Consuming a cocoa product could help patients with kidney failure to improve their blood vessel function, according to research published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
Individuals with failing kidneys have a higher risk of heart problems and are more likely to die from cardiovascular causes than from any other cause.
The heart and kidneys are major organs in the body if either organ stops functioning properly, the other will be affected.
If the heart ceases to pump efficiently, it becomes congested with blood, pressure builds up, and there will be congestion of blood in the kidneys and a reduction in oxygenated blood there.
Conversely, damage to the kidneys can cause the hormone system that regulates blood pressure to go into overdrive in order to increase blood supply to the kidneys. As the heart then pumps against higher pressure in the arteries, it can be damaged by the extra workload.
Lifestyle and dietary modifications to maintain vascular health or reduce the risk could help protect heart health for those with kidney disease, but few therapeutic approaches of this sort currently exist.

Candy Not Recommended On A Kidney Diet
Chocolate and nuts contain high amounts of phosphorus and potassium. Your dietitian can help you see which candy is acceptable and which is not. Here are examples of candy types that are not recommended for people with kidney disease or on dialysis.
- Chocolate candy bars
- Milk, dark or other types of candy bars containing chocolate or cocoa
- Chocolate and nut candy bars
- Candy bars that contain nuts
- Candy bars that contain peanut butter

If you choose to eat these candies, consider purchasing the smaller or bite size, and have only one piece occasionally.
Side Effects From Caffeine
According to the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, dark chocolate has higher caffeine content than both milk chocolate and white chocolate. Consuming large amounts of dark chocolate can lead to an increased heart rate, diarrhea, anxiety, irritability, nervousness, and dehydration. Caffeine can also cause an increase in blood pressure and difficulty in focus or concentration. Caffeine can cause insomnia so you should avoid eating dark chocolate before you go to sleep. If you are sensitive to caffeine or if you suffer from high blood pressure, you should avoid consuming large amounts of dark chocolate.

Potatoes And Sweet Potatoes
Potatoes and sweet potatoes are potassium-rich vegetables.
Just one medium-sized baked potato contains 610 mg of potassium, whereas one average-sized baked sweet potato contains 541 mg of potassium .
Fortunately, some high potassium foods, including potatoes and sweet potatoes, can be soaked or leached to reduce their potassium contents.
Cutting potatoes into small, thin pieces and boiling them for at least 10 minutes can reduce the potassium content by about 50% .
Potatoes that are soaked in water for at least 4 hours before cooking are proven to have an even lower potassium content than those not soaked before cooking .
This method is known as potassium leaching or the double-cook method.
Although double cooking potatoes lowers the potassium content, its important to remember that their potassium content isnt eliminated by this method.
Considerable amounts of potassium can still be present in double-cooked potatoes, so its best to practice portion control to keep potassium levels in check.
Potatoes and sweet potatoes are high potassium vegetables. Boiling or double cooking potatoes can decrease their potassium content by about 50%.
Tomatoes are another high potassium fruit that may not fit the guidelines of a renal diet.
They can be served raw or stewed and are often used to make sauces.

This one-bowl granola recipe could not be easier and quickly satisfies even the strongest chocolate craving!

- 1 ¾ oz dark chocolate
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- ½ cup ground flax seeds
- ½ cup pecans, toasted and chopped
- ¼ teaspoon sea salt
1) Preheat the oven to 325 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2) Using a microwave, melt the dark chocolate, coconut oil, and maple syrup in a heat-proof bowl . Stir the chocolate mixture every 30 seconds until fully melted. Be careful the bowl will be hot.
3) To the melted chocolate mixture, add in the oats, flax seeds, pecans, and sea salt. Stir thoroughly to combine.
4) Spread granola on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, tossing halfway through. It will continue to crisp up as it cools.
How to store: Once cooled, keep the granola in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge for up to 7 days or in the freezer for a few months.
You may have heard that nuts, beans, and whole grains are not a great choice for a kidney-friendly diet because they are high in phosphorus.

What Is So Good About Cocoa
Cocoa flavanols have been shown to have beneficial effects on blood vessel function in individuals with normal kidney function.
The flavanols found in cocoa and dark chocolate are part of a larger group of compounds called flavonoids that occur naturally in plant foods, in this case, the cocoa bean. Flavanols are also found in red wine and tea, but those occurring in the cocoa bean are a unique mixture.
According to a report from Tufts University in Medford, MA, scientists have found that cocoa flavanols positively affect the circulatory system and help maintain the flexibility of arteries. The report states that in 2013, a European Union Commission approved a health claim that 200 mg of cocoa flavanols can help maintain the elasticity of blood vessels, which contributes to normal blood flow.
This is equivalent to 2.5 g of high-flavanol cocoa powder or 10 g of high-flavanol dark chocolate. This cannot easily be compared with a bar of regular chocolate or other edible product, as the concentration of flavanol will depend on the processing and inclusion of other ingredients.

B Levels Of Oxalate Pre/post Fermentation
Overall, fermentation greatly reduced the levels of total oxalate. Fermented cacao seeds contained about 280-235 mg fewer oxalates than unfermented cacao seeds. As well, the levels of insoluble oxalate were greatly reduced during the first few days of fermentation from about 300 mg to 27-77 mg. However, after this initial plunge, there was a slight steady increase between fermentation days 3 and 7. As the mass ferments, the acidity levels become more alkaline, which also encourages soluble oxalates to bind to minerals . This could be the reason for the slight increase in insoluble oxalate as fermentation progressed. Its worth noting that in a study that observed the fermentation of kimchi, insoluble oxalate levels decreased as fermentation progressed, so this idea of increased pH and increased insoluble oxalate requires further studies. The soluble oxalates seemed to rise and then drop slightly between days 3 and 7.

An easy treat that is fun for kids to make! Find a yogurt that is lower in sugar since youll be sweetening it with your toppings. Coconut and almond-based yogurts can be fairly easy to find and kidney-friendly.
To make your own yogurt bark, spread yogurt onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Chop or crush your candy and sprinkle on top of the yogurt. Freeze until solid.
Break into pieces and put into freezer containers. This can keep for several months when frozen!

Dark Chocolate In Moderate Amount
In addition to the above-mentioned contents of dark chocolate, high levels of fat and calorie are also in the list. Generally, dark chocolate is advantageous for ones health, however, it doesnt mean that it should be overeaten. Similar to other food groups, moderate consumption of dark chocolate can be a part of a balanced meal. The suggested daily consumption of dark chocolate is about 6-7 grams thats why we cant get enough of it.
Meanwhile, dark chocolate together with cocoa products includes certain levels of an antinutrient substance known as oxalates. Oxalates play a role in kidney stones formation. The appearance of this substance is commonly known to occur on spinach, parsley, beets, and rhubarb.
Oxalates in Dark Chocolate
Chocolate is known as high oxalate food. If one is at risk for kidney stones, it is highly recommended that dark chocolate or other oxalate-rich food consumption must be in combination with calcium-rich foods. The role of calcium is to bind to soluble oxalates during the process of digestion.
This binding phase results in the creation of oxalates in its insoluble form before its absorption into the bloodstream. But, milk products hinder the effects of polyphenols present in chocolate. Meaning, chocolate consumption due to antioxidant effect while consuming milk at the same time to restrict oxalate absorption may reduce the antioxidant benefits of chocolate.
