Will My Eating Plan Be Different If I Have Diabetes

If you have diabetes, you need to control your blood sugar to prevent more damage to your kidneys. Your doctor and dietitian can help you create an eating plan that helps you control your blood sugar, while also limiting sodium, phosphorus, potassium and fluids.

You can also ask your doctor to refer you to a diabetes educator who can work with you to better manage your diabetes.

Research On Corn And Diabetes

In countries where high fructose corn syrup is available, or included in products, the prevalence of diabetes is 20% higher than countries that dont have access to it.

Most other research on corn is also based on its byproduct, high fructose corn syrup, none of which is good. Suffice to say, there is no evidence showing the consumption of corn helps with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes treatment. Thats not surprising since corn is a high carb food and high carb foods raise glucose, not lower it, which is your ultimate goal.

On the opposite spectrum, research shows a low carb diet is a great strategy for managing blood sugar, A1c, cholesterol, and body weight.

One study compared the effects of a low carb, high fat diet versus a high carb, low fat diet for patients with type 2 diabetes.

The results showed that both diets did help improve A1c, weight and fasting glucose. But the low carb diet performed much better for overall glucose control, the participants also had lower cholesterol levels, and a greater reduction in medications required.

Another study examined how a low carb Mediterranean diet versus a low fat diet would affect the health of type 2 diabetics over several years.

The researchers found that the people adhering to the low carb Mediterranean diet had lower A1C levels, a higher rate of diabetes remission, and a delayed need for diabetes medication when compared to the group on the low fat, high carb diet.

How Corn Stacks Up Against Other Foods

So, how does corn stack up against other vegetables and starches. I broke this chart into two sections, because I think it should be compared to starches, since it is a grain, and not necessarily vegetables. As I said before, we eat corn as a vegetable in America but it is actually a grain .

As you can see, corn is definitely at the higher end of phos compared to most kidney friendly vegetables but not that much higher. It is only 10 mg higher than peas and 20 mg higher that broccoli. So again, I find corn very appropriate for the renal diet. I do think that it is wise to not make it your vegetable on your plate and consider it more a carbohydrate.

Nutritional Monitoring Of Patients

The reliance on patient funds for healthcare means that we do not request additional clinic visits for patients on LPDs or use multiple Para clinical tests to assess or monitor their nutritional status, because they are generally unaffordable. However, before prescribing the diet, we do evaluate the body mass index of patients without oedema and perform a subjective global assessment of nutritional status using a validated questionnaire. Para clinical assessments are limited to a serum albumin assay, which may be requested if the patient can afford it. This evaluation is performed at each follow-up visit, with the exception of serum albumin which is requested 6-monthly. We have also used haemoglobin and serum phosphorus and cholesterol levels as indicators of nutritional status, measured as part of routine patient care. Adherence to LPD is poor in our practice. Only 36 % of 28 patients prescribed a traditional 0.60.8 LPD in our outpatient clinic were adherent . In our experience, assessments of patient nutritional status during their routine follow-up visits are sufficient and do not significantly increase consultation time.

Best Choices For Your Meal Plan

If you just cannot give up corn completely, make sure you are eating a fresh variety rather than frozen or canned. This ensures you get the most nutritious bang for your buck!

Those that can do without corn may find it better to choose non-starchy vegetables for meals, such as broccoli, kale, peppers, and squash. Watch out for items that contain corn too, like tortillas, corn chips, and popcorn. You can substitute these with whole grain tortillas, nuts, and gluten-free pretzels.

Corn syrup is a popular sweetener found in processed foods, snacks, and sweet drinks. Leave all of these at the store and opt for fresh produce, fresh meats, and nuts and make the switch to drinking water.

Whats The Best Type Of Tortilla

I am often asked, what type of tortillas can I have? This is a great question, since a recent study shows grains are the top source of dietary phosphorus, followed by meat and milk products in the U.S. diet.1 The frequency of consumption makes grains, such as tortillas a top contributor to phosphorus.

Freshly made flour tortillas or uncooked flour tortillas heated for 30 seconds on a skillet are one of the best choices. Once you taste the flavor of fresh tortillas you wont go back! Packaged shelf stable flour tortillas contain phosphates from baking powder and preservatives, although organic flour tortillas can be lower in phosphorus. One 6-inch packaged flour tortilla contains 45 to 65 mg phosphorus per 30 g serving. Organic flour tortillas are at the lower end.

What Are The Ways To Make A Kidney

Best Fruit for Kidney Patients | Apple for kidney disease | Diet for high creatinine patients

If you have diabetes along with kidney disease, you need to control your blood sugar to prevent more damage to your kidneys. A diabetic diet and a kidney-friendly diet share a lot of the same food items, but there are some important differences. There are some ways your kidney-friendly diet and diabetic diet can work together. Below are a few food items that are good for you, if youre diagnosed with both diabetes and kidney disease.

  • Fruits: Berries, papaya, cherries, apples and plums
  • Vegetables: Cauliflower, onions and spinach
  • Proteins: Lean meats , eggs and unsalted seafood
  • Carbohydrates: Whole-wheat breads, sandwich buns, unsalted crackers and pasta
  • Fluids: Water, clear soups and unsweetened tea
  • If you drink orange juice to treat low blood sugar, switch to kidney-friendly apple juice. It will provide the same blood sugar boost with a lot less potassium.
  • Late-stage disease: Your blood sugar levels get better with late-stage kidney disease, possibly because of changes in how the body uses insulin.
  • Dialysis: If you are on dialysis, your blood sugar can increase because the fluid used to filter your blood contains a high blood sugar level. Your doctor will monitor you closely and decide whether you will need insulin and other diabetes medicines.
  • Your doctor and/or dietician will help you to create a meal plan that helps you control your blood sugar level while limiting sodium, phosphorus, potassium and fluids in the body.

Does Corn Fit Into A Kidney

Yes! Corn is generally okay to consume on a kidney-friendly diet. Due to phosphorus content, remember to pay attention to portion sizes and consider what form of corn you are consuming. Some types of corn that are processed or prepared with other ingredients, such as cornmeal, cornbread and corn chips, are higher in phosphorus than other forms of corn, such as popcorn.

Corn is considered to be acceptable in potassium because one serving contains less than 250 mg. Two ounces of cornbread has about 110 milligrams of phosphorus and one 6 inch corn tortilla has about 75 milligrams of phosphorus. Choose And Prepare Foods With Less Salt And Sodium

Why? To help control your blood pressure. Your diet should contain less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium each day.

    • Buy fresh food often. Sodium is added to many prepared or packaged foods you buy at the supermarket or at restaurants.
    • Cook foods from scratch instead of eating prepared foods, fast foods, frozen dinners, and canned foods that are higher in sodium. When you prepare your own food, you control what goes into it.
    • Use spices, herbs, and sodium-free seasonings in place of salt.
    • Check for sodium on the Nutrition Facts label of food packages. A Daily Value of 20 percent or more means the food is high in sodium.
    • Try lower-sodium versions of frozen dinners and other convenience foods.
    • Rinse canned vegetables, beans, meats, and fish with water before eating.

Look for food labels with words like sodium free or salt free or low, reduced, or no salt or sodium or unsalted or lightly salted.

Benefits Of Drinking Cranberry Juice For Kidney Patients

Cranberry juice is known to be helpful in treating urinary tract infections. Urinary tract infections often can turn into kidney infections for patients suffering from kidney failure.

Although cranberry juice may not be beneficial for treating a kidney infection directly but the antioxidants in cranberry juice can play a protective role when it comes to kidney infections by not allowing the infection to spread from the urinary tract to the kidneys.

    Freeze Vegetables For Soup Broth

Can I Eat Corn On A Renal Diet?

Even low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth can have too much sodium and potassium for people with kidney disease. You can make your own vegetable broth by taking your edible vegetable scraps and peelings and freezing them in a plastic bag. Keep adding vegetables until the bag is full, then dump the contents into water and simmer for 20 minutes. Do not add salt. After cooking, strain the broth and freeze it. This will allow you to always have a supply of vegetable broth on hand for cooking, and it costs nothing to make.
