Polyphenols Alter The Gut Microbiota Composition

Some phenolic compounds with bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity have been considered as potential antimicrobial agents. It has been shown that these can be used to prevent bacterial infections in the stomach and urinary epithelium . The effects of common polyphenols on the growth of human intestinal bacteria and their adherence to enterocytes were investigated by Parkar et al. . The in vitro viability of representative gut microflora was found to be affected by doses of polyphenols equivalent to concentrations likely to be present in the gastrointestinal tract, but these effects depended on the type of polyphenols analyzed, and did not include rutin .

Polyphenol-rich cocoa decreased the Firmicutes/ Bacteriodetes ratio and increased Faecalibacterium prausnitzii levels in pigs . The countering of intestinal microbiota dysbiosis in rats fed with an HFD and sucrose diet inhibited body weight gain, decreased serum insulin, reduced the Firmicutes/Bacteriodetes ratio, and restricted bacterium production associated with lifestyle-associated obesity . A relative increase in the abundance of bactericides in subjects drinking red wine polyphenols has also been reported .

Packaged Instant And Premade Meals

Processed foods can be a major component of sodium in the diet.

Among these foods, packaged, instant, and premade meals are usually the most heavily processed and thus contain the most sodium.

Examples include frozen pizza, microwaveable meals, and instant noodles.

Keeping sodium intake to 2,300 mg per day may be difficult if youre eating highly processed foods regularly.

Heavily processed foods not only contain a large amount of sodium but also commonly lack nutrients .

SUMMARY

Packaged, instant, and premade meals are highly processed items that can contain very large amounts of sodium and lack nutrients. Its best to limit these foods on a renal diet.

Swiss chard, spinach, and beet greens are leafy green vegetables that contain high amounts of various nutrients and minerals, including potassium.

When served raw, the amount of potassium varies between 140290 mg per cup .

While leafy vegetables shrink to a smaller serving size when cooked, the potassium content remains the same.

For example, one-half cup of raw spinach will shrink to about 1 tablespoon when cooked. Thus, eating one-half cup of cooked spinach will contain a much higher amount of potassium than one-half cup of raw spinach.

Raw Swiss chard, spinach, and beet greens are preferable to cooked greens to avoid too much potassium.

However, moderate your intake of these foods, as theyre also high in oxalates. Among sensitive individuals, oxalates can increase the risk of kidney stones (

Abstract

1. Introduction

Systemic inflammation and oxidative stress are nontraditional risk factors that are associated with premature cardiovascular disease commonly observed in patients with chronic kidney disease . Oxidative stress, which is characterized by an imbalance between oxidative free radical production and antioxidant capacity, appears to be the link between inflammation and cardiovascular disease in dialysis patients . Moreover, in nondialysis CKD stage, oxidative mechanisms can be involved in renal tissue injury, in which the oxidative stress is associated with the progression of CKD itself .

2. Inflammation and Oxidative Stress in CKD

Inflammation and oxidative stress are interrelated conditions . Oxidative free radicals are generated by phagocytic immune cells in response to inflammatory stimuli and released with proinflammatory cytokines, which in turn amplify the generation of oxidants . To prevent the harmful effects of the oxidative status, enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant systems counteract oxidative free radicals .

In Vitro Studies: Effects Of Resveratrol On Mesangial Cells

Glomerular mesangial cells occupy a central position in the renal glomerulus forming the central tuft-like structure of the glomerular microvasculature, involved in the generation of inflammatory mediators , and are responsible for the contractile function. Mesangial cells contract or relax to modify glomerular filtration locally in response to vasoconstrictive or vasorelaxant agents, respectively . Mesangial matrix expansion and vaso-mediator release result in decreased glomerular surface area and hemodynamics, reducing GFR. Mesangial cell function is affected by immunologic injury and metabolic disease, resulting in impaired filtration .

Vodka And Wine Consumption: Good For Your Liver

Supplements for Kidney Disease. Dietitians Insights on commonly promoted supplements

Approximately 50 million Americans are affected by metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is defined as hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, high blood pressure and glucose intolerance leading to type 2 diabetes mellitus. Patients with metabolic syndrome have an increased risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease. Modifiable risk factors for metabolic syndrome include those which can be reversed by the actions of the patient such as alcohol consumption.

Fig. 1.

Moderate consumption of alcohol is thought to be beneficial to human health however excessive consumption is thought to be detrimental. Autophagy is a physiological process in the body that serves to maintain homeostasis by protein degradation and turnover of destroyed cells allowing new cell formation during times of stress.

In this study, we found that moderate alcohol consumption alters apoptosis and autophagy signaling in the liver. Interestingly, vodka may induce pro-apoptotic pathways in liver tissue, whereas wine may induce anti apoptotic signaling. These results provide a mechanism by which vodka may contribute to alcoholic liver disease and supports the notion that red wine, containing resveratrol, may prevent cellular apoptosis in liver tissue in the setting of metabolic syndrome.

Effects Of Resveratrol On Human Kidneys

Only two clinical studies exist measuring the effects of RSV in humans with kidney disease. In a randomized, double-blinded pilot study by Saldanha et al. , administration of RSV for 4 weeks to non-dialyzed chronic kidney disease patients resulted in no significant effects. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory marker levels were the same in RSV and placebo supplemented participants . It should be emphasized that administration of RSV for 4 weeks had low toxicity.

Drinking Plenty Of Fluids

Water helps to clear toxins and sodium from your kidneys and staying hydrated is essential for staying healthy, so you should worry more about drinking 8 glasses of water than what vitamins are good for kidneys. Regular and consistent water intake is great for your kidneys, and the cliché 8 glasses a day advice is a good goal, though you should tailor your intake based on your lifestyle and health factors.

Diet And Kidney Disease

Dietary restrictions vary depending on the level of kidney damage.

For example, people in the early stages of kidney disease have different restrictions than those with kidney failure, also known as end-stage renal disease .

If you have kidney disease, your health care provider will determine the best diet for your needs.

For most people with advanced kidney disease, its important to follow a kidney-friendly diet that helps decrease the amount of waste in the blood.

This diet is often referred to as a renal diet.

It helps boost kidney function while preventing further damage .

While dietary restrictions vary, its commonly recommended that all people with kidney disease restrict the following nutrients:

  • Sodium.Sodium is found in many foods and a major component of table salt. Damaged kidneys cant filter out excess sodium, causing its blood levels to rise. Its often recommended to limit sodium to less than 2,000 mg per day (

Salt/sodium Are Bad For Kidneys

Body of human beings require a small amount of sodium to maintain a perfect balance of fluids, which one can get enough by eating vegetables and fruits. However, most of the processed foods add relatively large number of salt to enhance flavors. Table salt is one of the commonly used forms of salt. When you eat salt in excessive amount, your kidneys give response via retention of water to dilute the electrolyte present in the bloodstream for maintaining proper function of the heart, which put a huge load on kidneys.

Sglt2 Inhibitors And Chronic Kidney Disease

Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor drugs like dapagliflozin , canagliflozin , and empagliflozin are drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes. SGLT2 inhibitors reduce sodium and glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, resulting in increased glucose and sodium excretion in the urine .

SGLT2 inhibitors have been shown in large clinical trials to improve kidney-related outcomes in people with diabetes and those without diabetes. These benefits appear to be independent of these drugsâ glucose-lowering effects . Among the proposed mechanisms for these benefits are a reduction in kidney workload and improvement in oxygen dynamics lowering of blood pressure in the kidneys anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic effects within the kidneys and diuretic effects .

A 2021 meta-analysis examined results from seven studies with over 1,700 type-2 diabetic subjects in which SGLT2 inhibitors were combined with blood pressure medications known as renin-angiotensin system blockers . Compared with the blood pressure drugs alone, the combination resulted in greater reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and body weight, and greater improvement in kidney function and hemoglobin A1C. However, the combination therapy increased the risk of hypoglycemia .

In Vitro Studies: Effects Of Resveratrol On Renal Epithelial Cells

A Little Wine Might Help Kidneys Stay Healthy

Injury in renal epithelial cells results in renal dysfunction and necrosis associated with renal failure . In a study by Lee et al. , treatment of glomerular epithelial cells with RSV resulted in reduced de novo protein synthesis . Under high glucose conditions, liver kinase B1 , the kinase upstream of AMP-activated protein kinase , is acetylated, resulting in decreased LKB1 activity. RSV treatment prevented the high glucose-induced acetylation of LKB1 resulting in increased LKB1 activity and increased downstream phosphorylation/activation of AMPK . RSV treatment inhibited the high glucose-induced fibronectin content. Additionally, the high glucose-induced RNA cap binding protein eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E phosphorylation and the increase in eIF4G, eukaryotic translation elongation factor 2 , and ribosomal protein S6 kinase protein levels were abolished with RSV treatment .

What Makes Resveratrol The Best Supplement For Kidney Disease?

Resveratrol, a plant compound commonly found in grapes and red wines, has been shown to improve heart health and even help prevent certain cancers. But, did you know, its also been recently shown to help improve polycystic kidney disease significantly.

The mechanism by which it does this involves its substantial antioxidant properties. Resveratrol is very effective when it comes to scavenging reactive oxygen species, substances which damage DNA over time, and it additionally can help shield against age-related ailments like kidney disease. Antioxidants, which are abundant in Resveratrol, also help boost immunity which aids the body in ridding itself of any illnesses.

Resveratrol can help delay the progression of polycystic kidney disease due to these properties, and many more. In polycystic kidney disease, the kidneys develop noncancerous sacs which cluster around and damage the organs over time. In a recent study, participants with polycystic kidney disease or PKD as its commonly known, experienced reduced blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels, a decrease in cyst volume density and a significant reduction in inflammation. In 3D models, it even was able to prevent new cysts from forming. Needless to say, this is very promising news for PKD patients.
