However, the symptoms are only experienced as the stones grow in size, making it difficult to pass through the ureter. Although dealing with kidney stones can be really painful, here are few foods you should avoid or limit their intake to stay healthy.

Spinach: According to Dr Deepshikha Agarwal, a Mumbai-based dietitian and sports nutritionist, Spinach contains oxalate, which binds calcium to form calcium oxalate crystals or stones while urine is produced by the kidneys. And if you eat more spinach you are more likely to aggravate the condition. Hence, people with kidney stones are recommended to eat spinach once or twice a week, not more. Calcium Rich Fruits Are Great For Kidney Stones:

Calcium rich fruits are also beneficial for kidney stones. Oranges are known to be one of the finest sources of calcium. Apart from oranges, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries are also some other fruits that contain fair amount of calcium in them and are good fruits for kidney stones. They have more than 20 mg of calcium each.

Apart from these fruits some of the dry fruits, such as dried plums, dried pears, dried apricots and seedless raisins are also good fruits containing fair amount of calcium in them. You can add these fruits to your diet if you have kidney stones.

Potatoes And Kidney Disease: The Verdict

People with kidney disease CAN enjoy potatoes! YAY! This myth came to be because potatoes are high in potassium. However, most people with kidney disease DO NOT need to limit potassium! In fact, many people with kidney disease actually need to eat MORE potassium.

Some people with kidney disease, especially those with advanced stages of disease, do struggle with high blood potassium levels. If this is you, you can STILL enjoy potatoes occasionally. You just need to count them as one of your high potassium food choices.

A tip for those of you that REALLY love potatoes. Boil your potatoes to reduce potassium by about half. This will make potatoes much safer to eat for people with high potassium levels.

    Blood Sugar

    High blood sugar can worsen hyperkalemia. If you have diabetes, it is important to do everything you can to keep your blood sugar at a healthy level to protect your kidneys, while also keeping potassium within a healthy range. A healthy diet for diabetes is crucial to help keep blood sugar under control.

    Acidosis

    Too much acid in your blood can also worsen high potassium levels. Your kidney doctor regularly measures how much acid in is your blood and might prescribe medications to reduce acid, such as a medication called sodium bicarbonate. Diet can also affect the amount of acid in your body.

    Here are the five ways to help prevent kidney stones:

    Drink plenty of water: Drinking extra water dilutes the substances in urine that lead to stones. Strive to drink enough fluids to pass 2 liters of urine a day, which is roughly eight standard 8-ounce cups. It may help to include some citrus beverages, like lemonade and orange juice. The citrate in these beverages helps block stone formation.

    Eat calcium rich foods: Dietary calcium binds to oxalate in your intestines and thereby decreases the amount of oxalate that gets absorbed into the bloodstream and then excreted by the kidney. This lowers the concentration of oxalate in the urine, so there is less chance it can bind to urinary calcium. That leads to decreased risk of kidney stones.

    Reduce sodium: A high-sodium diet can trigger kidney stones because it increases the amount of calcium in your urine. So, a low-sodium diet is recommended for the stone prone. Current guidelines suggest limiting total daily sodium intake to 2,300 mg. If sodium has contributed to kidney stones in the past, try to reduce your daily intake to 1,500 mg. This will also be good for your blood pressure and heart.

    Avoid stone-forming foods: Beets, chocolate, spinach, rhubarb, tea, and most nuts are rich in oxalate, which can contribute to kidney stones. If you suffer from stones, your doctor may advise you to avoid these foods or to consume them in smaller amounts.
