Drink plenty of water: Drinking extra water dilutes the substances in urine that lead to stones. Strive to drink enough fluids to pass 2 liters of urine a day, which is roughly eight standard 8-ounce cups. It may help to include some citrus beverages, like lemonade and orange juice. The citrate in these beverages helps block stone formation.
Eat calcium rich foods: Dietary calcium binds to oxalate in your intestines and thereby decreases the amount of oxalate that gets absorbed into the bloodstream and then excreted by the kidney. This lowers the concentration of oxalate in the urine, so there is less chance it can bind to urinary calcium. That leads to decreased risk of kidney stones.

Where I Went Wrong
When I examined the changes I had made to my diet in the last three years I could only come up with three changes: I had begun juicing and making smoothies with raw dark leafy greens, I was eating more nuts, nut butters and drinking nut milks, and to add variety to my repertoire I added new vegetables into my daily routine: Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, beets, and kale. Before three years ago I had naturally been eating a low oxalate diet, not on purpose, it just so happened the foods I liked were low in oxalate. BUT everything I had added to my diet in the last three years was super high in oxalate...and of course I was still stubbornly eating chocolate. According to a report in the September 2013 issue of Expert Opinion on Pharmacotherapy, whether or not it’s necessary to restrict high oxalate foods such as spinach in order to reduce urine oxalate levels depends on the reason for the elevated levels. For example, in people with primary hyperoxaluria, a rare and inherited condition, avoiding spinach or other high oxalate foods may not be of benefit. However, when hyperoxaluria is related to increased gut absorption of oxalate, or if considered idiopathic, which is often milder and not related to a medical condition, dietary oxalate restriction can help.
