Angioedema Of The Abdomen:

Is lisinopril bad for kidneys?

Many physicians are aware that ACE inhibitors can cause angioedema in the lips, mouth and throat. Lisinopril side effects are not restricted to the upper airways, though. An equally serious c0mplication that often goes misdiagnosed for weeks or months involves angioedema of the abdomen . It too can be life threatening if the bowels become obstructed. Here is one story to help you understand the gravity of this condition:

Monique in Missouri was rushed to the hospital with abdominal angioedema:

Lisinopril Side Effects Can Be Lethal

How do you keep your blood pressure under control? Managing blood pressure is an important pillar for maintaining good health and reducing the risk of strokes or heart disease. Regular exercise, a diet high in healthful vegetables and fruits and ways to relax and manage stress can help. But sometimes people need blood pressure medication to get hypertension into bounds. Lisinopril is one of the most popular prescription pills for hypertension, but what about lisinopril side effects?

Is Lisinopril Bad For Kidneys

Neurons result from a highly complex and unique series of cell divisions. For example, in fruit flies, the process starts with stem cells that divide into mother cells , that then divide into precursor cells that eventually become neurons.

A team of the University of Michigan , spearheaded by Nigel Michki, a graduate student, tegretol rash and Assistant Professor Dawen Cai in the departments of Biophysics and Cell and Developmental Biology at the Medical School, identified many genes that are important in fruit flies neuron development, and that had never been described before in that context.

Since many genes are conserved across species such as between fruit flies , mice, and humans, what is learnt in flies can also serve as a model to better understand other species, including humans. Now that we know which genes are involved in this form of neurogenesis in flies, we can look for them in other species and test for them. We work on a multitude of organisms at U-M and weve the potential to interrogate across organisms, explains Michki. In my opinion, the work we did is one of the many pieces that will inform other work that will inform disease, adds Michki. This is why we do foundational research like this one.

Flies are also commonly used in many different types of research that might benefit from having a more comprehensive list of the fly genes with their associated roles in neuron cell development.

Lisinopril And Birth Defects

Lisinopril and other ACE inhibitors have been associated with an increased risk of birth defects and even death when used by expectant mothers, especially during the second and third trimesters. Some of the specific birth defects associated with lisinopril include:

  • Kidney damage or failure
  • Fetal morbidity and death
  • Inability to pass urine
  • Low blood pressure
  • Death

Because of these problems, the FDA has long required a black box warning for Prinivil, Zestril, and other drugs containing lisinopril.

Lisinopril Black Box Warning

  • When pregnancy is detected, discontinue Zestril as soon as possible.
  • Drugs that act directly on the renin-angiotensin system can cause injury and death to the developing fetus.

A 2006 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed a higher risk of birth defects in both the cardiovascular system and the central nervous system compared to other hypertension drugs — such as valsartan — taken during the first trimester. However, subsequentstudies have been unable to verify those findings. In any case, the black box warning recommends discontinuing taking lisinopril immediately when pregnancy is detected.

Lisinopril Or Ace Inhibitors To Protect Your Kidneys : Diabetes

by LOUF72 T1.5 LADA 2016 Omnipod/Dex G5 6.2% My endo just put me on a small dose of Lisinopril . She said it was to “protect” my kidneys. Me being very reluctant to be on drugs I don’t need, I asked her to give me more info and she explained that non-diabetics typically don’t get high glucose in their blood no matter how much sugar they intake, their pancreas regulates as needed so their bodies don’t see high glucose the way we do when we consume too much sugar . She said that every time we “spike” we are “taxing” our organs in a way that non-diabetics don’t . She described too much glucose in our blood as being like sandpaper to our blood vessels, and the kidneys have very small blood vessels . After she explained this to me, and seeing that once in a while I get glucose readings > 180 , I decided to get on them . She also told me to go to the ER immediately if my tongue or lips swell up. I thought about the little blood vessels in my kidneys again and so far it’s been a week and no need to rush to the ER, yaay! :/ Anyone else taking an ACE inhibitor for reasons stated above?Continue reading > >

Lisinopril Side Effects Can Be Life Threatening:

A lisinopril cough can ruin the quality of your life. It can disrupt sleep and lead to lots of other complications. It is rarely lethal. A far more worrisome lisinopril side effect is called angioedema. It can be life threatening.

A Turkish patient died from angioedema triggered by lisinopril despite emergency treatment .

We received the following message from Gary, a visitor to this website.

One night after taking lisinopril my lips began to swell as if I had a fever blister. Within two hours my face was extremely swollen and my throat began to feel like it was closing off my air passage. I went to the hospital and spent the night in the emergency room with an IV and other meds.

The doctors identified that I had a reaction from the lisinopril. I still had some swelling a full 24 hours after the incident. I was told that I was lucky and that they were close to doing a tracheotomy.

I had taken lisinopril for four years before the reaction. I would strongly advise alternative medications other than lisinopril, and recommend anyone who has been taking this for any length of time have a discussion with their physician.

The final advice I have is that if you have a bad reaction, seek medical attention immediately. Gary

Lisinopril Oral Tablet For High Blood Pressure

Lisinopril is prescribed to treat hypertension in adults and in children ages 6 years and older.

Your heart needs a constant supply of blood and oxygen to work correctly. The nutrients your heart needs are supplied by blood vessels, which can stretch and tighten to accommodate more or less fluid.

When your blood vessels tighten, your blood pressure can increase. A hormone made by your body, called angiotensin II, sends signals telling your blood vessels to tighten. In addition, angiotensin II causes your body to hold on to more water and salt, which also raises your blood pressure.

Lisinopril treats high blood pressure by blocking the action of a protein called angiotensin converting enzyme . By blocking ACE, lisinopril reduces the amount of angiotensin II that your body makes. This can help lower your blood pressure.

Effectiveness for high blood pressure

If you have questions about how well lisinopril may work for you, talk with your doctor.

For more information on how the drug performed in studies, see lisinoprils prescribing information.

According to clinical guidelines, ACE inhibitors such as lisinopril are one of four preferred drug classes for treating high blood pressure in most adults. Your doctor can determine which medication will work best for you based on your needs.

Is Taking Hydrochlorothiazide And Lisinopril Good Or Bad For Kidneys

lipitor, renal failure, hydrochlorothiazide, lisinopril

I have stage 3 kidney failure due to years of untreated high blood pressure and over use of ibuprophen. I take atenolol, lisinopril, hydrochlorothiazide, amlodipine, lipitor and synthroid. I want to know if hydrochlorothiazide, lisinopril and lipitor are good or bad for kidney function?

Cloch

Lisinopril lowers blood pressure and has kidney protective properties which are good. Hydrochlorothiazide works in the kidneys to lower your blood pressure, your kidneys aren’t that bad off to use something else. I say this because when your kidney function decreases to a certain point, hydrochlorothiazide isn’t able to get where it needs to be in order to work. Lipitor is for cholesterol and really doesn’t have anything to do with the kidneys.

Whats Lisinoprils Classification Is It A Beta

Lisinopril is classified as an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor. For more information on ACE inhibitors and how lisinopril works, see the How lisinopril oral tablet works section below.

Depending on the condition its being used to treat, lisinopril may be used with other drugs, including beta-blockers, blood thinners, or diuretics. For more information, see the Lisinopril oral tablet use with other drugs section below. You can also talk with your doctor or pharmacist to learn more.

If You Have Kidney Disease Other Medications Can Be Harmful

If your kidneys are already damaged, certain drugs can make them worse or lead to kidney failure. Talk to your doctor before taking cholesterol or diabetes medication, antacid medicine for an upset stomach, or antimicrobial meds, like antifungal and antiviral drugs. In some cases, you may be able to take a smaller dose that’s safer for you.

You also should talk to your doctor before having some kinds of imaging tests. With a magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography scan, doctors sometimes use a dye to help them see a specific area of your body better. In rare cases, this dye can cause serious conditions called contrast-induced nephropathy or nephrogenic systemic fibrosis . Ask your doctor about other tests you might have instead.

Protecting The Kidneys In People With Diabetes

In people with diabetes, lisinopril helps prevent kidney disease from progressing and reduces the amount of protein that goes unfiltered by the kidneys and ends up in urine . An ACE inhibitor like lisinopril is recommended as first-line treatment for high blood pressure in people with diabetes and in people with microalbumin in their urine.

Grant acknowledged to Medscape Medical News that “There are drawbacks to observational data because we don’t know why were continued or discontinued, and we don’t have as much detail as to what’s happening at the time.”

But nevertheless, the study provides “useful data” in advance of the multicenter randomized controlled trial of ACE inhibitor/ARB withdrawal in advanced renal disease , funded by the UK National Institute for Health Research, which completed enrollment at 20 UK centers in 2018. Published results are expected at the end of December 2022.

The trial enrolled adults who were receiving an ACE inhibitor or ARB and whose renal function had deteriorated to stage 4 CKD. It will randomize 410 patients to discontinue or not discontinue treatment and follow them for 3 years.

However, in the meantime, Grant said, “by looking at usual care in selected patients,” such as those in the current large, real-world, observational study, clinicians “can get some insight into what’s the right thing to do.”

“And even when randomized control trial studies are available,” the editorialists write, “results must be interpreted in the context of the patient sitting in your office.”

“Qiao et al present strong evidence that continuing ACE inhibitor/ARB therapy as tolerated in typical patients with chronic kidney disease with declining kidney function does not lead to harm and is associated with reduced mortality,” they conclude.

Lisinopril And Liver Damage

As a drug class, ACE inhibitors have been associated with rare cases of acute liver injury, specifically cholestatic liver injury. However, lisinopril is different from other ACE inhibitors in two ways:

  • Apparent liver injury is more common with lisinopril than other ACE inhibitors.
  • The type of liver injury lisinopril causes is hepatocellular, rather than cholestatic.

Both types of liver injury are serious, but hepatocellular liver injury involves liver cell death and can ultimately be fatal. According to the drug labels for Prinivil and Zestril, patients who develop jaundice or drug-induced hepatitis should stop taking the drug and seek help from a medical expert right away.

Many of the lawsuits filed against companies that make drugs containing lisinopril have focused on liver damage. Plaintiffs argue that drugmakers like Merck and AstraZeneca should have done more to warn patients about this potential adverse event.
