That’s one of the unexpected findings from the researchers conducting a long-term study of the now infamous E. coli contamination of the water supply in Walkerton, Ont.
In their on-going examination of the town’s residents, the researchers recently noticed some people are passing a huge amount of urine containing protein, usually a sign of kidney damage.
At first, the researchers thought the residents’ kidneys had been impaired by the original bacterial contamination in May of 2000. But on closer examination, they found some folks were drinking between 14 and 30 glasses of water a day. That’s a huge volume of liquid for the kidneys to filter and it might be damaging the organs, said Dr. William Clark, lead investigator of the Walkerton health study.
“We suspect people are doing it because they think it’s good for them,” Dr. Clark said in an interview. What’s more, he is concerned the habit of drinking excessive amounts of water extends far beyond Walkerton. “We think this is happening across Canada and the Western world.” He noted that many people on the popular low-carbohydrate, high-protein Atkins diet are encouraged to drink lots of water.

According to a large-scale study conducted on over 14,000 adults, about 1.7 percent of the general population has hyponatremia. Women and individuals with certain conditions, such as stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure and mental disorders, are at greater risk, according to findings published in the American Journal of Medicine in December 2014.
Drinking too much water can affect your kidneys’ ability to excrete it, as the Mayo Clinic points out. The excess fluid may reduce sodium levels in your body, causing electrolyte imbalances. Other potential causes of hyponatremia include hormonal disorders, diarrhea, vomiting, kidney disease and the use of certain medications or illegal drugs.

Upon careful reflection, it seems to me that this would be the worst possible time to drink water unless you really enjoy waking up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.
First off, as we have mentioned before, it is a myth that we must drink 6-8 glasses of water a day to be healthy.
