Aloe Vera May Help Stabilize Blood Sugar

More than 30 million people in the United States have diabetes and over 84 million American adults have prediabetes, according to data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

Weight loss, a healthy diet, and physical activity help to lower the risk of diabetes and improve blood sugar. But there’s also evidence suggesting the potential benefit of aloe vera on glycemic control, as reported in a systematic review of eight randomized controlled trials published in March 2016 in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics.

Aloe vera improved glycemic control in people with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes when used as a supplement administered orally as crushed leaves, juice, a powder, or an extract. It lowered fasting plasma glucose in those with prediabetes, and it significantly improved A1C in the individuals managing type 2 diabetes.

Researchers postulated the association was due to aloe veras ability to reduce glucose absorption in the gastrointestinal tract and lower glucose production and they encourage further high-quality studies to quantify the effects of aloe vera on glycemic control.

Is Aloe Vera Juice Safe To Drink While Breastfeeding

Given the prior information, the question of whether aloe is passed from a mothers milk to an infant is also difficult to answer. There is no data on the subject. Likewise, there is no data on the subject of whether aloe drinks are safe for newborns to consume.

Unlike during pregnancy, the risks of aloe vera crossing from the mothers milk to the child are substantially lower, however. In order for any aloe compounds to make it to the mothers milk, they would have to make it through the mothers metabolism without being extremely degraded.

We know that aloe compounds resist degradation in the first-pass metabolism and stomach at least partially because of their impact on the intestines. In the intestines, aloe compounds cause a massive increase in gut motility and also a decrease in the amount of water that the intestines absorb.

These compounds could thus potentially make their way to the infant via the mothers milk in small quantities. Once again, nothing is known about the topic specifically. Therefore, it is suggested not to consume aloe vera products while breastfeeding.

Iii Effects Of Fermentable High Fiber Diet Supplementation In Patients On End

The gut microbial changes caused by CKD are thought to perpetuate systemic inflammation. Therefore, strategies aimed at modulating the gut microbiota may be helpful in reducing complications associated with CKD. Pavan investigated 24 patients with stable CKD stage III to V. Patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups: low protein diet + prebiotic + probiotic supplementation , receiving 3 tablets of PPS daily for 6 months, and the control group receiving low protein diet only . The declining eGFR during PPS were significantly lower than those with low protein diet only.

Recent studies have focused on dietary approaches to favorably alter the composition of the gut microbial communities as a treatment method in CKD. Resistant starch , a prebiotic that promotes proliferation of gut bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, increases the production of metabolites including SCFAs, which confer a number of health-promoting benefits. Snelson et al exhibited emerging evidence that microbiota-derived metabolites can regulate the incretin axis and mitigate inflammation via expansion of regulatory T cells. Studies from animals and patients with CKD showed that RS supplementation attenuates the concentrations of uremic retention solutes, including IS and PCS. The author explored the efficacy of RS in animal models of CKD and in humans with the condition, and discussed how RS supplementation could be a promising dietary approach for slowing CKD progression.

Aloe Vera Juice: Benefits and Uses

In patients with chronic kidney disease , many metabolites of gut microbiota retain in the body as uremic toxins. In CKD, the accumulation of gut microbiota-derived uremic toxins, such as indoxyl-sulfate , p-cresol sulfate and trimethylamine N-oxide, accelerates the progression of CKD. Reduction of the accumulation of uremic toxins through modification gut microbiota is important for the protection against renal damage. The key mechanism protecting against acuteãkidney injury was suggested to be reduction in inflammation mediated by an epigenetic mechanism.

Jiang et al evaluated differences in the compositions of fecal microbiota between 52 ESRD- patients and 60 healthy controls in southern China using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and high-throughput sequencing methods. Aloe Vera: Cancer Fighter

A number of studies have examined aloe veras role in preventing or treating cancer. Major health organizations, like the NIH, stop short of saying the plant is effective mainly due to lack of evidence. Another important note: The research evaluating aloes role in cancer treatment has been done on animals, not humans.

The theories surrounding aloe as a cancer panacea relate to the plants ability to strengthen the immune system which allows the body to fight off cancer cells.

Heres some research to strengthen the argument that aloe may one day be a popular cancer treatment.

  • In conjunction with chemotherapy, an aloe and honey mixture may help more lung cancer patients heal completely, partially or control the disease better than those using only chemotherapy.
  • The anthraquinone called emodin has been shown to prevent liver cancer cells from growing in test tubes.
  • A study published in 2013 found that aloe-emodin may help treat or prevent breast cancer.
  • The effectiveness of the immune-boosting substance Acemannan has been tested in mice. One study found Acemannan revved up the immune cells to make cytokines, molecules that send cells to fight off inflammation or infection.

Its advisable to talk with your doctor before using aloe vera as a cancer treatment.

Aloe Vera Protects The Kidney Tissue

Benefit confidence: High

In a 2004 animal study published in the Periodical NISCAIR-CSIR, India, when type 2 induced diabetic rats were administered glibenclamide and aloe vera pulp extracts in a regulated concentration, the degeneration of kidney tissue reduced drastically because of the decrease in reduced glutathione derivative, superoxide dismutase and other free radicals.

In another animal study conducted in India on induced diabetic rats, the hydroperoxide and reduced glutathione levels significantly decreased in the kidney preventing damage to its tissue.

The kidneys of the mice administered with aloe gel supplements were healthier than that of the diabetic mice used as control.

According to an animal study published in the Internal Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, aloe vera reduced the amount of reduced glutathione derivative, reduced the action of free radicals acting as an antioxidant in the kidney and also protected the kidney tissue from the effects of gamma irradiation to a certain extent.

What does it mean? Aloe vera has an inherent antioxidant property which aids it in preventing damage to the kidney tissue caused by free radicals.

Aloe Vera Juice for Leaky Gut Syndrome ~ Healing Your ...

Aloe vera could be an unexpectedly useful addition to your oral health regime, thanks to its possible anti-plaque and anti-gingivitis properties.

A past triple-blind randomized trial allocated 345 subjects into three groups of 115, before asking them to rinse their mouth twice daily with a specified mouthwash for 30 days: One group received an aloe-based mouthwash, one received a mouthwash containing popular germicide chlorhexidine gluconate, and one received a placebo mouthwash of distilled water.

After 30 days, the aloe verabased mouthwash was as effective in reducing gingival bleeding and plaque as the chlorhexidine mouthwash when compared with the placebo group.

Another previous study found similar results when comparing an aloe verabased mouthwash with a chlorhexidine mouthwash and a saline-water placebo, though this study took place over a shorter period of time .

These results suggest that an aloe verabased mouthwash could be a suitable alternative to traditional mouthwashes.

Research Indicates Aloe Vera Helps Promote Kidney And Urinary Tract Health

How Does Aloe Vera Affect The Body?

Aloecorp | Sep 19, 2007

Khon Kaen, THAILAND Researchers at Khon Kaen University have provided additional confirmation for the strong potential of Aloe vera gel in preventing renal stone formation. Based on past use of citrate-rich herbal products in promoting kidney health, two intriguing studies set out to evaluate citrate concentrations in fresh aloe and then observe changes in urinary concentrations among study subjects after consuming aloe gel.

Both subject groups benefited, with the subjects in the childrens study showing a significant increase in citrate concentration and the adult group showing a significant decrease in oxalate excretion. An additional benefit discovered during the studies was on overall increase in urinary volume, also helpful in promoting urinary tract health through decreasing salt crystallization.

The use of Aloe as a soothing topical is ubiquitous in the US, said Ken Jones, Chief Science Officer of Aloecorp®, the worlds leading vertically integrated

So What Exactly Is Aloe Vera

‘A perennial succulent of the lily family, aloe vera is a thick, short-stemmed shrub with triangular, fleshy leaves composed of three layers one of which contains the slimy, water-filled gel that we typically associate with aloe vera products such as after sun,’ explains Dr Ward.

‘Its also the main part of the plant that ends up typically in all skincare products. This gel is mostly made up of water which is why, once it evaporates on the skin, you feel a cooling effect,’ she adds.

‘The remaining 1% contains a huge amount of nutrients that are amazing for the skin. These include vitamins A, C and E , vitamin B12, folic acid, enzymes, fatty acids and minerals such as calcium, magnesium and zinc.’

‘It’s commonly known to treat sunburns topically’, says nutritionist Mays Al-Ali. ‘But drinking this healthy elixir in juice, smoothie or shake form provides you with a number of other health benefits.’

Aloe Veras Topical Uses

Aloe vera may be most well-known for its moisturizing properties. It can be found in plenty of skin and hair products, but it can also be used straight from the plant.

Aloes reputation for healing wounds starts as far back as 1935 when it was documented that the whole-leaf extract promoted complete regeneration of the skin. Research suggests that polysaccharides in the gel have anti-itching and anti-inflammatory that help with wound healing.

The most remarkable experiences have been with topical uses, Morrow recalls. It encourages regeneration of tissue.

However, more research is needed another study demonstrated that aloe may delay surgical wound healing.

Anecdotal evidence suggests aloe can be used topically for the following purposes:

Hair conditioning

Mix equal parts water and aloe vera gel together. Next, add an essential oil of your choice. The aloe locks in moisture and blocks external toxins from damaging hair.

The moisture from the aloe also promotes a healthy scalp and the anti fungal elements in the gel are known to eliminate dandruff.

Skin Inflammation

The combination of vitamins and minerals in aloe can soothe skin that is red from inflammation and acne. Regularly applying aloe to the face can help reduce redness.

Psoriasis

Some studies have found aloe may help treat the skin disease. The NIH cites research that used a cream with 0.5 percent aloe and after four to eight weeks, skin plaques were reduced and the overall severity lessened.
