How Do You Know If You Have Kidney Disease

What Is The Prognosis And Life Expectancy For Kidney Failure Can It Be Prevented

HOW TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE KIDNEY PROBLEMS [Free dialysis video training]

The outlook for kidney failure depends upon the underlying condition that caused it. Kidney function may return to normal, especially if it is due to an acute obstruction and that obstruction is relieved. Other causes of decreased kidney function leading to kidney failure are due to underlying disease and occur slowly over time.

Prevention is the best chance to maintain kidney function, and controlling high blood pressure and diabetes over a lifetime can decrease the potential for progressive kidney damage. Chronic kidney failure may be managed to help monitor electrolyte and waste product levels in the bloodstream. Major abnormalities can be life-threatening, and treatment options may be limited to dialysis or transplant.

How Is Ckd Treated

Damage to your kidneys is usually permanent. Although the damage cannot be fixed, you can take steps to keep your kidneys as healthy as possible for as long as possible. You may even be able to stop the damage from getting worse.

  • Control your blood sugar if you have diabetes.
  • Keep a healthy blood pressure.
  • Follow a low-salt, low-fat diet.
  • Exercise at least 30 minutes on most days of the week.
  • Keep a healthy weight.
  • Do not smoke or use tobacco.
  • Limit alcohol.
  • Talk to your doctor about medicines that can help protect your kidneys.

If you catch kidney disease early, you may be able to prevent kidney failure. If your kidneys fail, you will need dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive.

How Dermatologists Help Patients With Kidney Disease

Kidney doctors, called nephrologists, often care for patients with kidney disease. When a kidney disease affects the skin, a nephrologist may team up with a dermatologist. Some skin conditions that develop due to kidney disease can be difficult to control. For example, if a patient has extremely itchy skin, it may be impossible to sleep through the night. A board-certified dermatologist can help a patient get some relief. This may involve using the right balance of moisturizers and medication that you apply to the skin. Some patients get relief with a treatment called UVB phototherapy.

The right skin care may also help. If the kidney disease is causing extremely dry skin, these tips from dermatologists may help:

What Is The Best Treatment For Me

You should consider many things when choosing a treatment for kidney failure, including your lifestyle, your age, any other health problems you may have, and whether you have a friend or relative to help you. Your decision should be based on more than your medical history and your doctor’s opinion. It should also be based on what you and your family wants. Learning about your treatment choices will help you decide which one is best for you.

Toxin Build Up In The Blood

Uremia is the buildup of waste products in the blood. It is a common problem during stage 5 kidney disease. It affects reproductive hormone health and can lead to impotence in men and infertility in women.

Uremia is when there is a creatine clearance below 10 mL/min. However, some people may get it at a higher eGFR. It has the following symptoms:

  • Nausea

As kidney function declines from too much uremia, the risk for hypoglycemia increases in those with both diabetes and CKD.

Preventing Or Slowing Down The Progression Of Ckd

There are ways to stop CKD becoming any worse or to slow down any progression. You should have checks every now and then by your GP or practice nurse to monitor your kidney function – the eGFR test. They will also give you treatment and advice on how to prevent or slow down the progression of CKD. This usually includes:

  • Blood pressure control. The most important treatment to prevent or delay the progression of CKD, whatever the underlying cause, is to keep your blood pressure well controlled. Most people with CKD will require medication to control their blood pressure. Your doctor will give you a target blood pressure level to aim for. This is usually below 130/80 mm Hg, and even lower in some circumstances.
  • Review of your medication. Certain medicines can affect the kidneys as a side-effect which can make CKD worse. For example, if you have CKD you should not take anti-inflammatory medicines unless advised to by a doctor. You may also need to adjust the dose of certain medicines that you may take if your CKD gets worse.
  • Diet. if you have more advanced CKD then you will need to follow a special diet.;See the separate leaflet called Diet in Chronic Kidney Disease.

Stage 5 Kidney Disease Diet Foods To Avoid

The kidney failure diet may have more restrictions but it is a sure way to preserve kidney function. Read on to learn what stage 5 kidney disease diet foods to avoid.

Avoid Sugary Foods and Drinks

Knowing that sugary foods and drinks elevate blood sugar, these foods should be avoided during stage 5 kidney disease to improve kidney function.;

Added sugar is found in processed foods, drinks, and even some healthy foods. Juices have a lot of sugar and should be eliminated from the diet.

Simple sugars increase the risk of type 2 diabetes and provide no nutrition. The following foods should be avoided

  • White bread

Artificial sweeteners are no better than regular sugar. They have been shown to increase sugar cravings.

Avoid High Sodium Foods;

High sodium foods need to be avoided in those with stage 5 kidney disease. This can preserve kidney health, lower blood pressure, and prevent fluid imbalances.;

High sodium foods to avoid include

  • Table, sea, and garlic salt
  • Soy sauce
  • Bottled sauces like Teriyaki sauce
  • Canned and dehydrated foods and soups
  • Frozen dinners that are not listed as low sodium
  • Processed meats like ham, bacon, hot dogs, sausage, and deli meats
  • Take out, restaurant, and fast food

For a full list of foods high in sodium see this post.

Possibly Avoid Foods Fortified with Calcium

During stage 5 kidney disease if calcium levels are elevated, foods fortified with this nutrient will need to be eliminated from the diet.

Limit High Potassium Foods

  • Artichokes

Avoid Alcohol

Does Kidney Failure Cause Pain

Kidney failure in itself does not cause pain. However, the consequences of kidney failure may cause pain and discomfort in different parts of the body.

Amyloid proteins

Normal functioning kidneys filter amyloid from the blood stream. In kidney failure amyloid proteins in the blood rise, and can separate and clump together forming amyloid deposits into a variety of tissue and organs, including joints and tendons. This can result in symptoms of:

  • Patients who are on dialysis may have discomfort when on the dialysis machine.

Kidney Disease: 11 Ways It Can Affect Your Skin

Signs Of Kidney Disease – How To Find Out If You Have Kidney Disease

If you have kidney disease, you wont see early warning signs on your skin. However, as the disease progresses, you may develop one or more of the following:

  • Extremely dry skin. Skin can become so dry that it:

  • Becomes rough and scaly
  • Feels tight and cracks easily
  • Develops fish-like scales
  • Itchy skin. Extremely itchy skin is a common symptom of advanced kidney disease. The itch can range from irritating to life-disrupting. Your skin may itch all the time.

Some people have itch on one area of their skin. The itch can also spread across most of your body.

  • Scratch marks and other signs of scratching. When you scratch often, it affects your skin. You can develop:

  • Raw, bleeding skin or sores
  • Thick, leathery skin
  • Firm, very itchy bumps
  • Color changes to your skin. When the kidneys stop working as they should, toxins build up in your body. This build-up can cause color changes to the skin. You may see any of the following:

  • An unhealthy pale color
  • Areas of darkened skin, as shown here
  • Yellowish, thick skin with bumps and deep lines
  • Cysts and spots that look like whiteheads
  • Nail changes. Kidney disease can affect the appearance of your fingernails, toenails, or both. People who have advanced kidney disease can develop:

Why Wait Until Your Kidneys Are Diseased

While the study was conducted on people with kidney disease, we could safely extrapolate the recommendations to those who want to avoid kidney disease and achieve optimal kidney function now, especially as we age.

In fact, additional research points to the actuality of physiological changes in the kidneys as we age. The research notes that a progressive reduction of the glomerular filtration rate and renal blood flow are observed in conjunction with aging. The reason for these phenomena is a decrease in the plasma flow in the glomerulus, a bundle of capillaries that partially form the renal corpuscle.2

In addition, the aging kidneys experience other structural changes, such as a loss of renal mass, and decreased responsiveness to stimuli that constrict or dilate blood vessels. The study concludes with a notable summation:

age-related changes in cardiovascular hemodynamics, such as reduced cardiac output and systemic hypertension, are likely to play a role in reducing renal perfusion and filtration. Finally, it is hypothesized that increases in cellular oxidative stress that accompany aging result in endothelial cell dysfunction and changes in vasoactive mediators resulting in increased atherosclerosis, hypertension and glomerulosclerosis.2

    What Are Dialysis And Hemodialysis

How to Know if You Have Kidney Problems (with Pictures ...

Dialysis cleanses the body of waste products in the body by use of filter systems. There are two types of dialysis, 1) hemodialysis and 2) peritoneal dialysis.

Hemodialysis uses a machine filter called a dialyzer or artificial kidney to remove excess water and salt, to balance the other electrolytes in the body, and to remove waste products of metabolism. Blood is removed from the body and flows through tubing into the machine, where it passes next to a filter membrane. A specialized chemical solution flows on the other side of the membrane. The dialysate is formulated to draw impurities from the blood through the filter membrane. Blood and dialysate never touch in the artificial kidney machine.

For this type of dialysis, access to the blood vessels needs to be surgically created so that large amounts of blood can flow into the machine and back to the body. Surgeons can build a fistula, a connection between a large artery and vein in the body, usually in the arm, that allows a large amount of blood to flow into the vein. This makes the vein swell or dilate, and its walls become thicker so that it can tolerate repeated needle sticks to attach tubing from the body to the machine. Since it takes many weeks or months for a fistula to mature enough to be used, significant planning is required if hemodialysis is to be considered as an option.

What You Should Know About Chronic Kidney Disease

Work with your health care team on a treatment plan thats right for you.

Kidneys that function properly are important for maintaining good health. More than 1 in 7 American adults are estimated to have chronic kidney disease , which affects how well kidneys function. Find out what you should know if you are diagnosed with CKD.

Your kidneys work hard. Every 30 minutes, they filter all your blood to remove wastes, poisons, and excess fluid from your body. Kidneys also help control blood pressure and produce several vital hormones. Kidneys that function properly are important for maintaining good health.

CKD refers to the loss of kidney function over time. This means that the kidneys are not able to filter fluids as well as they should. The excess fluid and waste that arent filtered remain in the body. This may cause other health problems, including heart disease and stroke.

The two main causes of CKD are diabetes and high blood pressure. About 1 in 3 adults with diabetes and 1 in 5 adults with high blood pressure have CKD.

People may not feel sick or notice any symptoms until CKD is advanced. The only way people find out if they have CKD is through simple blood and urine tests. The blood test checks for creatinine in the blood to see how well the kidneys work. The urine test checks for protein in the urine .
