The question that I get asked frequently by my kidney patients is are oats/oatmeal good or bad for kidney disease?
I will answer this question by breaking down different aspects of oats in kidney disease because when it comes to kidney diseases no one size fits all.
Every patients condition differs from one other. Therefore, dietary recommendations cannot be generalized.
Oats are a kind of grain that is eaten as a popular breakfast meal.
Back in the days, oats were mostly eaten in European countries but in recent years, due to increasing awareness of eating healthy, oats have found their way into the diets of Indian households as well.
Easy To Add To Your Diet
Both fresh and dried apricots make for a quick, delicious snack or an easy addition to your favorite meal. You can add them to your diet in a variety of ways, including:
- stirred into trail mix or granola
- eaten fresh as a snack
- sliced and added to yogurt or salad
- used in jams, preserves, and salsas
- stewed in a slow-cooker with meat, such as chicken or beef
- added to desserts like pies, cakes, and pastries
As theyre sweet and tart, apricots can be used as a replacement for peaches or plums in most recipes.

What Can I Do To Help Prevent The Development Of A Kidney Stone
- Drink enough water to allow for pale yellow urine
- Increase your intake of fruits and veggies. This will increase the pH of your urine, making stones less likely to form
- Include good sources of dietary calcium everyday
- If youve had a uric acid kidney stone, you may need to limit your intake of alcohol, red meat, or shellfish
- Drinking one cup of coffee per day seems to result in slightly lower incidence of stones
- Choose legumes as a protein alternative in place of meat a couple times per week. Very high intake of animal protein can increase ones risk of stones
- Avoid the use of vitamin C supplements as excess vitamin C can convert to oxalate

What Are The Ways To Make A Kidney
If you have diabetes along with kidney disease, you need to control your blood sugar to prevent more damage to your kidneys. A diabetic diet and a kidney-friendly diet share a lot of the same food items, but there are some important differences. There are some ways your kidney-friendly diet and diabetic diet can work together. Below are a few food items that are good for you, if youre diagnosed with both diabetes and kidney disease.
- Fruits: Berries, papaya, cherries, apples and plums
- Vegetables: Cauliflower, onions and spinach
- Proteins: Lean meats , eggs and unsalted seafood
- Carbohydrates: Whole-wheat breads, sandwich buns, unsalted crackers and pasta
- Fluids: Water, clear soups and unsweetened tea
- If you drink orange juice to treat low blood sugar, switch to kidney-friendly apple juice. It will provide the same blood sugar boost with a lot less potassium.
Your doctor and/or dietician will help you to create a meal plan that helps you control your blood sugar level while limiting sodium, phosphorus, potassium and fluids in the body.

It is also a source of phosphorus and potassium. Due to concerns around these nutrients, some consider milk bad for kidneys as it makes it harder to control potassium or even phosphorus.
Its important to know that everyone has different dietary needs. This is especially important for people with chronic kidney disease.

What Is The Diet For Kidney Stones
Food oxalate and calcium are more likely to bind together in the stomach and intestines before entering the kidneys. This reduces the likelihood of kidney stones forming. Foods high in protein can also help remove some types of waste from the body by means of urine. However, too much protein can lead to the formation of stones due to the increased amount of acid in the body. Therefore, it is important that you eat enough protein but not so much that it causes problems for your health.
It is also important to avoid products that contain large amounts of sodium or phosphorous because these substances play a role in stone formation.
A low-calcium and high-phosphorus diet can also increase your risk of developing stones. It is recommended that adults consume at least 500 milligrams of calcium per day and less than 800 milligrams of phosphorus daily. The National Institutes of Health recommend that those with kidney disease take 1000 milligrams of calcium daily.
Your doctor may suggest other methods for preventing kidney stones. For example, he or she may advise you to limit your consumption of alcohol, caffeine, and tannins .
Is Milk Bad For Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are painful and something no one wants to experience. Soy milk is bad for kidney stones due to the oxalate content of 20mg per cup.
There is no known value for the oxalate content of almond milk. However, since almonds are very high in oxalates, its wise to choose an alternative plant-based milk.
Better milk options for kidney stone prevention include oat milk, rice milk, or coconut milk.
Milk may be beneficial for kidney stones, depending on the type of kidney stones and the type of milk.
For calcium oxalate stones a diet with adequate calcium is very important in kidney stone prevention.
However, there are many different ways we can get calcium in our diet that does not require milk.
Getting enough calcium from either dairy or non-dairy sources is still shown to be helpful in the prevention of kidney stones.
Another reason milk may actually be helpful for kidney stone prevention is that it will be counted as part of your fluid needs. Its important for those that currently have, are at risk, or have a history of kidney stones to get plenty of fluids throughout the day.
Dairy And Our Kidneys
When it comes to dairy products in our everyday food intake, most people would say that they have milk or other dairy products daily, if not more! Milk, cheese, cottage cheese, yogurts, pudding and ice cream are some of the favorite dairy products of young and old alike. Dairy products are naturally abundant in protein, B vitamins, calcium, phosphorus and potassium. All of these nutrients are important for our bodys many functions.
Healthy kidneys help remove waste products and extra fluid from the blood and help balance the levels of salt and minerals in the body. As kidney function declines, protein waste products, fluid, salt and minerals can rise to unsafe levels in the body and this may mean that dairy products must be limited.

Bitter almonds contain toxic levels of hydrocyanic acid , which is a poisonous compound. Though bitter almonds help cure spasms, itch, and pain, overconsumption of these could lead to serious conditions. Some of them include nervous breakdown, choking, and death. How Is It Treated
Much of your treatment will depend on the cause of the atrophy. Treating the underlying condition may help prevent further damage to your kidney.
Even with an atrophic kidney, your kidneys may still be functioning well enough to get the job done. But if your kidneys are functioning at less than 10 to 15 percent, youre in kidney failure. That means you need treatment to do the work of the kidneys.
One way to do this is through dialysis.
In hemodialysis, your blood is run through an artificial kidney apparatus called a hemodialyzer that removes waste products. In peritoneal dialysis, a fluid called dialysate is used to fill your abdomen to filter waste in your body through a peritoneal dialysis catheter.
Dialysis helps do the work your kidneys can no longer do. But its not a cure. Youll need to have dialysis several times a week for the rest of your life or until you get a kidney transplant.
You can receive a healthy kidney from a living or a deceased donor. The wait for a suitable kidney can take years, though. After a transplant, youll need to take antirejection medications for the life of the kidney.

However, foods that have been fortified with phosphorus might get absorbed completely because they do not come from a natural source and are not bound with phytates.
