Cranberry juice is full of health-promoting nutrients. In addition to playing a role in cancer prevention and heart health, cranberry juice is particularly beneficial for keeping your kidneys healthy. Not only does cranberry juice help to treat and prevent urinary tract infections via its antibacterial properties, but it also helps prevent the formation of painful kidney stones.

Choose Your Juice Wisely

When youre looking for healthy cranberry juice, its important not to fall for labeling traps. Theres a big difference between cranberry juice cocktail and real cranberry juice.

Juice cocktails contain added sugars like high fructose corn syrup, which isnt good for you. These cocktails are often made with only a small amount of actual cranberry juice.

Look for labels that say made with 100 percent real juice or that list other natural sweeteners like apple or grape juice.

Are Cranberries Safe For Everyone

Its possible to be allergic to cranberries, although this appears to be rare. The berries contain significant amounts of a compound called salicylic acid, which may trigger reactions in sensitive individuals. Those with an aspirin allergy should avoid consuming large amounts of cranberry juice.

Signs of a mild reaction include an itchy mouth or tongue, sneezing or a runny nose. If you experience these symptoms, speak to your GP. If a more serious allergic reaction occurs, call for an ambulance immediately.

Read more from the NHS about allergic reactions.

Cranberries and concentrated cranberry products may contain high amounts of oxalates, which may increase the risk of kidney stones in some predisposed people.

Cranberries and any products that contain them or their juice may interact with certain prescribed medications, including warfarin. If in doubt or you have concerns, refer to your GP for guidance.

Causes And Treatment Of Kidney Failure

Kidney failure, also known as kidney disease or renal failure, can be acute or chronic. According to Medline Plus, it affects more than 2 out of every 1,000 people in the U.S. The most common causes are diabetes and high blood pressure. As kidney function declines, it becomes harder for them to filter wastes from your body. These wastes build up in the blood stream, causing fatigue, headaches, loss of appetite, weight loss and itching. You need a blood test to confirm a diagnosis of kidney failure. Kidney failure is a serious condition, requiring physician supervision. You may also require prescription medicines to treat accompanying conditions such as high blood pressure, and careful monitoring of your diet. While cranberry juice can be a part of your diet, it does not prevent or cure kidney failure.

What Causes Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are formed from substances in your urine. The substances that combine into stones normally pass through your urinary system. When they dont, its because there isnt enough urine volume, causing the substances to become highly concentrated and to crystalize. This is typically a result of not drinking enough water. The stone-forming substances are:

  • Calcium.
  • Cloudy, foul-smelling urine, fever, chills or weakness which might be a sign of a serious infection.
  • Blood in the urine.

Most pediatric kidney stones remain in the kidney, but up to a third may migrate from the kidney and get stuck in a ureter. Stones that remain in the kidney, although often painless, can be the source of recurrent urinary tract infections. Those that lodge in the ureter can create severe colicky pain.

Majority of the kidney stones are formed due to deposition of chemicals in the kidneys that are not passed in the urine. Crystals of these chemicals form and get attached to kidney walls particularly in highly concentrated and acidic urine. Kidney stones are formed of several different types of chemicals including uric acid, struvite and calcium oxalate crystals. Kidney stones may be dissolved and passed in urine by various natural products however, you should consult your physician before consuming any new product.

Cranberry Juice And Kidney Stones

Kidney stones form when there is too much uric acid or calcium in your urine. Most are tiny and are eliminated in your urine, but some are larger and dont easily pass through the urinary tract. If you have one, youll know it. They cause extreme, continuous pain in the lower back or side, nausea or vomiting, fever and chills and possibly blood in your urine. Cranberry contains a compound called an oxalate, which can increase the risk of forming one of the more common types of kidney stone, though it can help dissolve another, less common type. If youre prone to kidney stones, talk to your physician about including cranberry juice in your diet.

Cranberry Juice Fights Urinary Tract Infections Quickly

Study Shows Cranberry Juice Works Against Bacteria Within 8 Hours

Previous studies have suggested that the active compounds in cranberry juice are not destroyed by the digestive system after people drink them, but instead work to fight against bacteria, including E. coli. This latest study, presented at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston, affirms that and provides evidence of the medicinal value of cranberries.

The new research suggests that the beneficial substances in cranberry juice could reach the urinary tract and prevent bacterial adhesion within eight hours.

Researchers from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts grew strains of E. coli in urine collected from healthy people before and after they drank cranberry juice cocktail.

Is Cranberry Juice Good For Your Kidneys

The urinary tract is body’s system for removing waste and excess fluids, and the normal function of the urinary track depends on all of the various parts working together. The process begins in the kidneys where blood is filtered, producing one to two quarts of urine daily. From the kidneys, the urine passes through thin tubes of muscle to the bladder, a hollow, balloon-shaped organ that expands as it fills with urine. The bladder stores the urine until people find an appropriate time and place to urinate. However, problems in the normal function of the urinary track can be affected by urinary tract infections, or UTIs. Some believe that if you consume cranberry juice kidneys will stay healthy and function properly, is that true?

Kidney Stone Prevention: What You Eat And Drink Can Make A Difference

There are no guarantees when it comes to kidney stones. But drinking lots of water, and a little lime or lemon juice, can lower your odds.

Just ask anyone whos had a painful kidney stone: If theres something you can do to avoid getting one, do it.

University of Minnesota Health Clinical Dietitian Angie Moeding, RD, has seen many patients with kidney stones. To avoid becoming one of them, she recommends that most people who have not been diagnosed with a kidney stone consume 64 ounces of fluidequal to about eight glasses of watereach day. If you have ever been diagnosed with a kidney stone, you should drink more fluids and limit your sodium.

Drinking plenty of water can prevent the formation of kidney stones. And it comes with a bevy of other benefits, including better-looking skin, higher energy levels and easier weight control.

That needn’t all be water, of course, but theres nothing quite like water to keep your urine dilutedand dilution helps prevent stones. If you want to vary your fluid intake, Moeding also recommends lemon/lime and orange juices containing citrate, which has been shown to help prevent kidney stone formation.

We recommend half a cup of 100-percent lemon or lime juice daily. Two cups of orange juice will also provide adequate citrate. However, orange juice should be alternated with the lemon or lime juice due to the high sugar content in the orange juice.

What Are The Benefits Of Cranberry Juice And Creatinine For The Kidneys

Fact Checked

According to the National Kidney Foundation, the kidneys are responsible for removing waste products that would otherwise build up within the body, controlling the production of red blood cells and regulating both the body’s fluid pressure and the release of certain hormones 1. Cranberry juice consumption is thought to help promote normal kidney function and to prevent the development of a number of kidney-related health disorders. Creatinine, a waste product produced in the blood from the metabolism of creatine during muscle use, is filtered out by the kidneys and eliminated from the body in urine. Supplementation with creatinine’s precursor, creatine, is thought to not be beneficial for kidney function.

The 5 Best Juices To Cleanse Your Kidneys

Mayo Clinic Minute: Cranberry Juice, Lupus

Believe it or not, kidney problems have become quite common in America. A balanced diet and properly filtered water are necessary for healthy kidneys, and a healthy body for that matter. Most Americans consume foods that can cause toxic build-up in the body, affecting the function of the liver, kidneys, and surrounding organs. Some of these foods even lead to the development of kidney stones.

The kidneys work to filter toxins and waste from the bloodstream. When the kidneys arent functioning properly, common signs can include frequent urinary tract infections, hormonal problems, water retention, back pain, exhaustion, or increased skin problems. While drinking a lot filtered water is a great way to flush out the kidneys, the following juices can greatly aid the cleansing process.

Beet Juice:

This popular detoxifying juice has some amazing kidney cleansing benefits. Containing betaine, which is a powerful phytonutrient, beets and beet juice help to increase acidity in urine and clear calcium phosphate from the kidneys. Getting rid of calcium in the kidneys also helps to decrease your risk of kidney stones.

Watermelon Juice:

Because watermelon is comprised of about 92% water, it helps to naturally clean out the kidneys. Watermelon is also rich in potassium, which works to eliminate sodium from the body, and melt away kidney stones in the process.

What About Cranberry Juice And Kidney Stones

While cranberry juice, in general, is a healthy way to promote bladder and urinary health, drinking a lot can lead to kidney stones in certain people, says Dr. Badani. Kidney stones are small, hard mineral and salt deposits that form in the kidneys and tend to bind together in urine. This may cause nausea and sharp pain in the abdomen as the kidney stones pass through your urinary tract.

Consuming cranberry products may not be a safe home remedy for kidney stones because they contain oxalates. If youre prone to kidney stones, oxalate-containing foods can contribute to their formation. Whats more, cranberry also lowers the pH of your urine. Some stones like to form in acidic urine, while others tend to dissolve more readily in it.

The problem comes in when you overdo cranberry and consume over-the-top amounts, says Dr. Badani. If you are prone to kidney stones as well as UTIs, talk to your doctor before consuming cranberry products.

    1. Fish and SeafoodThese foods are recommended for people with hypothyroidism and advised against those with hyperthyroidism. These contain a sufficient amount of iodine to increase thyroid hormone production, which would be beneficial if you have a hormonal deficit and harmful if you have a hormonal surplus. A good middle-ground is salmon, which is rich in Omega-3 acids and Vitamin D.2. Cruciferous VegetablesRecommended for people with hyperthyroidism and advised against those with hypothyroidism. These are veggies that belong to or are related to the cabbage family. They interfere with thyroid hormone production, causing it to slow down. Examples include broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, and the like.3. Milk and DairyRecommended for people with hypothyroidism and advised against those with hyperthyroidism. Dairy promotes the growth of gut bacteria, effectively increasing the bodys metabolism. Examples of dairy products include cheese, yogurt, etc.

    Soy And Thyroid Health

This is one area that could certainly use more research.

In mice, soy has shown to deactivate an enzyme involved in the production of thyroid hormones. Surprisingly though, this doesnt lead to a decrease in thyroid hormone production or result in hypothyroidism.

Other studies in mice that have shown that a decrease in thyroid hormones with soy intake only occurs when the mice also have an iodine deficiency.

Similar results were shown in old studies of infants receiving soy formula.

These studies initially sparked concern when they showed an increase in the incidence of goiter, which is an enlargement of the thyroid gland.

However, more recent studies show that this only occurs when the infants are also iodine deficient. With supplementation of iodine, the condition is reversed.
