Abstract

Infection is a major cause of morbidity and mortality at all stages of chronic kidney disease . Multiresistant organisms are becoming increasingly common, particularly in the CKD population. Unfortunately, the rapid evolution of antibiotic resistance has not been mirrored by innovation in new antibiotic agents. Novel treatments are therefore urgently needed. Honey has garnered much interest due to its broad-spectrum antibacterial properties based on extensive experimental data. Unlike conventional antibiotics, honey has an added advantage as it appears to avoid inducing antimicrobial resistance in bacteria. This review discusses the potential mechanisms of action and role of honey in infection management in the general population, epidemiology and special challenges of infections in CKD populations, and the clinical trial evidence pertaining to the safety and efficacy of honey for the prevention and treatment of infections in CKD population.

Foods To Eat Or Avoid If You Have Kidney Disease

Is honey good for kidney stones?

Chronic kidney disease can be either long-term or chronic, but it is possible to live a normal life with the disease. One of the best things you can do to help manage your disease and keep it from progressing is to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

For those with chronic kidney disease, a low-protein diet is recommended, but for someone on dialysis, a high-protein diet is best. Depending on your individual needs, your physician may also recommend limiting additional fluids, minerals or electrolytes. Here are 10 foods to eat or avoid if you have kidney disease:

Foods to Avoid

Kidney disease or not, what you eat and drink affects your health. Maintaining a healthy weight and eating a balanced diet is key to controlling your blood pressure and blood sugar. High blood pressure and diabetes are two of the leading causes of kidney disease, as well as many other conditions including heart disease, heart attacks and stroke.

A kidney-healthy diet isnt so much about eliminating a ton of foods entirely, but more about portion control and finding the right balance of protein, fats and carbohydrates to ensure you are consuming enough calories and nutrients.

Honey has excellent nutritional properties that can help a kidney disease patient. Even though honey is sweet in taste, it does not cause a big spike in blood sugar and can be eaten by a diabetic person in moderation.

The key word there is moderation. Honey is sweeter than sugar and must be consumed in small quantities. Also, many processed honey brands contain added sugars and one needs to be careful.

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of nephropathy . Honey is known to have a positive effect on blood glucose levels and also helps in insulin sensitivity.;

Hence, a person eating honey in his diet will be contributing towards protecting the kidneys from the future occurrence of diabetic kidney disease.

Honey is rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants protect the cells of the kidneys against oxidative stress.;

Eating honey makes sure you get an adequate amount of antioxidants, ultimately playing a protective role in preventing kidney disease.

Since honey is also known for its antibacterial property, it can be used as a natural remedy to prevent kidney infections. Kidney infections are a common occurrence among kidney disease patients.

Is Honey Good For Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are formed through various minerals such as calcium, uric acid, or struvite.A kidney stone might get big enough in size and be unable to pass through the ureter .

A person suffering from a kidney stone might experience immense pain as it blocks the smooth flow of urine to the bladder.

Honey by itself does not possess any benefits for people suffering from kidney stones nor is it harmful.

Since honey is a natural and organic substance, its consumption is safe even for kidney stone patients. However, for a person with diabetic nephropathy, the consumption of honey should be moderated.;

A combination of honey and lemon might be helpful for kidney stone patients as lemon is high in its citrate content that may help the body in dissolving kidney stones and also prevent them.

Hence, consuming honey in combination with lemon might be a healthy natural remedy against kidney stones.

Many of us love reaching for a refreshing, ice cold drink on a hot summer day, or cozying up with a warm beverage during the dead of winter. But, did you know that the drinks you choose to quench your thirst can have a tremendous impact on your kidney health?

As a nephrologist and Kidney Kitchen® contributor, drink-related questions are some of the most common questions I get. Whether you need to watch out for certain nutrients or have fluid restrictions that you need to stick to, there are ways to enjoy healthy drinks for your kidneys. Remember each person with kidney disease should stick to the food and fluid plan you discussed with your doctor and dietitian, as it addresses your specific kidney function, fluid needs and electrolyte imbalances . Here are five of my favorite drinks that are generally healthy for people with kidney disease:

  • Black coffee Every year, there seems to be a new study that publicizes the benefits of coffee. Drinking coffeemy favorite morning beveragemay help protect you from developing kidney disease and keep your kidneys filtering at a higher level for a longer period of time. Unfortunately, not all coffee drinks are healthy, and if you have kidney disease, you may be limited in what you can add to your coffee. Drinking black coffee, instead of coffee with high-potassium and high-phosphorus milk or high-calorie, sugary drinks, will be your best bet.

To determine the protective effects of honey, animals were pretreated for 1 week before cisplatin administration . Kidney function was evaluated by quantifying serum creatinine. Saline treated animals did not show any increase in serum creatinine whereas cisplatin treated animals showed a time dependent increase in serum creatinine suggesting severe kidney injury. Honey feeding largely suppressed serum creatinine rise seen with cisplatin administration suggesting improved kidney function. Interestingly, honey alone fed mice did not show any alteration in serum creatinine level .

    Basics Of Good Nutrition

A healthy eating plan gives you the right amount of:

    • protein
    • vitamins
    • minerals

Your dietitian may ask what you eat and may also ask you to keep a diary of everything you eat each day. This will show if you are eating the right amount of protein, calories, vitamins and minerals. Your dietitian can help you plan meals that give you the right amount of these nutrients each day.

    Protein

Your body needs protein to help build muscle, repair wounds, and fight infection. Now that you have begun dialysis, your diet may include more protein. You get protein from:

    • eggs, egg whites
    • meats
    • poultry
    • fish and other seafood

    Calories

Calories are like fuelthey provide your body with the energy you need to live. They are important because they:

    • help you stay at a healthy body weight.
    • give you energy to do your daily tasks and stay active.
    • help your body use the protein in food to build muscles.

If you are not getting enough calories from your diet, you may need to eat extra sweets like sugar, jam, jelly, hard candy, honey, or syrup; unless you also have diabetes. Other good sources of calories come from fats such as soft margarine, and oils like canola or olive oil.

    Vitamins and Minerals

Kidney disease and dialysis change the amounts of vitamins and minerals your body needs. Also, your kidney diet may limit some food choices that would normally give you important vitamins and minerals. Instead, you may need to take special vitamin or mineral supplements. Be sure to:

Can Lemon Be Bad For Chronic Kidney Disease

In general, drinking lemon water or lemon juice would not worsen the condition of a CKD patient. However, when lemon is consumed in excess it could cause some other health conditions.

    Drinking too much lemon water or lemon juice might cause nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting due to too much vitamin C consumption.;

Lemon water or lemon juice can also act as a diuretic which means it will increase the excretion of fluids in the body resulting in frequent urination.

    Pretzels Chips And Crackers

Ready-to-eat snack foods like pretzels, chips, and crackers tend to be lacking in nutrients and relatively high in salt.

Also, its easy to eat more than the recommended portion size of these foods, often leading to even greater salt intake than intended.

Whats more, if chips are made from potatoes, theyll contain a significant amount of potassium as well.

    SUMMARY

Pretzels, chips, and crackers are easily consumed in large portions and tend to contain high amounts of salt. Additionally, chips made from potatoes provide a considerable amount of potassium.

Cereal In A Kidney Friendly Breakfast

Is honey good for kidney stones?

Cereal can absolutely be a part of a healthy breakfast for people with kidney disease. If done, right cereal can add healthy fiber and help fill you up to start your day!

Any kidney friendly meal must include a fruit or veggie. Eating just cereal for breakfast is not a well-balanced meal. For a healthy low potassium breakfast, enjoy your cereal with some low potassium fruit to add extra fiber, vitamins and minerals!

    Balancing Low Potassium & Fiber

Unfortunately, the lowest potassium cereals also tend to be very low in fiber. Cereals, and other whole grains, are a very important source of fiber in our diet. And, most people are not eating enough fiber!

Eating enough fiber can help constipation, blood sugar, heart health and even prevent cancer.

Because of these, these very low potassium cereals may not be the best choice for people with kidney disease. However, if you have very high blood potassium, these very low potassium cereals might be best. Ask your doctor or dietitian what is best for you.

    How To Purchase Honey

Not all honey is created equal.

In fact, some low-quality brands are often mixed with syrup in an effort to cut costs and maximize profit.

While it may be slightly more expensive, opting for a high-quality brand of raw honey is a simple and effective way to guarantee youre getting the best bang for your buck.

Unlike regular honey, raw versions are not pasteurized, filtered, or processed, allowing them to retain their potential natural health-promoting properties .

Whats more, choosing a raw variety ensures that your honey is free of added syrups or extra ingredients that can diminish possible benefits.

Keep in mind that raw honey should never be given to children under one year of age due to the risk of infant botulism, a serious disease caused by toxins from a specific strain of bacteria called Clostridium botulinum.

After the age of one, the digestive system is typically developed enough to fight off potentially harmful toxins and minimize the risk of disease .

    Summary

Regular honey is often pasteurized, filtered, processed, and mixed with syrup in an effort to cut costs. Selecting raw versions instead is the best way to maximize potential health benefits.

Honey has been linked to health benefits like improved heart health, wound healing, and blood antioxidant status.

However, consuming too much may cause adverse effects due to its high sugar and calorie content.

Thus, its best to use honey to replace other forms of sugar and enjoy it in moderation.

Honey is a good nutrition which not only can provide us abundant vitamin B, but also contain various minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium chlorine, sulphur, iron and phosphate. Honey is beneficial, but for patients with renal failure, they need to pay attention to the intake of it, as high intake of honey will produce effects on kidney condition. Here, we will give an introduction about effects of honey on renal failure.

What are the effects of honey on renal failure?

    1. Eating too much honey will increase kidney failure patients risk for heart problem.

Honey is rich in potassium which is an important mineral for the bodys growth and maintenance. It is essential for a healthy body; however for renal failure patients, as failed kidneys can not discharge excess potassium timely and successfully, they need to pay attention to potassium intake. The normal range of potassium in blood is 3.7 to 5.2 mEq/L. For kidney failure patients, when their potassium level in blood is higher than the normal range, they will be at high risk for heart problems like irregular heartbeat and heart failure.

What Vegetables Can I Use For The Renal Diet

Patients on hemodialysis or those in later stage 4 kidney disease often need to follow a lower potassium diet. If peppers and onions arent your thing, you can change it up with other low potassium vegetables.

For some peritoneal dialysis patients and those patients with earlier stage kidney disease without a potassium restriction you can add some high potassium vegetables without any issue. ;Potassium is primarily an issue at later stages of kidney disease when the kidneys stop being able to filter it out; but early on, a higher potassium diet can actually be helpful with blood pressure. For some patients on peritoneal, home, or nocturnal dialysis, limiting potassium also is not a high priority as they get plenty of filtration from their dialysis. This, of course, is very individual to the patient so if you have questions about potassium restriction you should talk to your dietitian or physician.
