrated in the bloodstream. It is very important to drink a gallon of water a day while doing this kidney cleanse.

Even while not doing a kidney cleanse it is important to drink proper amounts of water to maintain healthy kidneys. The Institute of Medicine indicated in a report that the general recommendations for men are approximately 3.7 liters of total water, and for women are approximately 2.7 liters of total water from all beverages and foods each day. The panel did not set an upper level for water.

    Grape Juice & Heart Burn

Here too, there are no studies to support or deny grape juice will help or hurt. Most doctors do not believe that grape juice causes or cures heart burn. Various trials have shown virtually no reaction in various people.

Thats because grape juice is nearly all water and sugar.

For many people, youll find sugary foods are well tolerated because they are easily broken down and dont trouble the stomach.

Wine, on the other hand, can cause heart burn. Use caution if you experience heart burn and want to add wine to your health regime.

One thing that has been shown to help, a study was conducted on aloe vera extract. The extract was placed in grape juice to allow the sugary taste to overwhelm the bitterness of the aloe. This study on aloe was replicated using various juices and supplements, so we know it was the aloe that helped people and not the grape juice.

    There Are Some Cautions

For ANYONE opting to use juicing in place of eating whole fruits and vegetables, there are also some disadvantages or cautions associated with it:

  • You lose fiber. When the pulp of the fruit or vegetable is extracted during the juicing process the fiber is lost. Fiber creates more bulk in the stomach, curbing hunger and fiber reduces the likelihood of constipation.
  • Fruit and vegetable juices are more concentrated in natural sugar content than the whole fruit or vegetables therefore, people with blood sugar problems must limit their intake of many fruit and vegetable juices due to this higher natural sugar content.
  • Juicing is not meant to replace all meals for a long period of time, as it will not provide a balance of all the nutrients our bodies need.
  • We miss out on the sheer enjoyment of eatingchewing satisfaction is lost when we drink our fruits and vegetables.
  • Additional cautions should be taken for those with decreased kidney function:

  • People with normal kidney function do not have to limit fluids. For someone with decreased kidney function, fluids may need to be limited, making it difficult to use juicing as a way to get the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables.
  • Some juicing recipes use canned tomato or vegetable juice which can be high in sodium content. Many people with reduced kidney function must limit sodium intake.
