What Supplements Are Good For Kidney Function

Foods With High Sodium

Supplement Improves Kidney Disease and Function | Supplement For Kidney Function | Do You Need It?

Sodium is a mineral that controls fluid balance and maintains proper blood pressure and volume. The main source of sodium in your diet is from table salt. While sodium is an essential mineral, consuming too much of it can lead to an excess of fluids to accumulate in your body, which is also known as edema. Its important to monitor your food labels when trying to decrease your sodium intake. Food products with more than 400 mg of sodium are considered to be high in sodium.

Instead of eating canned veggies, opt for fresh. Even though vegetables are a healthy option, the excess sodium found in canned vegetables is not. If you are going the canned route, make sure to drain and rinse the vegetables to remove unnecessary sodium.

How Is Anemia Treated In Ckd

If iron supplements dont sufficiently increase your hemoglobin levels, your doctor will prescribe injectable hormones to stimulate red blood cell production. That includes drugs such as darbepoetin and epoetin.

These therapies are generally not started until the hemoglobin falls below 10 grams per deciliter . Most people with CKD are given these injections under their skin. If youre receiving hemodialysis, these drugs are administered during dialysis treatment.

Iron supplementation is continued during treatment with these hormones.

The Scoop On Vitamins And Minerals

Humans need vitamins and minerals because our bodies cannot produce them on their own. Vitamins and minerals are substances that aid body function by using the foods you eat. They give you energy, help the body grow and repair tissue, and more.

Nearly all vitamins and minerals come from food. For people with healthy kidneys, its much easier to consume nutrients from a balanced diet. But if you have kidney disease or are on dialysis, you may have limits on the types of foods you can eat. In this case, you may not be getting all the vitamins and minerals you need each day.

    Vitamin B Pantothenic Acid

    Function

Pantothenic acid, also known as vitamin B, assists in the process of creating and breaking down fatty acids. Making these fatty acids is essential for humans and helps us create our own cholesterol, store energy, and more.

    Forms of Pantothenic Acid

About 85% of pantothenic acid in food is in the form of CoA or phosphopantetheine. Your body then breaks it down and shifts around the molecules to create a usable form for itself to help carry out necessary bodily functions.

The good bacteria in your gut, known as the microbiome, also create pantothenic acid but not in significant amounts.

Some dietary supplements contain pantethine, which is a byproduct of pantothenic acid and is commonly marketed as a way to lower cholesterol.

    Recommended Intake and Deficiency

The adequate intake for pantothenic acid for adult men and women 14 years and older is 5mg per day. Since pantothenic acid is found in such a wide range of foods, deficiency is uncommon, especially in the US.

Deficiency is mostly reserved to those who are experiencing overall severe malnutrition and is accompanied by other vitamin and mineral deficiencies. A deficiency presents itself with numbness and burning in extremities, headache, fatigue, and irritability.

    Tolerable Upper Level Intake

    Why Is This A Concern

Considering creatines popularity as a sports supplement, it isnt surprising that concerns have been raised about potential adverse effects especially on the kidneys.

    Why the kidneys?

To store the creatine you ingest, and the creatine your liver produces, your skeletal muscles, your brain, and other tissues transform it into phosphocreatine. And when they use their stores to recycle adenosine triphosphate , often called lifes energy currency, one of the byproducts is creatinine.

Your kidneys excrete this creatinine unchanged. If their function declines, so does creatinine clearance. Creatinine clearance can be estimated from a blood test or measured through a combination of blood test and 24-hour urine sample.

Creatinine blood levels are the most commonly used indicator of kidney function: it is assumed that if your levels are high, your kidneys havent done their job.

Your skeletal muscles make for > 90% of your creatine stores, so the more muscle you have, and the more you use it, the more creatinine you produce. Also, greater animal protein intake has been associated with greater muscle mass and higher creatinine excretion. And yes, supplemental creatine can increase your blood levels of creatinine beyond the normal ranges but can we really conclude your kidneys are being damaged?

Concerns have been raised over creatine supplementation because it can increase creatinine levels beyond the normal range a marker of kidney damage.

    Vitamin C And Kidney Cells

While keeping blood pressure in check is important for kidney health, so is maintaining the health of the cells that make up your kidneys. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that is essential for the formation of collagen, which is a protein necessary for making cell membranes. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant that protects cells, including those in your kidneys, from free radicals. Fill your diet with strawberries, melon, broccoli, kiwifruit and cabbage to get more vitamin C for kidney health. A word of caution though: High intakes of vitamin C in supplement form may lead to the formation of kidney stones.

    Mechanism Of Vitamin D Toxicity

Although vitamin D toxicity is rare owing to a large therapeutic range, its widespread availability in various over-the-counter formulations may pose a substantial risk to uninformed patients. After consumption, vitamin D is carried to the liver where it undergoes hydroxylation and is activated by either microsomal CYP2R1 or mitochondrial CYP27A1 to 25-hydroxyvitamin D3., The resulting 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 binds to the vitamin D binding protein and is carried to the kidneys for further 1-hydroxylation by CYP27B1 to produce 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3. This 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3 is transported to target cells and enters the nucleus of the vitamin D receptor, leading to an upregulation in gene expression. Although it is transported by vitamin D binding protein, 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3 has a lower affinity to binding relative to 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 and its metabolites. A leading hypothesis suggests that an oversaturation of the vitamin D binding protein causes an increase in free active Vitamin D , resulting in hypercalcemia.

Best Supplements To Boost Kidney Function

The kidneys are one of the most important organs in our body as they help in clearing toxins, wastes and also help regulate blood pressure. Kidneys may be damaged by injury, hypertension or diabetes resulting in serious conditions and hence its always important to keep your kidney health at its best.

Diagnosing Chronic Kidney Disease & Dysfunction

Creatinine Supplements & Kidney Disease. Are They Safe For CKD Sufferers? Improve Kidney Function

Since you can suffer from progressive CKD long before it causes clinical problems, its important for those at risk to monitor the status of their kidney health. There are several ways to do this.

Blood tests can check how well your kidneys are filtering your blood. The most common metric for kidney function tests is the glomerular filtration rate . GFR can be calculated using serum creatinine and is inversely related, meaning the higher the creatinine the lower the GFR.

A comprehensive metabolic panel, or CMP blood test, often includes a kidney function test, namely, testing for GFR. While you can go through a health care provider to get this standard blood testing done, you can also order at home kidney function tests, which include the CMP. Check out our article on ordering your own lab tests.

Another for kidney disease severity used in kidney function tests is urine albumin, which has nothing to do with the headmaster in Harry Potter. Albumin is found in the blood, is important for fluid homeostasis, and transports hormones, vitamins, and enzymes throughout the body. When there is albumin in the urine, it suggests there may have been damage to the kidneys filtering system.

Imaging may be helpful to further evaluate kidney function if needed, including kidney structure and assessing blood flow. In some cases, a kidney biopsy may be necessary to further diagnose the cause of kidney dysfunction.
