Chronic Kidney Disease And Diet

Is Beer or Coffee Good For Kidney Stones? Drinks for Kidney Stone Prevention

From 1990 to 2010, the incidence of Chronic Kidney Disease has doubled. In a review of the standard American diet and its effects on the kidney, the diet appears to have negative effects on human renal function. A decline in renal function was observed in those who consumed an animal protein-rich diet, as compared to those consuming a plant protein-rich diet. Consumption of excessive animal proteins leads to a marked acid load to the kidney, and has been associated with the development of kidney stones. Higher meat consumption leads to increased renal acid excretion and the production of ammonia, which can cause metabolic acidosis and a higher risk for tubulointerstitial injury. In addition to eliminating meat, it is beneficial to add dietary fiber. In a meta-analysis of 14 trials involving 143 participants, the additional dietary fiber significantly reduced serum urea and creatinine levels.

Consumption of animal products impairs renal vascular function, leading to increased inflammation and subsequent microalbuminuria. Studies show that meat ingestion impacts factors such as GFR, glucagon, prostaglandins, and increased albuminuric response. Glomerular hyperfiltration is thought to be due to an inflammatory response via vasodilatory prostaglandins, as a result of animal protein consumption. This is supported by studies showing that the level of hyperfiltration decreases when indomethacin is administered.

Whats The Best Juices For Kidney Stones

The balance of salts, minerals, and fluids in our body is regulated in the kidney. However, there are many instances when the masses of salts and minerals become concentrated. It then starts to form a crystal-like stone known as the kidney stones that could be as small as speck but can quickly become quite large. It is accompanied by pain in urination and onset pain on lower back and abdomen.

The real discomfort comes when stones start to clog the urinary tract it could lead to complications and infection in urinary. At this point, one may experience blood in the urine, fever, chills, vomiting, and nausea. In some cases, surgery is required especially if the stones become large.

Genetic predisposition and certain medical conditions can trigger kidney stones. A diet high in protein, sodium, and sugar also imposed a risk on the amount of calcium your kidneys can filter that could progress in the development of calcium stones in the kidney. However, the biggest factor that contributes to the development of kidney stones is dehydration. Lack of fluid in the body allows minerals to crystallize and stick, forming a kidney stone. Where Do Kidney Stones Come From

Kidney stones form develop when certain substances, such as calcium, oxalate, and uric acid, become concentrated enough to form crystals in your kidneys. The crystals grow larger into stones. About 80% to 85% of kidney stones are made of calcium. The rest are uric acid stones, which form in people with low urine pH levels.

After stones form in the kidneys, they can dislodge and pass down the ureter, blocking the flow of urine. The result is periods of severe pain, including flank pain , sometimes with blood in the urine, nausea, and vomiting. As the stones pass down the ureter toward the bladder, they may cause frequent urination, bladder pressure, or pain in the groin.

If you experience any of these symptoms, see your primary care physician, says Dr. Eisner. He or she will likely perform a urinalysis and a renal ultrasound, abdominal x-ray, or CT scan to confirm kidney stones are the source of your pain and determine their size and number.

Nutrition Facts Of Coffee

While a cup of coffee provides no carbohydrates, fats, or protein, it does provide other nutrients. An 8-oz cup of black coffee will give you

  • 8 ounces of fluid

  • 116 milligrams of potassium

Potassium In Coffee May Prevent Kidney Stones

Coffee decreases the risk for kidney stones

Coffee and tea are beverages pretty high in potassium. Along with milk and potatoes are the main sources of potassium in the diet of US adults. 1 cup of coffee contains 116 mg of potassium. 1 cup of tea contains 88 mg!

Potassium is a key compound against the forming of kidney stones. Low potassium levels impair calcium reabsorption within the kidneys. So, urinary calcium excretion is increased, causing higher risk of kidney stones!

In a study of over 45,000 men, those who consumed the most potassium had 51% lower risk of forming kidney stones. Moreover, in another study of over 90,000 women, those who consumed about 4,100 mg of potassium a day had 35% lower risk of kidney stones.

Therefore, it seems beneficial to consume lots of foods high in potassium daily. Many fruits, nuts, and seeds are good sources.

What Are Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are solid crystals formed from the salts in urine. They are sometimes called renal calculi. Kidney stones can block the flow of urine and cause infection, kidney damage or even kidney failure. They can vary in size and location.

The risk of kidney stones is about one in 10 for men and one in 35 for women. Between four and eight per cent of the Australian population suffer from kidney stones at any time.

After having one kidney stone, the chance of getting a second stone is between five and 10 per cent each year. Thirty to fifty per cent of people with a first kidney stone will get a second stone within five years. After five years, the risk declines. However, some people keep getting stones their whole lives.

Hypertension And High Blood Pressure

Drinking coffee causes a sudden increase in blood pressure. So, people who experience hypertension can experience a more prominent increase in blood pressure levels. People who have hypertension and drink more than 2 cups seem to experience more fluctuation in their health. As a result of increased blood pressure, the risk for kidney diseases and renal failure also increases.

Home Remedies That May Help With Kidney Stones

After discussing Does cranberry juice help kidney stones? lets discuss other home remedies for kidney stones.

1. Water

When you are passing a kidney stone, you should increase your intake of water as it helps in speeding up the process. Aim to drink 12 glasses of water daily. After the stone has passed, continue drinking 12 glasses every day. Dehydration is among the most important risk factors of kidney stones. You should keep a check on your urine color. It must be pale yellow or very light in color. Dark yellow colored urine shows dehydration.

2. Lemon Juice

You may add fresh lemon juice to the water you drink. Lemon juice is rich in citrate, a chemical, which prevents the formation of calcium stones. Citrate also helps in breaking off small stones and making their passage easy. There are other benefits of lemon juice. For instance, it inhibits the growth of bacteria.

3. Basil Juice

Basil has acetic acid that helps in breaking off kidney stones and reducing pain. It also reduces levels of uric acid thereby, lowering the risk of uric acid stones. Use dried or fresh leaves of basil to prepare basil tea and drink it several times a day. You can also make juice of basil leaves or add them to smoothie.

Basil juice should not be used for greater than 6 weeks at a stretch as it may result in:

Kidney Stones And Plant

Is Coffee Good For Your Kidneys

Approximately ten percent of urinary stones are formed from uric acid. The most common risk factors associated with urinary stones are high uric acid excretion, low urine volume and acidic urinary pH values. Diets that help reduce these factors may lower the incidence of urinary stones and uric acid crystallization. An investigation of 10 healthy male subjects ingesting a high meat-containing diet for 2 weeks, followed by three different standardized diets for 5 days each . This study suggested that the western diets may lead to the highest risk of urinary stone formation. Although the omnivorous diet displayed a significant decrease in uric acid excretion this was reduced even further in the ovo-lacto-vegetarian diet. Therefore, a vegetarian diet may help reduce the risk of urinary stones due to a higher alkali load with fruits and vegetables alkalizing urinary pH and lowering uric acid concentration.

The kidneys are responsible for filtering harmful substances like alcohol. Alcohol contains a high purine content, a chemical which leads to uric acid and kidney stones. When you drink too much alcohol, the functionality of your kidneys is compromised, and they are not able to flush out the purine. It then gets accumulated in the kidneys, eventually resulting in a kidney stone.

Should You Consume Beer To Pass Kidney Stones

SHOULD YOU CONSUME BEER TO PASS KIDNEY STONES? | MYTHS vs FACTS

  • Beer is a diuretic, produces lots of urine, so may help in passage of small stones less than 5 mm .
  • Since it produces lots of urine suddenly, dont even try if you not able to pass urine or in pain, it will make it more miserable for you. If kidney is already blocked with stone and lots of urine is produced in the kidney, which it is not able to expel out, it becomes very painful and you may end up vomiting, unable to pass urine and of course groggy if you never had alcohol before!
  • Prolonged beer intake will make you dehydrated, oxalate loaded and overweight :
  • Medicines are available which do the same job of flushing out small stones and are of course much cheaper and safer than beer!
  • Beer is an alcohol after all, and does harm your liver! Too much price to pay for flushing out a stone!
  • If a stone stuck in the ureter has to pass, it will, in a span of a month. If it doesnt, in spite of whatever you tried, get it removed. Many people end up with a damaged kidney because of this totally preventable and treatable reason!
