A question I get asked a lot in my work is whether sparkling water can fit in with your renal diet.
Sparkling water is made by adding carbon dioxide under pressure and it comes in many different varieties including mineral water, tonic water and soda water. Carbonation is the process that makes the water effervescent or fizzy. You can buy bottles of fizzy water at your local supermarket or you can make your own using things like soda stream.
Fizzy waters may be enhanced with minerals like sodium and potassium. Other carbonated drinks may contain phosphate additives. Check out my comparison table for some of the mineral and sparkling waters available in Australian supermarkets.

Cola beverages contain phosphoric acid have been associated with urinary changes and can increase the risk of kidney stones. They are high in phosphate and this form of phosphate is almost 100% absorbed by our bodies.
So whats the bottom line?
Plain tap water is the best option for our kidneys. A glass of occasional sparkling water isnt going to be detrimental to your health or kidneys, its all about how much you have. There is very little research on this topic, but one study found that sparkling mineral water damaged enamel only slightly more than still water. Furthermore, mineral water was 100 times less damaging than a sugary soft drink .
In one study, carbonated beverages showed strong potential to destroy enamel but only if they contained sugar.
In fact, a non-carbonated sweet beverage was more harmful than a carbonated sugar-free drink .
Another study placed samples of tooth enamel in various beverages for up to 24 hours. The sugar-sweetened carbonated and non-carbonated beverages resulted in significantly greater enamel loss than their diet counterparts .
A review of several studies found that the combination of sugar and carbonation may lead to severe dental decay .
However, plain sparkling water appears to pose little risk to dental health. Only the sugary types are harmful .
If youre concerned about dental health, try drinking sparkling water with a meal or rinsing your mouth with plain water after drinking it.

Keeping yourself properly hydrated is absolutely necessary for your health. If you don’t like the taste of bland, plain water, sparkling water is a great alternative. Both of these drinks do not contain any calories or sugar in them, but sparkling water may taste better because of its carbonated properties.

Mineral water is rich in calcium. This is important because calcium plays a big role in strengthening your bones so that you are not fragile. Calcium is also great for improving muscle performance, especially that of the heart. It even aids in nerve transmission, hormone secretion, and cell signaling. Different brands of mineral water have different calcium levels, with some as much as 348 mg. So is Perrier bad for you? Definitely not since it has 170 mg of magnesium, fulfilling 17% of your recommended daily values.

Generally speaking, Harvard Health Publishing says that soda water or seltzer is a much better nutritional choice than sugary sodas. High soda intake is linked to chronic health problems like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, and diet soda is associated with health risks, as well.

Over time, that acidity can lead to enamel erosion.
I have seen a lot of patients whose main cause of erosion was an overly acidic diet from citrus to sodas and lack of regular or alkaline water, says Dr. Gause. All of that being said, is safe to consume in appropriate volumes keep it to once a day with meals, at a maximum, and be sure to wash everything down with standard water.
Grause also recommends using a straw if you want to be extra careful, as this allows the seltzer to bypass your teeth.

So youve swapped soda for seltzer, and now youre concerned that youve simply traded one bad habit for another. Good news: As long as youre drinking sparkling water with no added sugars, youve made an A+ choice.

Its important to stay hydrated, but water may be your best choice, experts say
WEDNESDAY, May 15 Drinking large amounts of sugary sodas and fruit drinks might raise your odds for painful kidney stones, a new study finds.
Although drinking extra fluids usually helps prevent stones from forming, researchers from Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston warn that beverages may come with varying risks or benefits. Coffee, tea and orange juice, for example, are associated with a lower risk of kidney stone formation.
On the other hand, we found that higher consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks was associated with a higher incidence of kidney stones, study senior author Dr. Gary Curhan, a physician in the Channing Division of Network Medicine, said in a hospital news release.
The study involved more than 194,000 people tracked for more than eight years. The participants were questioned about their medical history, lifestyle and medications. Information on their diet also was collected every four years.
The researchers found that those who drank one or more servings of sugar-sweetened soda daily had a 23 percent higher risk for kidney stones than those who drank less than one serving per week. The study showed that this also was true for those who drank sugary beverages other than soda, such as fruit punch.
Two experts said there are already many health reasons to avoid sugary drinks.

Cola Drinks Are Not A Proven Remedy

Phosphoric acid, mixed with nitric acid, is used as a cleaner in the beer industry to remove beerstone from beer kegs. It is also used in home cleaning solutions, as an industrial etchant, and as a rust remover. This leads to the false impression that drinking acid phosphates in beverages will create conditions in the kidneys like those in the beer kegs.
In beer kegs, and when you clean your floor with cleaners, high concentrations of a strong acid are applied directly to the unwanted material.
You Cant Get Phosphoric Acid into the Urine
But when the small quantities of phosphoric acid found in dark colas are ingested, the first thing that will happen is that calcium and magnesium binding will occur in the gastrointestinal tract. By the time the remaining phosphoric acid is absorbed, additional buffering will occur in the blood and bone, so essentially neutral not acid phosphate will be delivered to site of the stone. In studies of a neutral phosphates effect on crystal inhibition and dissolution, no evidence of crystal dissolution has been noted.

Researchers measured the citrate and malate content of 15 popular diet sodas. The researchers found that Diet Sunkist Orange contained the greatest amount of total alkali and Diet 7-Up had the greatest amount of citrate as alkali.
This study by no means suggests that patients with recurrent kidney stones should trade in their water bottles for soda cans, said Anthony Y. Smith, MD, an AUA spokesman. However, this study suggests instead that patients with stone disease who do not drink soda may benefit from moderate consumption.
The study was presented at the 104th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association .
