If a stone falls onto the opening where the kidney meets the ureter or passes into the ureter, this can prevent urine from draining out of the kidney. This backing up of urine can lead to back pain just below your ribs. Sometimes the pain can be severe enough to cause nausea and vomiting.
As a stone moves, the blockage of urine may be relieved and symptoms may improve or go away. The pain may return if the stone begins to cause blockage of urine again. This changing of symptoms is called renal colic.
Blood in the urine may be a sign of kidney stones. Sometimes the blood isnt visible to the naked eye and must be detected by a urine test.
If a stone is able to pass down the ureter and close to the bladder, the pain may move to the front of the abdomen, near the pelvis.
Stones very close to the bladder can cause pain that is felt in the genitals. A stone that reaches the bladder can cause burning with urination or changes in how often or how urgently you need to urinate.
How Long Do Kidney Stone Symptoms Last
As mentioned, the time frame for these symptoms can be as short as a week or up to a month and beyond. So, even if it feels like your kidney stone pain has subsided, it’s important to reach out to your doctor since sporadic pain is common with this condition.

Shock Wave Therapy And Percutaneous Nephrolithotripsy For The Treatment Of Kidney Stones
Some small studies have tested shock wave therapy and PCNL. In comparison, PCNL was more successful than shock wave therapy. The following results were observed three months after treatment:
- 44 out of 100 people didnât have any kidney stones after having shock wave therapy.
- 95 out of 100 people didnât have any kidney stones after having PCNL.
But the outcome of shock wave therapy depends on the size, position and composition of the kidney stones: Stones with a diameter of less than 10 millimeters are easier to break up. This is more difficult if the stones are larger or harder. Stones in the lower part of the kidney are also harder to treat with shock wave therapy.
Shock wave therapy carries the risk of leaving behind kidney stone fragments that are too big to pass through the ureter. These fragments might get stuck in the ureter on their way to the bladder. Additional treatment is then needed. To prevent this from happening, a small tube is sometimes temporarily placed in the ureter. The stone fragments can then flow out smoothly.
The shock waves can be painful, so painkillers are given before the treatment. They can also damage the kidney tissue, which may lead to bleeding, for example. But serious complications and long-term damage are rare.
Because only a few small studies have compared these two treatments, there are no exact figures on the likelihood of complications. But shock wave therapy is still considered to be the more gentle treatment.
When Should You Go To The Hospital For Kidney Stones Kidney Stone Surgery Recovery
Certain kidney stone symptoms and changes in symptoms may indicate the need to consult with a primary care provider or visit the emergency room.
You should go to the hospital or seek medical attention for these kidney stone symptoms:
- A sharp pain in the side, back or lower abdomen
- Pain when urinating

- Fever or chills
- Nausea and vomiting
- Experiencing immense pain, becoming unbearable
If you encounter any of these symptoms you should always consult with your physician so that you can be properly diagnosed and the condition of your stone can be understood. How Is The Procedure Performed
The procedure is usually performed with the patient asleep . Sometimes a local anaesthetic, with or without sedation, is administered.
