Is Yerba Mate Tea Good Or Bad For Kidneys

Kidney Repair | Top 5 Herbal Teas Home Remedies You Should Drink Every Day

Yerba mate is an herbal tea native to South America with a smooth, woody flavor. Its high in antioxidants and nutrients. We bring it up here because it has a caffeine content comparable to coffee, making it a popular coffee alternative for waking you up in the morning.

Despite yerba mates benefits, there is little research on its relationship to kidney health. It does contain oxalic acid, an oxalate, so it should be avoided in excess when experiencing kidney conditions .;

I have come across information that yerba mate may have properties which can help dissolve kidney stones. However, I have yet to verify this information with any reliable sources . At this time, Id recommend speaking to your physician and moderating your consumption of yerba mate if kidney health is a concern for you.

What we do know is that the antioxidants in yerba mate really make an impact in how the body responds to the high caffeine – in a good way. A much healthier way to get your high caffeine kick. To learn more about yerba mate and its benefits, check out our spotlight post!

How To Restore Kidney Function Through Diet If You Have Kidney Disease

If youre looking for a holistic approach to completely normalize kidney function, many people have had success with the strategy, described in this comprehensive e-book. It involves very specific dietary and lifestyle tweaks, that enable your body to re-vitalize non-functioning nephrons in the kidneys, normalizing their function. This approach is also very helpful for people who arent necessarily diagnosed with kidney disease, as a prophylactic measure, as kidney function falls continuously as you age, even if you are still in the normal range of creatinine and GFR, due to the reduced number of well-functioning nephron tubes. If you decide to use this approach and are on medication, monitor your kidney function regularly many people keep taking strong diuretics or other medication because they dont realize their kidney function has become normal. As a result, the kidneys now start working too well, leading to a higher than necessary excretion of magnesium, sodium and other minerals. This can manifest as leg cramps, constant thirst or other similar and minor symptoms, that will disappear once you either stop taking diuretics, or start supplementing with magnesium and eating potassium-rich foods.

Normalizing Kidney Function With A Simple & Natural Dietary Strategy

This post is for you, if you are experiencing kidney problems. The prevalence of diagnosed kidney disease is very high up to 20% in some populations. The incidence of undiagnosed reduced kidney function is much higher. The kidney is very similar to the liver you can lose up to 90% of kidney function without noticing any worrisome symptoms, at which point it can be very hard to reverse the disease, although it can still be done, as you will learn. Herbal remedies tend to work well for improving kidney function and many different plants can boost glomerular filtration rate. They can do this by being a simple diuretic, so that more blood is forced through the kidneys, or they can act on gene expression, enabling your body to repair the nephrons on its own. Diuretics do help the kidneys filter toxins from the blood, and one study even shows regular alcohol use reduces the risk of kidney disease. Although alcohol is a toxin, it is also a diuretic.

In this post, you will discover some herbs that will help improve kidney function, mainly by increasing the amount of urine the kidneys produce.

Here are a few herbs that are helpful in improving kidney function:

For people with chronic kidney disease or end stage renal disease , dietitians are frequently asked if tea is allowed, especially hot tea during cold winter months. As with many foods and drinks we are asked about, the answer is yes! In moderation, tea is a great beverage option that can be healthfully included in a kidney diet. In fact, there are many exciting health benefits that tea offers to anyone.

Teas come from the plant Camellia sinensis, of which the leaves will either turn to black tea with exposure to air or to green tea by steam or heat. Many herbal teas are created from either black or green tea leaves with additions of other herb leaves, spices, flavor extracts, or sweeteners. Some examples are mint, chamomile, or orange blossom herbal teas. You can also find herbal teas that do not contain tea leaves. Read the label to determine when selecting herbal tea. Research on herbal teas is inconsistent, but generally speaking herbal teas from major tea brands are safe for kidney patients to drink.

Tea ranks very high on the oxygen radical absorbency capacity scale, a measure of the antioxidant content of plant-based foods. High ORAC foods and beverages, such as tea, help to fight off free radicals and cancerous cells in the body.

Green Tea And Kidneys

Good news for green tea lovers! Green tea was found to help prevent the progression of kidney disease, due to the polyphenols and you probably already know it’s not nearly as high in caffeine as black tea or coffee .

Green teas also contain lower levels of oxalates than some other beverages, and higher levels of EGCG, which means green tea may help prevent kidney stone formation .

Furthermore, green tea does not contain creatinine – a waste product produced by the body that healthy kidneys filter from the blood. Unhealthy kidneys may not filter this chemical efficiently, causing creatinine levels in the blood to increase . But with green tea, theres no need to worry about that.

Diet And Risk For Developing Kidney Disease

I was diagnosed with minimal changes disease, and I am very interested in research that shows lifestyle patterns that affect kidney disease. I was diagnosed 18 years ago and have spent the past two decades successfully experimenting with food and how protein affects my kidney disease. By replacing animal protein with plant-based protein, I was able to put my CKD into remission.

In this issue of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Rebholz et al. research the effect of sugar-sweetened beverages on kidney disease risk. Important studies, such as this one, motivate me to restrict my consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks and help educate other patients with kidney disease on the affect that sugar-sweetened beverages have on kidneys.

It is common practice in restaurants to allow employees to drink sodas for free. During the hot summer months, I was drinking more sodas per shift. This increase in sugar-sweetened beverages made me less tolerant of the heat in the kitchen. I appreciate my physical response, because it motivated me to change my beverage consumption from sodas to fruit-infused flavored water. Chances are I could have decreased my kidney function even more if I had not made this lifestyle change. I look back on that situation and realize that my experience does support these research findings: a higher intake of soda could be associated with greater odds of decreasing kidney function.

Does Green Tea Cause Kidney Stones

Before heading on to kidney stones, you need to know that the kidneys perform a really important role in filtering your blood and removing waste in the form of urine.

However, you can suffer from many kidney-related issues and one of them is kidney stones.

Kidney stones are basically deposits of salts and minerals that get formed inside the kidneys.

Most often the kidney stones are made up of calcium oxalate. The stones vary in size.

A smaller one can travel down the urinary tract and out of the body. But a larger one gets stuck thereby causing pain.

There have been concerns over the consumption of green tea and the chances of developing kidney stones. However, the truth is that green tea does not cause kidney stones.

It instead prevents their formation.

By drinking just one cup daily, you can see an 8% decrease in the risk of developing kidney stones in females and a 14% decrease in males.

Green tea prevents the formation of kidney stones by not letting calcium oxalate to clump together. The crystals are flatter and tend to break easily.

Therefore, they can easily leave the body through the urinary tract without causing any trouble.;In a nutshell, green tea affects the way the crystals get formed making them easy to exit the body.

P.S. The research is still being carried out and in case you have kidney issues, it is better to consult a doctor and then think about including the tea in your diet.

Brewing A New Treatment For Kidney Disease

Swirled in a cup, tea leaves are said to offer a glimpse into the future. Now, Yale researchers have shown that one kind of Chinese tea may change the future for patients with polycystic kidney disease , an inherited genetic disorder in which the formation of multiple renal cysts leads to kidney failure. The disease is the most common life-threatening genetic disorder worldwide, affecting some 12 million people. There is no cure, and the only effective treatments for PKD-induced renal failure are dialysis and kidney transplants.

A team led by biochemist Craig M. Crews, Ph.D., recently showed that triptolide, a compound found in the thunder god vine, a medicinal plant used to make the traditional Chinese tea known as lei gong teng, activates a cascade of molecular events that stops kidney cysts from forming.

Triptolide has been looked at, and is still being looked at, as an anti-tumor agent, explains Crews, associate professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology, chemistry and pharmacology. Yet they dont know how it works. Our thinking all along is that wed love to know how it works so that we can anticipate potential side effects as well as come up with different compounds that work in the same way.

Triptolide is now in early clinical trials as a cancer treatment, and the researchers hope their PKD findings will help accelerate clinical tests of triptolide in kidney disease.

Nutrients To Be Aware Of

Keep in mind that there are plenty of other healthy options that will do your kidneys, and your body, plenty of good. If you do have chronic kidney disease, there are a few nutrients you should be aware of.

Your kidneys regulate potassium, which is why it’s so important to monitor how much you are eating on a regular basis. Your kidneys also have a role in red blood cell production, meaning that if they aren’t functioning correctly your count may be low. Eating iron-rich foods can help prevent this and help keep your energy levels up.

On the opposite side of the equation, salt can be your enemy. Too much salt can raise your blood pressure and make your heart and kidneys work too hard. Be careful about how much salt you use in cooking and also watch the salt content of pre-packaged foods like canned soups, frozen dinners, and boxed meals. Salt substitutes may also contain a lot of potassium, so try herbs to add flavor and give it some time. You can get used to eating less salt, but it does take six to eight weeks for your taste buds to get used to it.

Lastly, we mentioned phosphorus, but it is worth repeating. A low-phosphorus diet should include lots of fresh fruits and veggies, rice milk, corn and rice cereals, as well as lemonade and even ginger ale.
