How To Prevent Kidney Stones
Because hydration is key for preventing kidney stones, drinking lots of water will help move them along since they need to be flushed out of the body. We recommend consuming any soda in moderation, and if you must, stick to the light citrus types that have less sugar and chemicals. Please note, its best to avoid soda altogether if kidney stones run in your family.
Alternatives to soda include fresh fruit juices. Orange juice has been studied and shown to decrease the risk of stone formation. Fresh-squeezed lemonade is also great for preventing the formation of kidney stones. These beverages are high in citrate which binds to calcium in the urinary tract, preventing stone formation.

People who drink lots of sugar-sweetened soda and fruit juices may be more likely to develop chronic kidney disease than those who don’t, a U.S. study suggests.
Researchers examined survey data on beverage consumption among 3,003 African-American men and women who were 54 years old on average and didn’t have kidney disease. After following participants for about 8 to 10 years, researchers found that 185 people, or 6 percent, developed chronic kidney disease.
After researchers accounted for factors that can contribute to kidney damage such as smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and inactivity, they found that drinking mainly sodas and sweetened fruit drinks were associated with a 61 percent higher risk of kidney disease.When researchers looked at beverages individually, however, they found soda was the main culprit.

Can Diet Soda Prevent Kidney Stones
CHICAGODrinking diet soda may help patients with stone disease, data suggest.
According to researchers at the University of California at San Francisco, the citrate and malate content in commonly consumed sodas may be sufficient to inhibit the development of calcium stones.
There is a lot of interest in dietary therapy for kidney stone disease, said lead investigator Brian Eisner, MD, a clinical urology fellow. We know that one of the many reasons people are prone to stone formation is that they have a low dietary alkali intake or a low urinary citrate.
Up to 85% of stones that develop in Americans are made of calcium oxalate. Citrate prevents calcium from binding with oxalate in the urine malate can increase the alkali content of urine, enhancing the benefits of citraturia.
Dr. Eisner and his colleagues measured the citrate and malate content of 15 popular diet sodas. The results showed that Diet Sunkist Orange contained the greatest amount of total alkali and Diet 7-Up had the greatest amount of citrate and a high alkali content.
The colas didnt do as well, Dr. Eisner said in an interview. The colas really had very minimal or no citrate or alkali content.
This is a big public health issue. It takes a lot of health dollars , and certainly anything that we can do to help prevent stones from occurring will be a benefit for the patients and the system, said Dr. Eisner, who reported findings here at the American Urological Association Annual Meeting.

This randomised controlled trial investigated the effects of bicarbonate supplementation for people with chronic kidney disease and metabolic acidosis.
Metabolic acidosis is a condition where there is an acid-alkali imbalance in the blood, that results in high blood acidity and low plasma bicarbonate levels. Several conditions can lead to metabolic acidosis, including heart failure, drugs or toxins, kidney failure or diabetic ketoacidosis . It is a common complication in people with advanced chronic kidney disease, and it can interfere with protein metabolism and may lead to stunted growth and loss of bone and muscle.
The study looked at 134 patients with chronic kidney disease and low blood bicarbonate levels . The patients were randomly allocated to either sodium bicarbonate supplements, 600mg taken orally three times a day , or to usual care for two years.
The researchers defined rapid progression as a reduction of creatinine clearance of more than three ml/min per 1.73m2 per year.
