Does Flagyl Treat Kidney Infection

What Other Drugs Will Affect Flagyl

Metronidazole ( Flagyl ): What is Metronidazole Used For, Dosage, Side Effects & Precautions?

Sometimes it is not safe to use certain medicines at the same time. Some drugs can affect your blood levels of other drugs you use, which may increase side effects or make the medicines less effective.

Tell your doctor about all your current medicines. Many drugs can affect metronidazole, especially:

  • an antidepressant

Other Antibiotics And Treatments For Urinary Tract Infections

Other antibiotics may be as effective as first-line antibiotics but have more side effects or risks of complications. They are not commonly used. They include:

  • Fluoroquinolones
  • Ciprofloxacin
  • Levofloxacin

Antibiotics called beta-lactams may be used when other first-line antibiotics are unavailable or cannot be used for any other reason. They include:

  • Amoxicillin-clavulanate
  • Cefdinir
  • Cefaclor

These are not usually first-line choices because they are broad-spectrum antibiotics that have a higher risk of causing antibiotic resistance.

Another drug that is frequently prescribed for a UTI is phenazopyridine, available under several brand names such as Pyridium. This medication is not an antibiotic and does not cure a UTI. It is used to relieve symptoms of pain, burning, urgency and pressure.

What Bacteria Causes Kidney Infections

The most common bacterium that causes urinary tract infections is Escherichia coli, which you might know better as simply E. coli. Responsible for about 90 percent of all uncomplicated urinary tract infections, E. coli can be found in the colons of humans and animals and in their fecal waste. Bacteria can develop in the urinary tract through the urethra and move into the kidneys, which may lead to kidney infections.

Cipro And Other Medications

Below is a list of medications that can interact with Cipro. This list does not contain all drugs that may interact with Cipro.

Before taking Cipro, be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist about all prescription, over-the-counter, and other drugs you take. Also tell them about any vitamins, herbs, and supplements you use. Sharing this information can help you avoid potential interactions.

If you have questions about drug interactions that may affect you, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Antacids

Many antacids contain calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, and aluminum hydroxide. These ingredients can bind to Cipro and prevent your body from absorbing it. This can decrease how well Cipro works.

To avoid this interaction, take Cipro at least two hours before taking an antacid, or six hours afterward.

Anticoagulant drugs

Taking Cipro with oral anticoagulant drugs such as warfarin might increase the anticoagulant effects. This might result in increased bleeding. If you take an anticoagulant, your doctor may need to monitor your bleeding risk more frequently if you take Cipro.

Drugs that prolong the QT interval

Certain medications prolong your QT interval, which means they might affect the rhythm of your heartbeat. Taking Cipro with these drugs can increase the risk of having a dangerous irregular heartbeat. Cipro should be avoided or used very carefully with these medications.

Examples of these medications include:

Clozapine

How Should I Use Metronidazole

Take metronidazole exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets.

Metronidazole oral is taken by mouth. The injection is given as an infusion into a vein. A healthcare provider will give you the injection if you are unable to take the medicine by mouth.

Shake the oral suspension . Measure a dose with the supplied measuring device .

Swallow the extended-release tablet whole and do not crush, chew, or break it.

If you are treating a vaginal infection, your sexual partner may also need to take metronidazole so you don’t become reinfected.

Metronidazole is usually given for up to 10 days in a row. You may need to repeat this dosage several weeks later.

Keep using this medicine even if your symptoms quickly improve. Skipping doses could make your infection resistant to medication. This medicine will not treat a viral infection .

Metronidazole will not treat a vaginal yeast infection. You may even develop a new vaginal yeast infection, which may need to be treated with antifungal medication. Tell your doctor if you have symptoms such as itching or discharge during or after treatment with this medicine.

Do not share this medicine with another person, even if they have the same symptoms you have.

This medicine can affect the results of certain medical tests. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using this medicine.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Can I Drink With Metronidazole

The interaction is very significant and has been known to occur with even really small amounts of alcohol. Its not yet determined why metronidazole and alcohol affect each other, and its impossible to be sure just how long the challenge might last after stopping metronidazole. It is because theres been hardly any research into this.Manufacturers of metronidazole advise that you should avoid drinking alcohol while taking the antibiotic and then for 48 hours after finishing the course.

Does Flagyl Cause Yeast Infections

Metronidazole Equaled Vancomycin for C. diff Diarrhea

Flagyl is an antibiotic prescribed for bacterial and parasitic infections. Its also used to treat stomach ulcers caused by H. pylori. Unfortunately, like most antibiotics, it produces side effects. The most common are upset stomach and diarrhea, but it can also cause a yeast infection.

While killing the bacteria that cause infections, Flagyl also kills friendly bacteria in your body, called probiotics. Probiotics benefit your health in many ways, one of the most important is boosting your immunity and balancing your intestinal and vaginal microflora.

Probiotics produce lactic acid, this acid helps keep your vaginal pH too acidic for yeast to start multiplying and cause an infection.

When there are not enough probiotics in your vagina, your vaginal pH changes and Candida can spread and cause unpleasant symptoms. For more information, check my article about how antibiotics cause yeast infections.

I found a study from 2005 that focused on what antibiotics are most likely to trigger a yeast infection in mice. They found that the antibiotics most likely to cause a yeast infection are Piperacillin-tazobactam, Ceftriaxone, Metronidazole , and Clindamycin.

Prevention And Treatment Of Kidney Infection

  • Antibiotics

  • Occasionally surgery

Antibiotics are started as soon as the doctor suspects pyelonephritis and samples have been taken for laboratory tests. The choice of drug or its dosage may be modified based on the laboratory test results , how sick the person is, and whether the infection started in the hospital, where bacteria tend to be more resistant to antibiotics. Other factors that can alter the choice or dosage of drug include whether the persons immune system is impaired and whether the person has a urinary tract abnormality , including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Blockage can be complete read more ).

Outpatient treatment with antibiotics given by mouth is usually successful if the person has:

  • No nausea or vomiting

  • No signs of dehydration

When To See A Doctor Or Healthcare Professional

If you are struggling with symptoms of itchiness, irritation, redness, burning, and cracks in the wall of your vagina, you should see a healthcare provider for a diagnosis and treatment plan.

If you develop a yeast infection while using an OTC antifungal vaginal cream or suppository in conjunction with your antibiotics, contact a healthcare provider.

They will be able to examine you and determine the best medication for you.

They may take a small sample of vaginal discharge to test under a microscope to form their diagnosis.

Are There Any Complications From A Kidney Infection

Most people who develop a kidney infection make a full recovery if treatment is given promptly. Possible complications which occur in a small number of cases include:

  • Sometimes germs from a kidney infection get into the bloodstream, particularly if treatment is delayed. This may cause blood poisoning . This can be serious or even life-threatening.
  • In pregnant women who develop pyelonephritis occasionally, it may result in the baby being born early or with a lower birth weight.
  • A kidney abscess can develop. This is a collection of pus that forms within the kidney.
  • The infection can sometimes cause some permanent damage to kidney tissues.

These complications are uncommon but may be more likely if:

Emphysematous pyelonephritis is also a rare complication. In this condition the kidney tissues are rapidly destroyed by the infection and the bacteria can release toxic gases which can build up in the kidneys. You become very unwell if you develop this complication. This complication seems mostly to affect people who have poorly controlled diabetes.

What Causes A Belly Button Yeast Infection

Pin on Dog stuff

A yeast called Candida causes belly button yeast infections, or candidiasis. Candida yeast grow and thrive in warm, damp environments. Conditions that allow Candida to grow and thrive include:

  • Wearing tight clothing.
  • Poor hygiene.
  • Skin conditions such as intertrigo and psoriasis.

Belly button yeast infections are more common in some groups of people. This includes people who:

  • Have overweight/obesity.
  • Are taking antibiotics. Antibiotics can kill the bacteria that normally live on your skin. This allows Candida to grow and thrive.
  • Are receiving cancer treatment like chemotherapy.

Belly button yeast infections are also more common in people with weakened immune systems. People with conditions such as HIV/AIDs or diabetes have a great chance of developing a yeast infection.

How Can I Prevent Kidney Infections

The following simple measures can help to prevent kidney infections:

  • Drink plenty of water to flush bacteria out of your urethra and bladder. Drink 1.5 to 2 litres a day and aim for pale yellow urine.
  • Dont delay peeing avoid holding on.
  • Make sure your bladder is as empty as possible every time you go.
  • Women should always wipe from the front to the back after going to the toilet.
  • Pee before and soon after sexual intercourse.

Does Cranberry Juice Prevent A Uti

Some patients may want to use cranberry or cranberry juice as a home remedy to treat a UTI. Cranberry juice has not been shown to cure an ongoing bacterial infection in the bladder or kidney.

Cranberry has been studied as a preventive maintenance agent for UTIs. Studies are mixed on whether cranberry can really prevent a UTI. Cranberry may work by preventing bacteria from sticking to the inside of the bladder however, it would take a large amount of cranberry juice to prevent bacterial adhesion. More recent research suggests cranberries may have no effect on preventing a UTI

  • According to one expert, the active ingredient in cranberries A-type proanthocyanidins are effective against UTI-causing bacteria, but is only in highly concentrated cranberry capsules, not in cranberry juice.
  • However, cranberry was not proven to prevent recurrent UTIs in several well-controlled studies, as seen in a 2012 meta-analysis of 24 trials published by the Cochrane group.
  • While studies are not conclusive, there is no harm in drinking cranberry juice. However, if you develop symptoms, see your doctor. Some people find large quantities of cranberry juice upsetting to the stomach.

Increasing fluid intake like water, avoiding use of spermicides, and urinating after intercourse may be helpful in preventing UTIs, although limited data is available.

How Do I Detox My Kidneys

There is no scientific evidence that kidney cleansing has any effect on kidney health. The best way to detoxify the kidneys is to not toxify them in the first place. Drink plenty of fluids, eat a nutritious diet, avoid processed foods, reduce salt intake, quit smoking, and avoid alcohol, caffeine, and unnecessary medications.

Dosage And How To Take Flagyl

Antiprotozoal Drugs – Metronidazole, Bactrim, Suramin, Pentamidine, Eflornithine, Fansidar

When taken at home to treat an infection, Flagyl is taken orally in tablet or syrup form. Dosage for adults typically ranges from 250 to 750 milligrams two to three times per day, often for five or more days. However, dosage will vary depending on the condition being treated.

In order for metronidazole to effectively kill harmful bacteria, it is important to maintain a consistent level of the drug in the blood. Therefore, it must be taken at regular intervals without missing any doses.

Take Flagyl with 8 ounces of water. Flagyl can be taken by itself, or it can be taken with meals. If dry mouth becomes a problem, try chewing gum. You can also suck on hard candy or ice chips.

Treatment Of Asymptomatic Sexual Partners

T. vaginalis infection is a venereal disease. Therefore, asymptomatic sexual partners of treated patients should be treated simultaneously if the organism has been found to be present, in order to prevent reinfection of the partner. The decision as to whether to treat an asymptomatic male partner who has a negative culture or one for whom no culture has been attempted is an individual one. In making this decision, it should be noted that there is evidence that a woman may become reinfected if her sexual partner is not treated. Also, since there can be considerable difficulty in isolating the organism from the asymptomatic male carrier, negative smears and cultures cannot be relied upon in this regard. In any event, the sexual partner should be treated with Flagyl in cases of reinfection.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Kidney Infection

Symptoms usually develop quickly, over a few hours or so, and may include:

  • Pain in a loin or flank. .
  • High temperature which may cause shivers.
  • Feeling sick and/or being sick .
  • Diarrhoea.
  • Blood in the urine.
  • There will also usually be symptoms of a bladder infection for example, pain on passing urine, and going to the toilet often.

Not all of the symptoms may develop, and sometimes a kidney infection can just cause vague symptoms. For example, just feeling generally unwell but not being able to say why.

In older people a kidney infection may cause confusion. This is why a urine test is often done when an elderly person suddenly becomes confused or appears generally unwell.

Carcinogenesis Mutagenesis Impairment Of Fertility

Tumors affecting the liver, lungs, mammary, and lymphatic tissues have been detected in several studies of metronidazole in rats and mice, but not hamsters.

Pulmonary tumors have been observed in all six reported studies in the mouse, including one study in which the animals were dosed on an intermittent schedule . Malignant liver tumors were increased in male mice treated at approximately 1500 mg/m2 . Malignant lymphomas and pulmonary neoplasms were also increased with lifetime feeding of the drug to mice. Mammary and hepatic tumors were increased among female rats administered oral metronidazole compared to concurrent controls. Two lifetime tumorigenicity studies in hamsters have been performed and reported to be negative.

Metronidazole has shown mutagenic activity in in vitro assay systems including the Ames test. Studies in mammals in vivo have failed to demonstrate a potential for genetic damage.

Metronidazole failed to produce any adverse effects on fertility or testicular function in male rats at doses up at 400 mg/kg/day for 28 days. However, rats treated at the same dose for 6 weeks or longer were infertile and showed severe degeneration of the seminiferous epithelium in the testes as well as marked decreases in testicular spermatid counts and epididymal sperm counts. Fertility was restored in most rats after an eight week, drug-free recovery period.

What Drug Interactions Occur With Cipro Vs Flagyl

Antibiotics containdicated in dogs & cats

Cipro drug interactions

Flagyl drug interactions

  • Alcohol should be avoided because metronidazole and alcohol together can cause severe nausea, vomiting, cramps, flushing, and headache.
  • Metronidazole can increase the blood thinning effects of warfarin and increase the risk of bleeding probably by reducing the breakdown of warfarin.
  • Cimetidine increases blood levels of metronidazole while cholestyramine reduces blood levels of metronidazole by reducing its absorption.
  • Metronidazole should not be combined with amprenavir for treating human immunodeficiency disease because amprenavir contains propylene glycol.
  • Metronidazole blocks the breakdown of propylene glycol in the liver leading to accumulation of propylene glycol in blood. Accumulation of propylene glycol could cause seizures, increased heart rate, and lead to kidney failure.
  • Metronidazole increases the blood levels of carbamazepine , lithium and cyclosporine though unknown mechanisms. Serious reactions may occur if these drugs are taken with metronidazole.
