DR. GOULD:

Three ounces of lemon juice is equal to six tablespoons, and you can typically squeeze that out of two medium-sized lemons. Keep in mind that you must have real lemon juice to get the benefit. So freshly squeezed or store-bought lemon juice is fine. You want to have a pure concentration of real lemon juice, not lemon flavouring. We’re not talking Crystal Light lemonade or anything like that.

For people who don’t like lemons or patients dealing with GERD , we can prescribe citrate pills.

It is advised that you avoid purchasing bottled lemon juice, because the processed lemons are pasteurized and the nutrients are stripped. Here are some of the techniques to prepare lemon juice.

Can lemon juice, lower your risk of getting kidney stones?

Answer:

Yes, lowering the risk of kidney stones can be done by drinking lemon juice. On the other hand, alternative beverages or supplements may do it more effectively.

Lemon juice offers assistance by providing citrate, which binds to calcium in the urine, preventing kidney storms from forming due to calcium. In addition citrate raises the pH of the urine, making it less acidic, which can also diminish the formation of kidney stones. In 20% to 60% of people with kidney stones, the amount of citrate in urine is lower than normal.

To increase citrate in the urine, one needs to increase citrate intake. Consequently, supplementing with potassium citrate, sodium citrate, or potassium-magnesium citrate is often recommended for kidney-stone formers who have hypocitraturia. A typical daily dose is 30 to 60 mEq of potassium citrate divided into two doses taken with or shortly after meals. However, this is a bulky amount of potassium citrate and gastrointestinal side effects occur in approximately 10% of patients using these supplements .

Tip #: Don’t Let The Word Calcium Fool You If You’ve Had A Calcium Oxalate Stone

Uses of Lemon Juice (With images)

DR. GOULD:Calcium oxalate stones are the most common type of kidney stonesreduce

So especially for a lot of females that get kidney stones, a lot of them are at risk for osteoporosis. So we tell them to maintain their normal calcium levels. And if your calcium levels are low, then you might even need to still get supplemented on a calcium supplement.

But again, for everyone who has stones who comes to see us, we can do a metabolic evaluation to check their electrolytes. We can actually see what the calcium level is in the blood, and we can see what the calcium level is in the urine. There can be a variety of reasons for having high calcium in the urine. For example, it can be due to something hormonal, like having a parathyroid gland lesion on a parathyroid gland in the neck, which is the gland that regulates calcium in the body.

Bottom line: Just because you have a calcium oxalate stone, don’t assume you need to limit your calcium. Calcium is important to your diet.

In terms of the oxalate levels, most oxalate is from the diet. There are some very rare genetic diseases where oxalate is not metabolized in the liver correctly, and that can lead to having high oxalate levels. But the majority of people that we see, the oxalate is something that’s from their diet.

Where Do Kidney Stones Come From

Lemon juice remedy for kidney stone

Kidney stones form develop when certain substances, such as calcium, oxalate, and uric acid, become concentrated enough to form crystals in your kidneys. The crystals grow larger into “stones.” About 80% to 85% of kidney stones are made of calcium. The rest are uric acid stones, which form in people with low urine pH levels.

After stones form in the kidneys, they can dislodge and pass down the ureter, blocking the flow of urine. The result is periods of severe pain, including flank pain , sometimes with blood in the urine, nausea, and vomiting. As the stones pass down the ureter toward the bladder, they may cause frequent urination, bladder pressure, or pain in the groin.

“If you experience any of these symptoms, see your primary care physician,” says Dr. Eisner. He or she will perform a urinalysis and may order a renal ultrasound or CT scan to confirm that kidney stones are the source of your pain.

Take Steps To Bypass Kidney Stones

Even though kidney stones can be common and recur once youve had them, there are simple ways to help prevent them. Here are some strategies that can help:

1. Drink enough water. A 2015 meta-analysis from the National Kidney Foundation found that people who produced 2 to 2.5 liters of urine daily were 50% less likely to develop kidney stones than those who produced less. It takes about 8 to 10 8-ounce glasses of water daily to produce that amount.

2. Eat more calcium-rich plant foods.Good sources include yogurt, soy products, beans, lentils and seeds. Dietary calcium binds oxalate in the intestines, so less gets absorbed and lower concentrations end up in urine.

3. Enjoy some lemons. Citrate, a salt in citric acid, binds to calcium and helps block stone formation. “Studies have shown that drinking ½ cup of lemon juice concentrate diluted in water each day, or the juice of two lemons, can increase urine citrate and likely reduce kidney stone risk,” says Dr. Eisner.

4. Watch the sodium. A high-sodium diet can trigger kidney stones because it increases the amount of calcium in your urine. Federal guidelines suggest limiting total daily sodium intake to 2,300 milligrams .

5. Cut back on animal protein. Eating too much animal protein, such as meat, eggs, and seafood, boosts can increase the risk of forming stones. If youre prone to kidney stones, limit your daily meat intake to a quantity that is no bigger than a pack of playing cards.

  • Lemons contain citrate this chemical inhibits calcium stone formation in the kidneys. In addition, it can break down kidney stones.

Lemonade Made With Sugar

Lemonade is unfortunately often recommended for kidney stones. This is likely because of the lemon juice itself is a great source of that stone-inhibiting citrate.

However, the amount of lemon juice and citrate you get from lemonade is minimal. You have to drink an entire 1/2 cup of straight to get 20mEq of citrate.

Importantly, lemonade is usually made with sugar, which increases the risk of kidney stones.

Crystal Light Lemonade* has much more citrate in it compared to regular lemonade. It is sweetened with potassium citrate.
