Ultimately, I dont recommend orange juice for kidney stones.
The effect of drinking a reasonable amount of orange juice appears to have a neutral effect on kidney stones. One study did find a 12% reduced risk of kidney stones in people who drink orange juice. However, other studies have found increased risk of kidney stones with fruit juice.
Although orange juice does have some benefits, the amount of orange juice you need to drink to get these benefits adds a TON of sugar. We know that sugar, especially from beverages, can actually cause kidney stones.
You can get alkali and citrate in your diet in much healthier ways than orange juice. All fruits and vegetables will add citrate and alkali. Id much prefer my patients get these kidney stone benefits from plenty of fruits and vegetables, rather than orange juice.
If you enjoy orange juice, it can absolutely fit in a kidney stone friendly meal pattern. I usually recommend a 4 fluid ounce portion of any type of fruit juice. Ask your dietitian what makes the most sense for you!
Ways To Include Cranberries In Your Diet
100% pure cranberry juice is extremely tart, and many commercial brands blend it with other fruit juice, and add sugar to make it taste less bitter. Most of these blends have as little as 25% cranberry juice, so you may want to consider blending your own.

Stage 4 kidney disease means the condition is already in the second advanced stage of kidney disease. Due to the failed kidney function, electrolyte disturbance can be seen among some cases. So if stage 4 kidney disease patients are not suffering from high phosphorus, high potassium levels and edema, then they do not need to avoid cranberry juice. Dont forget about the fiber either. Oranges are a good source of fiber, which helps to stabilize your blood sugar. This is why youll often see a stronger blood sugar spike from orange juice than from whole oranges.
Some orange juice products contain very little fiber, as the pulp is strained out. Others include the pulp or even add extra, which increases their fiber content. But, even then, youll get more fiber from a whole orange than from a glass of orange juice.
Then theres the time factor to think about as well. Eating a whole orange isnt a fast process while drinking a glass of orange juice takes barely any time at all.

Just one medium-sized baked potato contains 610 mg of potassium, whereas one average-sized baked sweet potato contains 541 mg of potassium .
Fortunately, some high potassium foods, including potatoes and sweet potatoes, can be soaked or leached to reduce their potassium contents.
Cutting potatoes into small, thin pieces and boiling them for at least 10 minutes can reduce the potassium content by about 50% .
Potatoes that are soaked in water for at least 4 hours before cooking are proven to have an even lower potassium content than those not soaked before cooking .
This method is known as potassium leaching or the double-cook method.
Although double cooking potatoes lowers the potassium content, its important to remember that their potassium content isnt eliminated by this method.
Considerable amounts of potassium can still be present in double-cooked potatoes, so its best to practice portion control to keep potassium levels in check.
Potatoes and sweet potatoes are high potassium vegetables. Boiling or double cooking potatoes can decrease their potassium content by about 50%.
Tomatoes are another high potassium fruit that may not fit the guidelines of a renal diet.
They can be served raw or stewed and are often used to make sauces.
Just 1 cup of tomato sauce can contain upwards of 900 mg of potassium .
Unfortunately for those on a renal diet, tomatoes are commonly used in many dishes.
Kidney Stones And Orange Juice
- Stay hydrated drinking fluids helps dilute the substances that lead to kidney stones. 100% orange juice is ideal for hydration because it contains a high level of water content 88 percent to be exact.
- Get enough calcium calcium can bind to food oxalates when consumed together and may reduce the risk of developing one common type of kidney stone.1 Fortified orange juice is an excellent source of calcium and typically contains 350 mg of calcium,2 or about 30% of the recommended Daily Value3* in one 8-ounce glass.
- Avoid too much sodium excess sodium is associated with calcium loss, and calcium may bind to compounds in urine to form stones.
- Limit animal protein; consuming too much animal protein can lead to high levels of uric acid that may lead to stone formation. Animal proteins also contain phosphates, another factor that may raise the risk of kidney stones.1

Potassium And Chronic Kidney Disease
What is potassium and what does it do in the body?

In order for potassium to perform these functions, blood levels must be kept between 3.5 and 5.5 mEq/L. Thekidneys;help keep potassium at a normal level.
When is potassium too low or too high?
Potassium comes from the foods we eat. Healthy kidneys remove excess potassium in the urine to help maintain normal levels in the blood.
Because most foods have potassium, low potassium is uncommon in people who eat a healthy diet.
Some of the effects of low potassium include muscle weakness, cramping and fatigue.
When kidneys fail they can no longer remove excess potassium, so the level builds up in the body. High potassium in the blood is called hyperkalemia, which may occur in people with advancedstages of chronic kidney disease . Some of the effects of high potassium are nausea, weakness, numbness and slow pulse.
Orange Juice And Inflammation
Inflammation is another debatable area. Here too, the various compounds in orange juice can potentially help to decrease inflammation, which may then lower your risk of some diseases.
Youll even see oranges and orange juice included in some lists of anti-inflammatory foods. But, theres still the same problem here the sugar. Sugar is one of the worst culprits for inflammation.
Few studies have directly looked at whether orange juice increases or decreases inflammation, so we dont know how the pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory features balance out. But, even if orange juice does lower inflammation, there are plenty of better anti-inflammatory foods out there.
In fact, oranges themselves are a more powerful choice for decreasing inflammation and boosting your immune system. You get much more fiber when you choose to focus on the whole fruit.
Plus, it takes longer to eat a whole orange than to chug a glass of orange juice, so theres less risk that youll overdo it.
