How Did It Begin
This all began when Fionas grandmother was diagnosed with stage-4 renal disease. They looked for another solution rather than having her go through dialysis. After studying several peer-reviewed journals and other medical literature, they jumped to medical trials. Fionas grandma went through this organic program. Her condition improved significantly in just 12 weeks of treatment.
Within six months during her treatment, she transferred from stage-4 to stage-1. Fionas grandma lived on for ten more years before dying of heart failure in 2017.

Type II Diabetes is not only an increasingly prevalent condition among United States citizens, but also among the veterans who served during the Vietnam Era. In its Special 2000 Update, the Institute of Medicine officially recognized Diabetes Mellitus II as a health effect of exposure to the chemical Agent Orange, and established it as a presumptively service-connected condition under the qualifying circumstances.
As any diabetic can tell you, diabetes is not an isolated disease. It affects the rest of the body in a number of damaging ways. One of these is kidney disease. According to the American Heart Association, renal disease is a common, often severe complication of diabetes. Likewise, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases , diabetes is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease and kidney failure in the US, accounting for nearly 44% of new cases of kidney failure.
Applying For Disability Benefits
If you are now ready to apply for benefits, there are several different ways you can start the process. You can either visit your local SSA office and sit down to talk one-on-one with an employee who will help you step by step with the initial paperwork or you can to talk with a representative over the phone and get the process underway. You can also visit the SSA website to start the application process.
The disability claims process can be time consuming and complicated. It can take months to be approved for benefits. You may find it beneficial to work with an advocate or an attorney, which can significantly improve your odds of being approved for benefits.

Other Ways To Qualify
The specific conditions listed in Section 6.00 are common genitourinary disorders that may be severe enough to prevent you from working, but they are not the only genitourinary disorders that may prevent you from working. If you have a different kidney disorder that does not meet the specific criteria of this section, you may still be eligible for benefits if:
- You are eligible pursuant to a different listing in the Listing of Impairments.
- Your condition is medically equivalent to another listing in the Listing of Impairments.
- You lack the residual functional capacity to engage in substantial gainful activity.
Only one of these three things must be true in order for you to be found eligible for Social Security disability benefits.
Applying For Social Security Disability With Kidney Disease
If you are applying for SSDI benefits, you can apply online on the SSA website, by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or at your local Social Security office. If you are applying for SSI benefits, you may start the application online, but must complete the application in person at an SSA office. The SSA has an office locator to help you find your nearest office. There are at least four SSA offices in every state.
Maintaining detailed records that illustrate the severity of your kidney disease will increase your chances of getting approved for benefits. The SSA will need copies of all of your lab reports, test results, treatment summaries and outcomes, and descriptions of surgeries. You may also have to have an estimated glomerular filtration rate test and a kidney or bone biopsy. Each doctor who treats you should provide a note that describes your condition, your symptoms and your limitations.
If your initial claim is denied, you may appeal the decision online or at your local SSA office, or even in court. Most denials result from lack of medical evidence or a technical error while applying. Take your time carefully completing your initial application to improve your chances for a speedy approval.

Getting Ssi For Children’s Kidney Disease
In order to be eligible for SSI , children must meet Social Security’s definition of disability, and their parents must have limited income and resources. To learn more about the household income and resource limits, see our article on qualifying financially for SSI as a child.
Once the income and asset requirements are met, the child must meet Social Security’s definition of disabled. There are two ways that Social Security can determine that your child is disabled. Your child’s kidney disease can be severe enough that it meets the requirements set forth in Social Security’s Listing of Impairments, which lays out the medical conditions that Social Security considers severe enough to be automatically disabling. If those medical requirements are not met, a child can still be found disabled if he or she has significant functional limitations arising from the kidney disease.
Fighting For Dialysis Patients Wrongfully Denied Long
Did you know that one in six Americans has chronic kidney disease ? Thats almost one person per American family. CKD causes a reduction in kidney function that can worsen with time, preventing your body from filtering out the toxic waste naturally produced by your cells. CKD eventually leads to end-stage renal disease , or kidney failure.
Youll require dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive once you enter into ESRD. This is a significant and debilitating disease that may immediately qualify you for private and federal long-term disability benefits. You may even require individual or group long-term disability benefits after a kidney transplant as you adjust to immunosuppressant medications and ensure your body accepts the foreign kidney. Dialysis itself typically takes about four hours, and most patients need it at least three times per week. This dialysis time doesnt include travel time to and from the dialysis center and any time it may take to recover from the procedure. Essentially, most dialysis patients are rendered completely unable to perform the important duties of their occupations. The situation doesnt get better without a kidney transplant, as modern medicine cannot account for the extraordinary design and function of the kidneys.

How Do I Get Disability Benefits For Kidney Failure
For people with end-stage kidney failure, Social Security may be available. Individuals may qualify for automatic approval of these benefits if they have been formally diagnosed with end-stage, including those waiting for a kidney transplant and those requiring dialysis. All individuals must meet the requirements listed under Genitourinary disorders from the Social Security Administration, listed in the Blue Book of qualifying medical conditions. These qualifications can be hard to understand, though.
What Is Polycystic Kidney Disease
Polycystic kidney disease is a form of chronic kidney disease. With this inherited medical condition, fluid-filled cysts grow in your kidneys. These cysts are different than simple kidney cysts.
Over time, PKD can change the shape of your kidneys and make it harder for them to function normally. About 500,000 people live with polycystic kidney disease in the United States, making it one of the most common genetic disorders.

Showing Functional Limitations That Equal The Listing
As mentioned above, if the listing requirements are not met, Social Security may still find that your child is disabled if your child has significant functional limitations due the kidney disease. To be eligible for SSI by “functionally equaling” the listings, you must be able to show that your child has “marked” limitations in two out of six areas of functioning or an extreme limitation in one area of functioning. A marked limitation means that your child’s ability to independently initiate, sustain, or complete activities is seriously limited. An extreme limitation means that your child’s abilities are very seriously limited.
The areas of functioning are:
- acquiring and using information
- attending to and completing tasks
- interacting with and relating to others
- moving about and manipulating objects
- caring for personal needs, and
- health and physical wellbeing.
Because kidney disease can cause learning delays and concentration difficulties, you may be able to prove limitations in the first two domains of functioning: acquiring and using information and attending to and completing tasks. School records and teacher reports, in addition to medical records, would be helpful evidence to support these limitations.

Individual Or Group Long

Getting A Diagnosis: Testing For Kidney Disease
If the presence of kidney problems is suspected, the physician will most likely start out with a simple urine test. A dipstick is used to measure how much protein is present in the sample. If there is more than 30mg of albumin, kidney disease has most likely set in, and further testing is done to determine how far the disease has advanced.
Further testingespecially if the individual is diabeticincludes blood tests that measure the kidneys ability to filter the blood. The test results record blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine levels in the blood sample. High levels of either indicate that the kidneys are unable to properly filter the wastes in the blood. Creatinine is a byproduct of the muscles metabolism of energy. BUN is a waste product formed in the liver when protein is metabolized into its component parts . BUN is released by the liver and carried to the kidneys, where it is filtered out of the bloodstream.
Blood tests may also include the glomerular filtration rate , which the physician can calculate based on the creatinine test, age, body size, ethnicity and gender. Specifically, it estimates how much blood passes through the glomeruli each minute. If the GFR is low, the kidneys are not working as well as they should. The various stages of kidney disease are based on the GFR of the individual.

Being on dialysis and not feeling well while trying to remain gainfully employed can be challenging. As an attorney with civil litigation cases, I could have court hearings, trials, or other matters scheduled which would be extremely difficult to cover while spending three days a week on hemodialysis. When I went on dialysis, I researched my options as far as disability payments and tried to find what was best. Heres what Ive learned:
People who have Chronic Kidney Disease may qualify for Social Security Disability . Those with CKD who are on dialysis may automatically qualify.
SSD pays disability benefits to those who cant work because they have a medical condition thats expected to last at least one year or to result in death. To qualify, one must have worked long enough in jobs covered by Social Security, and have a medical condition that meets Social Securitys definition of disability. As for the first qualification, generally you need 40 credits, with 20 earned in the last 10 years. With a maximum of four credits being earned a year in a full time job, this means one must have worked for 20 years total, with 20 of the credits coming in the last 10 years. As for the second qualification, the disability must be total , and must be expected to last at least one year or result in death.
Social Security has five questions to determine whether one is totally disabled. Answers to the first three often determine eligibility:

Evidence Required If You Qualify Pursuant To Section 600
The Social Security Administration requires the following evidence to determine whether a person qualifies for disability benefits pursuant to Section 6.00:
- Reports from clinical examinations
- Treatment records, including information about your response to treatment
- Lab findings, such as serum creatinine or serum albumin levels
- Estimated glomerular filtration rate . This is an estimate of your kidneys filtering capacity.
- Kidney or bone biopsy. If you have had a kidney or bone biopsy done, a copy of the pathology report or a statement from your doctor should be submitted with your disability application.
Generally, evidence is needed for a period that covers at least 90 days.

Renal Failure Symptoms And Complications

There is also the risk of the lining of your heart becoming inflamed, which typically leads to chest pain. Some patients feel weakness in their muscles because the bodys fluids are out of balance. In severe cases, renal failure can lead to permanent kidney damage or even death.
