Can Xanax Cause Kidney Damage

How Long Do Side Effects Last

Can Zanax Abuse Cause Brain Damage – 24/7 Helpline Call 1(800) 615-1067

The sedative side effects of Xanaxsleepiness, imbalance, coordination problems, and mental impairmentwill go away as the drug is eliminated from the body. With a half-life of 11 hours, alprazolam is cleared from the body in about two days. However, alprazolam is metabolized into substances that work similarly to alprazolam, so it may take longer to fully recover mental sharpness.

Other common side effects on the nervous system, such as dry mouth, hypersalivation, fast heartbeat, and some of the paradoxical side effects will also go away within one to two days of taking the last dose.

Some side effects may require medical treatment such as fast heartbeat, respiratory depression, or severe allergic reactions. Some of these side effects, such as severe allergic reactions or withdrawal, may take days to weeks to resolve even with medical treatment. Xanax withdrawal typically lasts for 1014 days, but in the most severe cases, Xanax withdrawal could persist for up to 12 months and could be fatal.

What Causes Xanax Overdose

Xanax, which is also sold under the generic name, alprazolam, is a central nervous system depressant that is used to treat anxiety, panic disorders, insomnia, and some other conditions. Since the drug has a high potential for abuse, doctors generally try to prescribe the lowest dose possible, starting with 0.25mg.

While some people, like older adults and people with liver failure, are more sensitive to the effects of the drug, anyone who takes too much of it is at risk of experiencing a Xanax overdose. However, other factors can contribute to the likelihood of overdose, including:

  • A persons age and weight
  • How their body metabolizes the substance
  • Kidney problems
  • Whether or not the drug was taken with other drugs or alcohol
  • Taking Xanax regularly and developing a tolerance, resulting in taking increasing doses of the drug

Furthermore, people who take any of the following medications are at higher risk of overdose because of how these substances interact with Xanax.

  • Sedatives
  • Antifungal drugs
  • Alcohol

Xanax is typically swallowed, but some people will crush and snort it. Regardless of how the drug is taken, taking too much Xanax over a short period of time is dangerous and can lead to a life-threatening overdose.

I have high anxiety due to many reasons and just finding out I have CKD has only made it worse. The only way I get any sleep is by taking Xanax, but I’m not sure what effect that has on my kidneys.

Hi scaredandconfused,I’ve a kidney infection and kidney stones right now, and I take xanax with no problems. However, if you are truly concerned, call your pharmacist. Or you can go above to Drugs A to Z and look up Xanax, to read if it will harm your kidneys. Somehow I think not, but calling your pharmacist never hurts!!Best wishes to you!

The Need To Monitor Kidney Function With Certain Drugs

Obtain Xanax And Kidney Failure For You

Experts have suggested that after the initial assessment of kidney function, physicians should consider regular monitoring after starting or increasing the dosage of drugs associated with nephrotoxicity, especially those used chronically in patients with multiple risk factors for impaired kidney function, Dr. Naughton noted. If there is any sign of kidney harm, the provider should review the medications you are taking in order to identify which one is causing the problem.

If multiple medications are present and the patient is clinically stable, physicians should start by discontinuing the drug most recently added to the patients medication regimen. Once that has been taken care of, further harm to the kidneys may be minimized by keeping blood pressure stable, staying hydrated, and temporarily avoiding the use of other medications that may cause nephrotoxicity.

These safety tips can ensure you get the care you need while keeping your kidneys safe. That way, they can tend to essential functions like keeping things flowing .Originally published May 11, 2017

If You Have Kidney Disease Other Medications Can Be Harmful

If your kidneys are already damaged, certain drugs can make them worse or lead to kidney failure. Talk to your doctor before taking cholesterol or diabetes medication, antacid medicine for an upset stomach, or antimicrobial meds, like antifungal and antiviral drugs. In some cases, you may be able to take a smaller dose that’s safer for you.

You also should talk to your doctor before having some kinds of imaging tests. With a magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography scan, doctors sometimes use a dye to help them see a specific area of your body better. In rare cases, this dye can cause serious conditions called contrast-induced nephropathy or nephrogenic systemic fibrosis . Ask your doctor about other tests you might have instead.

Can Xanax Increase Your Risk Of Cancer

Posted on by Sebastian Gonzalez

If youre one of more than 40 million adults in the United States who suffer from an anxiety disorder, then there is a good chance that you have, at some point, been prescribed benzodiazepines . Benzos are used for their anti-anxiety effects and as sleep aids, with the most commonly prescribed including Valium, Ativan, Klonopin, and Xanax, the most popular out of all of them.

Despite the fact that benzodiazepines have been widely used since the 1970s, there is still a lot of uncertainty and controversy surrounding the possibility of extremely serious potential side effects like cancer. Many studies have been conducted to find a definite link between long-term benzo use and cancer, often contradicting each other.

Some studies have found a link, others have not, and more still have found links to only specific kinds of cancer or that only certain benzos seem to increase someones chances of developing cancer.

So can Xanax, the most widely-prescribed benzodiazepine and among the most commonly prescribed mental health medications in general, cause cancer?
