Dogs With Kidney Disease: Diet

When giving food to dogs suffering with kidney failure, the main aim is to reduce the workload of the kidneys. This is because now a dog’s kidneys are no longer able to adequately filter all toxins and keep the dog at a healthy weight. By doing this one aims to prevent a state of malnutrition in the dog.

A dog with renal failure diet should meet the following requirements:

  • It should be low in sodium and phosphorus.
  • The diet should contain proteins of high biological value – rich in essential amino acids – but in moderate portions.
  • Hydration should be of optimum importance. As such, the dog should always have fresh and clean water available, and it will have a preference for wet food.

A diet that meets these principles can be given both through dog food – or homemade dog food, with much debate existing over which is the best method.

The Importance Of Organic Meat For A Dog With Kidney Failure

In my opinion, a raw diet for dogs with kidney disease is the best possible diet. Unless they are end-stage kidney disease, they can and should be fed a normal raw diet. The most important thing to consider is that it needs to be as organic as possible.

The problem is cheap meats can contain phosphates. For example, cheap breast meat is injected with phosphates to suck up water, making the crappy food company more cash per kilo . As a result, so many raw dog foods are made on the cheapest chicken available. This is somewhat inevitable as producers are rarely rewarded for using higher quality meat in their mixes .

Dog Food For Kidney Disease

Recommended dog food for pups suffering from chronic kidney disease typically includes a therapeutic diet containing reduced amounts of sodium, protein and phosphorus, combined with increased levels of omega-3 fatty acids. In some cases, your vet may also recommend potassium.

Why reduce protein for dogs with kidney disease?

Reducing the amount of protein in a dog’s diet remains controversial, however, there are two main goals behind this approach. The first is to help lower the amount of waste produced during protein metabolism and the second is to minimize the amount of protein entering the filtration system of the kidneys.

What this means is that feeding a diet with reduced levels of protein may help to reduce the workload placed on your pup’s kidneys, in turn possibly helping to preserve kidney function for longer.

Why reduce phosphorus for dogs with kidney disease?

As your dog’s kidneys begin to fail, the concentration of phosphorus in their blood becomes elevated. Elevated concentrations of phosphorus have been linked to a number of negative side effects such as vitamin D deficiency and reduced ability for your dog’s body to metabolize calcium. In dogs with chronic kidney disease, normalizing blood phosphorus concentrations through their diet may help to slow the progression of the disease.

Monitoring And Transitioning To A New Routine

The biggest tip I can give those pet parents who have a dog that was recently diagnosed with kidney disease is to: be proactive, learn how to do at home monitoring, slowly transition to the new diet, and final a support network.

Be Proactive.

Many people get overwhelmed with a diagnosis of kidney disease and get information overload. Thus causes them to freeze instead of act. Nutritional management is one of the largest parts of the management plan for chronic kidney disease in dogs.

Get comfortable with at home monitoring.

Id highly recommend speaking with your vet about how to do a muscle conditioning score, body condition score, and check hydration status at home. Along with monitoring the ins and outs aka eating/drinking and urination/defecation these are very helpful, and can help us with more proactive management strategies.

Go slow when you transition to your kidney diet

As these diets are often significantly different composition to your dogs previous diet their body will need to adjust. Too quick of a transition can sometimes lead to side effects from refusing to eat to fluid buildup. Once on a kidney diet transitions between flavors should be relatively easy as all the prescriptive recipes have similar compositions.

Find yourself a support network.

Overall I hope this information helps you and your pup on their journey through life. < 3

Best Foods For A Dog With Kidney Disease

The good news, especially for the overwhelmed pet parent, is that you probably won’t have to get too deep into the weeds to figure out the feeding process. There are dog food brands on store shelves that are formulated for dogs with kidney disease and dog brands that are available by prescription, so you don’t have to set up a corner of your kitchen for food prep, where you’ll be making special doggie meals. You can do that, of course, but you and your veterinarian may decide that you don’t need to.

Still, whatever approach you and your vet decide on, one thing is clear:

“The goal is always going to be high quality foods with low protein. High quality protein but low protein,” says Dr. Julie Bailey, a veterinarian and a professor and dean of Becker College’s School of Animal Studies in Leicester, Massachusetts.

Why is that important?

The kidneys job is to rid the body of toxins, Bailey says, so when the proteins break down, you don’t want there to be an excess of it.

Low phosphorus levels are also important, Dr. Bailey adds.

Phosphorus is an essential mineral, but too much of it can lead to hyperphosphatemia, an electrolyte disturbance in which abnormally elevated levels of phosphate appear in the dog’s blood.

While I am not a vet, and I certainly cant speak for all animals , I can tell you that switching to homemade dog food made the world of difference for Rascal. We had a very unique case with him and his food allergies, but we have also seen other positive changes.

On traditional dog food, Rascal was lethargic, he shed in abundance and his appetite was mediocre. He was also low in his weight class, weighing in at just 64 pounds for a full-sized male Golden Retriever.

Since the dog food switch, he has been energetic, focused, and calmer. He has also put on about 15 pounds in just one year after switching to homemade food. On a traditional diet, were vacuuming at least once a day but now only 1-2x a week. We no longer have to coax Rascal into mealtime and have finally developed a great eating schedule.

    • Needless chemicals including chemical flea and worm treatments, kennel cough treatments, annual boosters for dogs already adequately vaccinated for viruses, etc.

How Can Kidney Diseases In Dogs Be Prevented

Acute kidney failure can be prevented by taking a few steps in making sure your dog is protected from accidental ingestion of toxic substances. Make sure all medications, household cleaning chemicals, insecticides, antifreeze, and other chemicals are all properly resealed and stored in an area that they cannot reach.

Ensure that containers or such substances are also disposed of properly and away from your pups. The garbage can is another thing that bored dogs can easily get into. Here is where they can find a treasure trove of bottles of cleaning materials, discarded chemical-soaked rags, and contaminated food.

The smell of leftover food can definitely attract pups who always have food in their minds. Rotten food thrown in the trash is contaminated with harmful bacteria and possibly other chemicals present in the trash. Make sure that it is covered and not easily accessed by your dogs.

Avoid feeding your pets foods that can be harmful to them. Human foods such as chocolates, raisins, alcohol, coffee, artificial sweeteners, etc.
