Is There A Link Between Kidney Stones And Energy Drinks
Kidney stones are usually formed following a build-up of certain chemicals in the body, such as calcium, oxalate, uric acid and cysteine, according to the NHS. Most are calcium stones, usually in the form of calcium oxalate. Energy drinks and other caffeinated beverages like coffee, tea and soda contain oxalate, hence the belief that they can cause the problem.
Spire consultant urologist Subu Subramonian confirmed that the case pictured did appear to be kidney stones. However, he said such a severe case is unlikely to be caused entirely by excessive consumption of energy drinks.
The appearance suggests that the patient may have a congenital condition such as renal tubular acidosis which predispose them to multiple calcification in the meat and tubes of the kidney due to a fault in the filtration mechanism for calcium in the micro tubes of the kidney. He explained that kidney stones often have no definite, single cause, and that several factors increase risk. Other contributing factors in play here could be inadequate water intake and high consumption of animal protein and salt, he said.

WEDNESDAY, May 15 — Drinking large amounts of sugary sodas and fruit drinks might raise your odds for painful kidney stones, a new study finds.
Although drinking extra fluids usually helps prevent stones from forming, researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston warn that beverages may come with varying risks or benefits. Coffee, tea and orange juice, for example, are associated with a lower risk of kidney stone formation.
On the other hand, “we found that higher consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks was associated with a higher incidence of kidney stones,” study senior author Dr. Gary Curhan, a physician in the Channing Division of Network Medicine, said in a hospital news release.
The study involved more than 194,000 people tracked for more than eight years. The participants were questioned about their medical history, lifestyle and medications. Information on their diet also was collected every four years.
The researchers found that those who drank one or more servings of sugar-sweetened soda daily had a 23 percent higher risk for kidney stones than those who drank less than one serving per week. The study showed that this also was true for those who drank sugary beverages other than soda, such as fruit punch.
Two experts said there are already many health reasons to avoid sugary drinks.

Colas And Chronic Kidney Disease
Soda consumption is also linked to chronic kidney disease, a condition where the kidney gradually loses function and which may eventually lead to renal failure. One study uncovered that you could also increase your risk of chronic kidney disease by downing as little as two or more colas every day. Test subjects who had this amount of cola doubled their risk of kidney disease. And while this was true of both artificially sweetened and regular cola, researchers in this study concluded that other non-cola sodas did not present this increased risk.

Calcium Oxalate Stones. These are the most common types of kidney stone. They can form when your urine is too acidic. The nutritional supplements potassium citrate, magnesium potassium citrate, and calcium citrate may also help. If the level of calcium in your urine is high, restricting sodium to no more than 2 grams a day is important to prevent calcium oxalate stones.
