Is A Celery Juice Cleanse Effective
Some research suggests that celery juice can boost the immune system. People are often attracted to the idea of juicing because it reportedly provides a quick and hydrating way to get lots of nutrients from vegetables. Indeed, vegetables are a suitable source of antioxidants.
Though celery juice can be nutritious, there appears to be more scientific evidence suggesting that a juice cleanse can negatively impact the body. Although a person will experience a reduced calorie intake, a cleanse does not offer an effective long-term solution to weight loss or general health problems.
Before starting a juice cleanse, people should consult with a doctor or nutritionist to confirm whether they need to amend their diet or juicing plan to protect their overall health.
Many people claim a celery juice cleanse has numerous benefits. However, there is no scientific evidence featuring controlled trials to back up these claims.
Some of these unproven statements say celery juice cleanses can:
- reduce inflammation
One of the biggest risks associated with these unsupported claims is that individuals with serious health concerns, such as cancer, may turn to cleanses instead of actual medical treatments.
Other potential risks a person may experience include:
A person can juice celery optimally by:
- using a bunch of fresh celery to prepare the juice
- washing the celery before adding it to a juicer
- chopping the stalks into pieces and placing them into a juicer
Drink the celery juice within 2 days.
Being Your Own Advocate With Your Kidneys
When it comes to living with kidney disease, recovery usually does not happen once your GFR has chronically declined to the advanced stages. Hence, the emphasis really needs to be on prevention. The next time you see your healthcare provider make sure to discuss the results of your GFR and ask if you should be seen by a specialist.
How Is Kidney Failure Treated
Kidney failure treatment is determined by the cause and extent of the problem. Treating your chronic medical condition can delay the progression of kidney disease. If your kidneys start losing their function gradually, your doctor may use one or more methods to track your health. By watching you closely, your doctor can help you maintain your kidneys function as long as possible.
Your doctor may gauge your kidney function with:
- Routine blood tests
- Blood pressure checks
Because the kidneys serve such an important purpose, people in kidney failure need treatment to keep them alive. The main treatments for kidney failure are:
- Dialysis: This treatment helps the body filter the blood .
- In hemodialysis, a machine regularly cleans your blood for you. People often receive this kidney failure treatment at a hospital or dialysis clinic, 3 or 4 days each week.
- Peritoneal dialysis cleans the blood in a slightly different way using a dialysis solution and a catheter. Sometimes, people can do their treatment at home.

Nephrostomy Performed By Skilled Specialists
The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located on each side of the spine in the lower back. They produce urine, which flows to the bladder through narrow tubes called ureters.
When a ureter is blocked and unable to drain urine, doctors may perform a nephrostomy to allow the placement of thin plastic tubes that will divert the urine and prevent kidneys from backing up and malfunctioning. During this procedure, doctors place a hollow, flexible tube into the kidney and connect it to an external drainage bag. This allows urine to easily leave the body. These tubes need to be monitored and changed at regular intervals to work properly.
At UT Southwestern, our interventional radiology team manages not just the procedure but also provides the complete cycle of care. Our dedicated nephrostomy tube care clinic offers routine nurse visits and serves as the cornerstone to provide much-needed support for patients after the tube is placed. We answer all questions related to tube care, including supplies and follow-up procedures. The IR-driven nephrostomy care model was introduced to fill a gap for these patients and is unique to UT Southwestern.

What Are The Symptoms Of Kidney Failure
In early stages of kidney disease, many people experience few or no symptoms. Its important to note that chronic kidney disease can still cause damage even though you feel fine.
Chronic kidney disease and kidney failure can cause different symptoms for different people. If your kidneys arent working properly, you may notice one or more of the following signs:
- Poor appetite or metallic taste of food
Why Are The Kidneys So Important
Most people know that a major function of the kidneys is to remove waste products and excess fluid from the body. These waste products and excess fluid are removed through the urine. The production of urine involves highly complex steps of excretion and re-absorption. This process is necessary to maintain a stable balance of body chemicals.
The critical regulation of the body’s salt, potassium and acid content is performed by the kidneys. The kidneys also produce hormones that affect the function of other organs. For example, a hormone produced by the kidneys stimulates red blood cell production. Other hormones produced by the kidneys help regulate blood pressure and control calcium metabolism.
The kidneys are powerful chemical factories that perform the following functions:
- remove waste products from the body
- remove drugs from the body
- balance the body’s fluids
- release hormones that regulate blood pressure
- produce an active form of vitamin D that promotes strong, healthy bones
- control the production of red blood cells
Below you will find more information about the kidneys and the vital role they play in keeping your body functioning.

When I Tell People What I Do For Work I Often Hear: Youre A Childrens Kidney Doctor Do Kids Even Get Kidney Disease
Sadly, the answer is yes. In 2011, 1,358 children in the United States developed end stage renal disease , which means that they needed to start dialysis or have a kidney transplant . There is not good data regarding how many children in the US have chronic kidney disease , which means that their kidney function is impaired, but they dont need dialysis or a transplant. Developmental abnormalities of the kidneys and urologic tract are the most common cause of kidney disease in children.

Flushing The Nephrostomy Tube
The nephrostomy tube needs to be flushed two to three times a week, and more often if urine is draining slowly, to prevent urine from crystallizing and clogging the tube. If the tube becomes clogged, urine will not be able to drain from your kidney into the nephrostomy bag, which could result in an infection. You should flush your nephrostomy tube more often when the urine becomes cloudy or urine draining becomes slow.
What Indicates Kidney Infection In Urine Test
The most common lab tests to help diagnose a kidney infection are two types of urine test: Urinalysis For this test, you’ll urinate into a container at your doctor’s office or lab. A sample of your urine will be viewed under a microscope, to look for bacteria or white blood cells, which can indicate an infection.5 thg 11, 2018

What Causes Kidney Failure
The most common causes of kidney failure are diabetes and high blood pressure. Sometimes, though, kidney failure happens quickly due to an unforeseen cause.
When the kidneys lose function suddenly , its called acute kidney failure . This type of kidney failure is often temporary. Common causes of acute kidney failure can include:
- Autoimmune kidney diseases
- A urinary tract obstruction
- Uncontrolled systemic disease like heart or liver disease
Kidney failure usually doesnt happen overnight. Chronic kidney disease refers to a group of health conditions that affect how well your kidneys function over time. If left untreated, chronic kidney disease can lead to kidney failure.
The biggest causes of kidney failure from chronic kidney disease are:
- Diabetes: Unmanaged diabetes can lead to uncontrolled blood sugar levels. Consistently high blood sugar can damage the bodys organs, including the kidneys.
- High blood pressure: High blood pressure means blood travels through your bodys blood vessels with increased force. Over time, untreated high blood pressure levels can damage the kidneys tissue.
Other causes of chronic kidney disease include:
- Polycystic kidney disease, a hereditary condition where cysts grow inside your kidneys.
- Glomerular diseases, such as glomerulonephritis, which affect how well the kidneys can filter waste.
- Lupus and other autoimmune diseases that can affect multiple body systems.
What Does It Mean To Have Kidney Disease How Do I Know If I Have It
It is important to know that while we cant regenerate kidneys, we can treat CKD so people can live with it. Children still go to school, hang out with friends, and play sports. Early detection is helpful because people can be treated before they feel poorly. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children have their blood pressure taken at their check-ups starting at age 3. This is one way we detect kidney disease. Other times, children are tested because they arent growing well, have urinary problems, or are overly tired. Watch for these symptoms and talk to your doctor if you are concerned.
Because CKD is relatively rare in children, we do not routinely screen for it. However, the case is different for adults: the National Kidney Foundation recommends that patients with high blood pressure, diabetes, who are over 60 or who have a family history of kidney disease get blood and urine tests to check for kidney disease.

What Is A Cleanse
A cleanse or detox involves removing specific foods from a persons diet designed to eliminate toxins from the body. This can come in the form of a fast, diet, drink, or powder.
However, the body already performs a natural cleansing process. The digestive tract, liver, kidneys, and skin are responsible for breaking down toxins through urine, stool, or sweat.
A juice cleanse is a diet where people only consume juices derived from fruits and vegetables. A cleanse can bring some nutritional benefits. However, doctors have identified certain health risks associated with a cleanse, such as organ damage.
Nutrition plays an important role in supporting health, but even nutritious celery juice does not have beneficial properties.
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health , the limited research on the effects of detoxes and cleanses suggests some might lead to initial weight loss. However, this weight typically returns when people go back to their routine diet. Additionally, there is no research proving that cleanses eliminate toxins.
However, celery does contain oxalates, which can be harmful to the kidneys at very high levels. In one case, a person severely damaged their kidneys through juice fasting.
Problems associated with celery juice cleanses include:
- If the celery juice does not receive treatment to prevent bacteria growth, it

Symptoms Of Kidney Disease
In order to understand the more common symptoms of kidney disease, it’s helpful to review the structure and function of the kidneys. Your kidneys are located on your flanks, near your spine. Injuries to your back or side below your diaphragm may cause injuries to your kidneys. Your kidneys perform several important functions. These include filtering your blood to remove toxins, maintaining the proper levels of electrolytes to ensure proper functioning of your cells, and maintaining fluid balance in your body.
If you become dehydrated, your kidneys initially work to restore the fluid status to your body, but kidney injuries may occur with prolonged or severe dehydration. If your kidneys are not functioning properly, the level of sodium and potassium in your body may be affected. Electrolyte problems with kidney disease can be serious, Since the right amount of potassium is necessary for proper functioning of your heart, kidney problems may result in abnormal heart rhythms.
Abnormal blood pressure, whether high or low can result in kidney damage. Kidney damage, in turn, can cause problems with regulating your blood pressure.
The kidneys are also responsible for making a hormone involved in the production of red blood cells. For this reason, kidney disease can result in anemia, a lower red blood cell count.
Some people have urinary problems, such as difficulty urinating. Occasionally people also have flank pain, due to the location of the kidneys.
What Do The Kidneys Do
The kidneys have several jobs. One of the most important is helping your body eliminate toxins. The kidneys filter your blood and send waste out of your body in urine.
The kidneys are bean-shaped organs about the size of your fist. They sit under your ribcage, toward your back. Most people have two working kidneys, but people can live well as long as at least one is working correctly.
When the kidneys dont work effectively, waste products build up in your body. If this happens, you might feel sick. In the most serious situations, kidney failure can be life-threatening. However, many people can manage kidney failure with the right treatment.

Where Are The Kidneys And How Do They Function
There are two kidneys, each about the size of a fist, located on either side of the spine at the lowest level of the rib cage. Each kidney contains up to a million functioning units called nephrons. A nephron consists of a filtering unit of tiny blood vessels called a glomerulus attached to a tubule. When blood enters the glomerulus, it is filtered and the remaining fluid then passes along the tubule. In the tubule, chemicals and water are either added to or removed from this filtered fluid according to the body’s needs, the final product being the urine we excrete.
The kidneys perform their life-sustaining job of filtering and returning to the bloodstream about 200 quarts of fluid every 24 hours. About two quarts are removed from the body in the form of urine, and about 198 quarts are recovered. The urine we excrete has been stored in the bladder for anywhere from 1 to 8 hours.
Support Services For Nephrostomy
The Interventional Radiology Clinic will arrange a virtual nurse visit two weeks after your tube is placed. During your two-week visit the nurse will instruct you about the nephrostomy tube care. The tube will need to be changed every three months.
An appointment will be set up during the virtual visit for your next routine exchange. If you have any tube-related issues such as decreased output/pain, please arrange a virtual visit with the nurse. It is important to identify tube failure early to avoid life-threatening infection.

Nephrostomy: What To Expect
During the procedure, which typically takes less than an hour, the patient lies prone with one side propped up by a pillow. The patient is given pain medication and a sedative to help avoid any pain during the procedure.
Guided by ultrasound and fluoroscopy , our interventional radiologist inserts a needle into the kidney and places a guide wire through the needle. The doctor then positions the nephrostomy tube into the kidney over the wire.
The tube is connected to an external drainage bag, which will need to be emptied periodically. The exit site for the nephrostomy tube will be covered with a dressing.
