Substituting poultry for pork in Chinese diet seemed to reduce risk
THURSDAY, July 14, 2016 — Eating red meat may boost the risk for kidney failure, but swapping even one daily serving of red meat for another protein may reduce the risk, a large study from Singapore suggests.
Red meat intake — in this case, mostly pork — was strongly associated with an increased risk of end-stage renal disease, the loss of normal kidney function. The relationship was also “dose dependent” — meaning the higher the consumption, the greater the risk.
The association held up even after compensating for factors that could skew the results, such as lifestyle and other health conditions, the study authors noted.
“Our findings suggest that patients with chronic kidney disease or the general population worried about their kidney health can still maintain protein intake but consider switching to plant-based sources,” said Dr. Woon-Puay Koh, professor in the Office of Clinical Sciences at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School in Singapore.
“However, if they still choose to eat meat, fish/shellfish and poultry are better alternatives to red meat,” said Koh, one of the study’s authors.
The study adds new data to a conflicting body of evidence on the relationship between protein intake, particularly red meat, and kidney disease, experts noted.
“My opinion is that it’s still perfectly fine for individuals who are otherwise healthy to consume red meat in moderation,” he said.

– Red meat may take a toll on the kidneys that increases risk for kidney disease and eventually kidney failure, a large study suggests.
The authors also found that replacing some red meat in the diet with other types of protein whether chicken, fish, eggs or vegetable sources might dramatically reduce that risk.
There is an increase in numbers of individuals developing chronic kidney disease worldwide, and many progress to end-stage renal disease, which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant, Woon-Puay Koh told Reuters Health by email.
Current guidelines recommend restricting dietary protein intake in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease to help reduce symptoms and slow progression to end-stage renal disease, said Koh, a researcher at the National University of Singapore and the studys senior author.
Though limiting protein staves off progression of existing kidney disease, little is known about whether protein, and meat in particular, contributes to the risk for developing kidney disease, Kohs team writes in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
Globally, an estimated 500 million people have chronic kidney disease, the researchers note.
The National Kidney Foundation says that approximately 660,000 people in the U.S. are being treated for the end-stage kidney disease, kidney failure. Of these, nearly 470,000 are on dialysis and 193,000 have had a kidney transplant.

A Rise In Kidney Disease
An increasing number of people are developing chronic kidney disease ; globally, an estimated 500 million people have CKD. Many patients with CKD go on to develop end-stage renal disease . This is a serious condition that requires kidney dialysis or transplant.
Currently, a reduced protein intake is suggested to patients with CKD to slow the progression to ESRD. However, the role of different protein sources in the development of ESRD has not been investigated previously.
Researcher Woon-Puay Koh and her team delved into data from the Singapore Chinese Health Study, which included more than 63,000 adults, aged 45-74. In China, the primary red meat is pork, accounting for 97 percent of red meat intake. Other popular protein sources included eggs, dairy, shellfish, fish, soy, legumes, and poultry.
The participants were followed up for an average of 15.5 years. During that time, 951 cases of ESRD occurred; the resultant data showed a clear trend.

While the consumption of greater quantities of red meat was associated with a higher incidence of chronic kidney disease, researchers from Iran suggest that making substitutions with other sources of dietary protein may reduce the risk.
The role of dietary protein intake in the progression of kidney disease has always been a critical debate,Parvin Mirmiran, PhD, of the Nutrition and Endocrine Research Center at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, and colleagues wrote. Decline of kidney function was noted with higher intake of animal protein but not plant protein, emphasizing the importance of protein sources rather than the quantity of them regarding adverse health consequences.
