Reasons Why Kidney Patients Should Eat Beets

If your doctor has already alerted you to a kidney problem you have, then you already know how important it is to cleanse your diet to help cleanse your kidney. You dont even have to wait until your kidney suffers, start your beets intake now to improve your diet for the better.

Hello, my name is Suzzie. I am a vet and the owner of two adorable huskies. My story would be something you would consider unexpected lots of people have. Hopefully, it will help a kidney patient out there, or anyone looking for ways to maintain healthy kidneys.

Ive never thought of my lifestyle as downright unhealthy. To be honest, my life is pretty satisfying. I love animals, and I get to do what I love treat them and help their owners take better care of them. There are the sad moments when some of the poor creatures dont make it, but overall? I feel amazing about the countless pets that Ive saved.

It all started with lots of fatigue, shortness of breath, and a feeling like my job wasnt what it used to be. I wasnt enjoying the general weakness I was feeling every day. When I went for a check-up, my doctor told me that I had to cut off my drinking . The dehydration from my lack of taking water and other healthy fluids on a regular basis was affecting one of my kidneys. Luckily, it wasnt too far gone.

Can Too Much Nitric Oxide Be Harmful

People with diabetes have a reduced ability to produce nitric oxide, which may be one reason they have an increased risk of heart disease. Taking these drugs can be potentially dangerous for people who also take nitrate drugs, such as nitroglycerine because they can raise nitric oxide levels too high.

Inhaled Nitric Oxide And Acute Kidney Injury: New Insights From Observational Data

volume 21, Article number: 83

The discovery of nitric oxide generated excitement among intensivists because, as a therapeutic gas, it improved perfusion to ventilated lung units and increased arterial oxygenation without obvious systemic effects. Subsequent randomised trials in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome found short-term improvements in oxygenation, with no effect on mortality and an unexpected increased risk of acute kidney injury . In the absence of compelling biological mechanisms, one explanation could be that nitric oxide was used harmfully in trial protocols as opposed to clinician-directed practice. Although observational investigations can address this hypothesis, they are prone to bias and confounding that persist despite efforts at statistical control during study design or analysis. However, empirical comparisons of treatment effects in randomised trials and observational studies have yielded mixed results , and design alone does not determine the truth of study findings.

Benefits Of Beets #3 They Can Reduce Inflammation In Your Body

The betalain in beets can reduce inflammation, which researchers theorize is partially due to its ability to interfere with the inflammatory signaling process.

The anti-inflammatory effects are so promising that some researchers believe beetroot extract supplements could rival the benefits of certain synthetic drugs.

Inflammation is a factor in many health problems, including heart disease, cancer, and obesity.

One study of individuals with knee pain found that a twice-daily dose of concentrated betalain reduced pain and improved joint function in people suffering from osteoarthritis in their knee joints.

Is it possible the improvement was just a case of the placebo effect? Not likely, because another randomized group was given oat bran powder as a placebo, and the group who ate the oat bran powder saw much less improvement.

Renal Handling Of Nitrate And Nitrite

Nitric Oxide in the Kidney by Jennifer Sasser (English ...

Circulating nitrate and nitrite are mainly excreted by the kidneys, but there is limited knowledge regarding the specific handling of these anions along the nephron. Like other electrolytes, both nitrate and nitrite freely pass the glomerular filtration barrier, and the fractional tubular reabsorption of nitrate has been approximated to 9097% . Excretion of nitrate in the urine correlates with the circulating levels in plasma, and this is mainly regulated via modulation of its tubular fractional reabsorption. This is in agreement with the conclusion that urinary excretion of nitrite and nitrate does not predict renal vascular NO production, but instead reflects the systemic levels. , . Inhibition of carbonic anhydrase using acetazolamide slightly increased urinary excretion of nitrates in rats, whereas furosemide-mediated inhibition of the Na-K-Cl cotransporter , which is mainly expressed in the thick ascending limb, had little effect .

Why Do We Need Arginine

Arginine, also known as L-arginine, is involved in a number of different functions in the body. They include:

  • Wound healing
  • Helping the kidneys remove waste products from the body
  • Maintaining immune and hormone function
  • Dilates and relaxes the arteries

As a natural dietary supplement, arginine has garnered particular attention for its possible heart benefits.

Is Nitric Oxide Safe For Kidneys

Nitric oxide has been implicated in many physiologic processes that influence both acute and long-term control of kidney function. Its net effect in the kidney is to promote natriuresis and diuresis, contributing to adaptation to variations of dietary salt intake and maintenance of normal blood pressure.

Nitric Oxide For Improved Sexual Function

Most men are not aware of this but nitric oxide plays a pivotal role in helping you get hard and firm erections. The secretion of this chemical declines with age and this results in erectile dysfunction in men.

When you get sexually excited, this chemical is secreted in the walls of the blood vessels that supply blood to the penis. This helps penis muscles to relax so that the blood vessels can dilate or open up and allow more blood to flow into the erectile tissue making the penis swell.

Does Nitric Oxide Help Sexually

Nitric Oxide Improves Kidney Function

Nitric oxide is beneficial for physical activity. Nitric oxide supports blood vessels and increases blood flow. L-citrulline is an amino acid that may help treat erectile dysfunction by increasing the production of nitric oxide.

Nitric oxide is needed for the muscles in the penis to relax. In several studies, a combination of L-arginine and Pycnogenol significantly improved sexual function in men with ED.

SEXUAL SYSTEM SUPPORT: L-arginine may stimulate the production of nitric oxide, thus promote male sexual function.

Arginine may also provide support for male fertility and boost libido.

  • Stop taking beetroot juice supplements at least 2 weeks before having surgery
  • If you have cancer talk to your doctor. Some evidence suggests nitric oxide may promote some forms of cancer.
  • Measurement Of Blood Urea Nitrogen Creatinine And Albuminuria

Urea nitrogen concentrations in plasma samples were measured using commercially available spectrophotometric assays according to the manufacturers instruction . Briefly, samples were diluted 1:25 with distilled water and 50 µl of diluted samples and standards were mixed with Color Reagent A and Color Reagent B. Absorbance was measured at 450 nm after incubation for 30 min.

Measurement of urine creatinine was kindly performed by Laboratory HFR, Hospital Fribourgeois using the Jaffes method. Albuminuria was measured by ELISA using a mouse Albuwell kit , according to the manufacturers instructions . Briefly, urine samples diluted 1:25 with NHEBSA and 50 µl of diluted samples and standards were incubated with 30 µl of anti-mouse Albumin Ab-HRP conjugate for 30 min. Subsequently, 100 µl of Color Developer was added to each well and incubated for 10 min. The reaction was stopped by adding 100 µl of Color Stopper. Absorbance was measured at 450 nm. Albumin was normalized by creatinine and albuminuria was quantified by albumin/creatinine ratio . Both creatinine and albumin were measured from 12 h night-time urine collected from animals in metabolic cages.

    Kidneys And Renal Autoregulation

    Nitric oxide for cancer therapy

The kidneys crucially contribute to the regulation of whole -body fluid and electrolyte homeostasis, thus importantly contributing to long-term blood pressure control. Because of intrarenal autoregulatory mechanisms, renal blood flow and GFR are well maintained despite rather large changes in renal arterial perfusion pressure . Such sophisticated autoregulation is mediated by the myogenic response and the tubuloglomerular feedback , which mainly exert their effect via modulation of afferent arteriolar tone . In addition, several hormones and endogenous substances can modulate renal autoregulation and preglomerular resistance , where adenosine, Ang II, NO and have been demonstrated to be of particular importance , -. Abnormal renal autoregulation and altered fluid and electrolyte handling along the nephron may contribute to the development of hypertension, which in turn can induce progressive renal injuries .

    Nitrates Beets And Your Health

So, the big takeaway message here is that vegetables and foods which are high in nitrates likely come with health benefits. There is no evidence showing that they are harmful for those with thyroid disease. In fact, its more likely the opposite!

That said, many lines of evidence have shown that smoked and processed meats, when consumed in amounts above 30 grams per day, can raise the risk of several cancers.

In fact, thyroid cancer may be one which is more probable for those that consume high amounts of dietary nitrites in general. So, it is all about keeping your consumption low.

Bottom Line: Basically, enjoy your beets but go easy on the bacon!
