Even children learn to differentiate roosters from hens by their mostly more colorful feathers and their impressive red comb. But if you have ever looked at the other end of their body, you will have seen nothing.
Roosters do have testicles, but these are located inside their body! Two testes shaped like kidney beans are found in front of their kidneys against their backbones. This makes castrating or caponizing male chickens such a difficult and painful procedure.

Like more than 90% of all bird species, roosters do not have a penis. Instead, they inject sperm into hens in a process known as the cloacal kiss probably one the least appealing descriptions of sexual intercourse ever! In a roosters cloaca, there are two papillae at the end of ducts that transport sperm from the internal testicles outwards.
Roosters can control how much sperm they release during every mating act, so they can ration themselves when fulfilling their duty of fertilizing ten to fifteen hens a day.

‘epic Photo’: Huntsman Spider Eats Pygmy Possum In Australia
Its a fairly rare event, arachnology expert says, as its more common to see huntsman eat small birds or frogs. Prepare for Tasmanias spider possum
Pygmy possums usually arent on the menu for huntsman spiders.
But an Australian man from Tasmania has captured the rare moment a huntsman attempted to devour a tiny possum at a lodge in the Mount Field national park, 64 km north-west of Hobart.
Justine Latton posted the photo her husband took, devoted to Tasmanian spiders and insects.
Australia Museum arachnology collection manager Graham Milledge said it was an unusual event.
It would be fairly rare, he told the Guardian. Its the first time Ive seen a pygmy possum as prey. He said it was more common to see huntsman eat small birds, frogs and geckos.
Tasmania is home to two types of pygmy possums the little pygmy and the eastern pygmy.
The eastern pygmy can grow to between 15 grams and 43 grams in weight which is less than a golf ball, with a body length of 7-11 centimetres.
Charles Darwin University conservation biology professor John Woinarski said it was likely to be an eastern pygmy.
There are some habitat differences between the two species, and eastern pygmy possum is more likely to occur in alpine and subalpine habitats, such as Mt Field, Woinarski said.
While some Facebook users were terrified of the prospect of possum-eating spiders, others were overcome by the wonder of nature.
Can Eating A Spider Make A Dog Sick
The fact is that your dog will probably eat his fair share of insects and most of them arent going to cause a problem. If your dog eats a brown recluse spider or a black widow, it could be very dangerous. In most cases, however, it will simply be a harmless house spider and there wont be any negative reaction.

Huntsman Spiders: The Colossal Creepy
These massive, crab-like spiders can have a leg span of up to 25 to 30cm.
They normally live in small gaps in tree bark, but frequently wander into homes and cars in search of food. They move at lightning speed, can walk on walls and even ceilings, and jump huge distances suddenly.
Unlike other types of spider, they go out to stalk and kill their prey instead of spinning webs, feasting on insects and small animals like mice and lizards.
You dont want to make a mummy huntsman angry they defend their young fiercely, attacking and biting those who threaten them.
If theyre touched, they have a cling reflex and will hang on tightly. Shaking them off doesnt work, but does make them angry and likely to bite.
Although usually found in the Southern Hemisphere, they have been known to stow away in cargo and arrive unexpectedly in Europe. They wouldnt last long in the winter cold of the UK though.
Despite their scary appearance and aggression, they shouldnt cause too much alarm their venom isnt deadly to humans, although it has been known to cause headaches, vomiting, and heart palpitations.
What Do Huntsman Eat
The huntsman runs after or ambushes its prey, killing it with venom and strong mouthparts, called the chelicerae. Once captured, the prey will be injected with deadly venom from glands within the spider’s body, according the University of Florida. The huntsman can also be a valuable spider because it eats cockroaches, in addition to other spiders and domestic insect pests.

Huntsman are not deadly to humans. According to the Australian Reptile Park, although huntsman are venomous and their bites can be painful to humans, they do not cause anything more serious than mild nausea or headaches. Usually localized swelling and pain are the only symptoms of a huntsman spider bite.

Can Dogs Get Bit By Spiders
These bites are not always painful and symptoms start with itchiness. However, the venom can eventually cause a serious wound requiring treatment by a veterinarian. Look for the following symptoms that your dog or cat has been bitten by a spider: Limping or holding one leg off of the floor.
Onions, garlic, chives, and leeks are part of the Allium family and are poisonous to both dogs and cats.
Certain breeds and species are more sensitive, including cats and Japanese breeds of dogs .
Size Venom And Aggression
On average, a huntsman spider’s leg-span can reach up to 15cm, while their bodies measure about 1.8cm long.
Like most spiders, Sparassidae use venom to immobilize prey. They have been known to inflict serious defensive bites on humans.
There have been reports of members of various genera such as Palystes,Neosparassus and several others, inflicting severe bites. The effects vary, including local swelling and pain, nausea, headache, vomiting, irregular pulse rate, and heart palpitations, indicating some systemic neurological toxin effects, especially when the bites were severe or repeated. However, the formal study of spider bites is fraught with complications, including unpredictable infections, dry bites, shock, nocebo effects, and even bite misdiagnosis by medical professionals and specimen misidentification by the general public.
It is not always clear what provokes Sparassidae to attack and bite humans and animals, but it is known that female members of this family will aggressively defend their egg-sacs and young against perceived threats. Bites from sparassids usually do not require hospital treatment.

Mild and juicy, chicken meat is a favorite of many people. When looking closer at where the meat we eat comes from, pictures both of factory farming and free-range farms show an abundance of female chickens with often no roosters in sight. Do people eat roosters? Are roosters even edible?

Households that raise hens only for their eggs, do not need a rooster at all, since hens lay eggs without a rooster. The male counterpart is only needed when the eggs are supposed to be fertilized and hatched. What is not there cannot be eaten, and raising roosters simply for eating them seems like an unnecessary amount of effort and financial investment when hens are all that somebody needs.

However, there was a suspicious omission, one spider not on that list, one spider thats uncannily Australian, hideously fearsome looking, the terrifying but often misunderstood, huntsman. Certainly no other spider elicits the fearful response that huntsmans are greeted with. Their brown hairy legs evoke images of bird eating spiders in the amazon, whilst their beady eyes are reminiscent of Aliens bent on invading earth.
The Huntsman spider is unlike most spiders, in that it doesnt make a web. It wanders around looking for prey, which is where it gets its name the Huntsman, as it goes a hunting. Because of this method of catching food, its more likely than other spiders to cross paths with humans, simply because it wanders around a larger area, rather than remaining hidden in a web in a corner of the house. All that aside . Are they dangerous though?
Ok, theyre not venomous, and are unlikely to bite, what danger to they pose? Well, aside from swerving off the road in fright as one crawls across the windscreen, their unlikely to pose much harm at all.

Do Huntsman Spiders Chase You
These spiders are venomous but have very mild venom which is not considered dangerous to humans. Most are very reluctant to bite, and will attempt to run away from any threats they encounter. Contrary to popular belief, huntsman spiders do not chase people. They do not see like we do, and cannot see us from a distance.
Some Huntsman Spiders Are Surprisingly Social
Linda has documented there are four species that defy the primarily solitary existence of their kind. They are social. Delena Cancerides gives a good demonstration of what this means as they live in large family groups.
There is mum, the largest breeding female, who has found a cosy bark retreat, usually on a black wattle tree. She has defended it against others who want the retreat for themselves. With her, there are three to four clutches of siblings, all of different ages. During the day, they hide out in the retreat. Of an evening, individuals head out to ambush and bring back their prey. Surprisingly, the siblings share their prey with each other.
If youve got 30, 60 animals, a hundred animals staying together for a year, youve got social animals, says Linda. They are staying together until they reach sexual maturity.
Family members of Delena cancerides also defend each other. Linda explains brothers and sisters protect themselves and their siblings against predators. This family dynamic means the next generations have a greater chance of surviving to the age where you will have the ability to reproduce yourself or to try and go out and find a retreat and establish your own colony, says Linda.

Is The Huntsman Spider Dangerous
Yes, if you are an insect or maybe even a small lizard or gecko. They sometimes even eat cockroaches in my book that makes him a good guy! But harmful to humans? No. A bite from a Huntsman spider on a human may cause some local swelling and a little bit of pain, but it would be gone within a day or two. But the Huntsman is very timid and way too scared of humans.
Expect him to run away, and fast!
Update:In the comments below, Drew . a on November 26, 2017 pointed out that he had been bitten by a Huntsman and that his experience was much worse than I have suggested it would be here. From everything Ive read, a painful reaction and certainly one that has effects lasting longer than a couple of days is very rare.
In particular, my Wildlife of Greater Brisbane book, which is produced by the Queensland Museum describes the bite of a Brown Huntsman Spider as Mild local pain sometimes redness, itchiness and minor swelling.
You can read more about the bite of the Huntsman in my response to Drew . a where you will find a link to a medical study PDF. There are some references on some websites claiming that the bite from a particular species of Huntsman can be dangerous to humans, but this same medical report appears to refute those suggestions.
I still recommend removing the spider safely though, rather than killing it, as these spiders are good guys.
