Within 30 Days Of Your Surgery
Presurgical Testing
Before your surgery, youll have an appointment for presurgical testing . The date, time, and location will be printed on the appointment reminder from your surgeons office. Its helpful to bring the following things to your PST appointment:
- A list of all the medications youre taking, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, patches, and creams.
- Results of any tests done outside of MSK, such as a cardiac stress test, echocardiogram, or carotid doppler study.
- The name and telephone number of your healthcare provider.
You can eat and take your usual medications the day of your appointment.
During your PST appointment, youll meet with a nurse practitioner . They work closely with anesthesiology staff . Your NP will review your medical and surgical history with you. You may have tests, such as an electrocardiogram to check your heart rhythm, a chest x-ray, blood tests, and any other tests needed to plan your care. Your NP may also recommend that you see other healthcare providers.
Your NP will talk with you about which medications you should take the morning of your surgery.
Identify your caregiver
Your caregiver plays an important role in your care. Before your surgery, you and your caregiver will learn about your surgery from your healthcare providers. After your surgery, your caregiver will take you home when youre discharged from the hospital. Theyll also help you care for yourself at home.

What Addition Information Should Women Know About The Recovery Process
Although fertility is not a problem, rejection or high blood pressure are both complications a woman might experience for at least one year after transplant surgery. Therefore, it is important to prevent a pregnancy during this time by using birth control.
Women who have a kidney transplant can have a healthy pregnancy later. Talk to the Transplant Team about the timing of your pregnancy after your transplant. Also, know the risks and make sure your obstetric provider is experienced in dealing with transplant patients.
A female transplant patient who becomes a new mother should not breastfeed her baby. The immunosuppressive medicines prescribed after transplantation can be passed through the mothers breast milk and can cause harm to the baby.
Female transplant patients should be sure to have a yearly Pap test and a mammogram. Immunosuppressive medicines could cause increased susceptibility to various types of cancer. Pap tests and mammograms are preventive measures that can help your healthcare providers detect any problems.

Alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis are associated with hypotension and vasodilation, which can overcome renal blood flow autoregulation, and these patients are prone to acute kidney injury and tubular necrosis . In patients with cirrhosis, the spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and sepsis always further aggravate the inflammation in the body bacterial endotoxins and cytokines, such as TNF- and IL-6, are closely related to acute/chronic kidney injury and albuminuria . Moreover, alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis patients are susceptible to renal dysfunction caused by nephrotoxic drugs .
Therefore, the effect of ethanol on the kidney is beyond our original understanding. Alcohol can not only directly damage the kidney, but also causes renal dysfunction by damaging other organs. In addition, some studies proved that alcohol consumption aggravates kidney injury in diabetic nephropathy rats . Hepatorenal syndrome, which is secondary to alcoholic hepatitis , and acute kidney injury, secondary to rhabdomyolysis, also cannot be ignored .

Is It Better For A Friend Or Loved One To Donate Rather Than A Stranger
Its not necessarily better, but sometimes its easier. Many of us would love to help a family member in need by donating a kidney. But we often see older adults who refuse to take a kidney from their willing son, daughter, or spouse. Theyd rather wait on the transplant list than put their family member at perceived risk.
Unfortunately, people often have to wait several years on the transplant list to get a kidney. Every year, 4,500 people die while on the kidney transplant waiting list, according to data from the Living Kidney Donor Network. One bad infection while a patient is on dialysis can cause an illness from which he or she wont recover.
Living kidney donation is an incredibly selective and safe process. Fewer than 4 percent of living donors from 2006 to 2008 experienced complications that required medical intervention or hospital admission six weeks after donating.
We simply dont allow people to donate their kidneys if we think their future health will be at risk, even if the recipient is someone they really love. In fact we do not meet the potential recipients to keep the entire evaluation process entirely separate from him or her. This is to avoid any conflict of interest which could impact the decision on the donor eligibility. My No. 1 focus in my role on our transplant nephrology team is the safety of the donor. We determine who can safely donate through our rigorous application process.

Compared to the group of persistent non-drinkers, persistent drinkers, de novo drinkers, and KTRs who stopped drinking were not significantly associated with the development of PTDM . Figure 3 shows the results of the general linear model for the relationships between alcohol consumption over time and total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and TGs after adjusting for the use of lipid-lowering agents, age, sex, and BMI. 5 years after transplant, there were significant differences between the groups in total cholesterol levels and LDL cholesterol levels . In particular, the total cholesterol levels and LDL cholesterol levels were significantly higher in de novo drinkers than in persistent non-drinkers. 7 years after transplant, there was a significant difference between the groups in total cholesterol levels . In particular, the total cholesterol levels were significantly higher in de novo drinkers than in the group that stopped drinking .

You should see your surgeon if you have any of the following signs or symptoms:
- Pain or soreness at or around the incision for more than two months.
- Shortness of breath, isolated leg swelling, or difficulty breathing

After returning home, you want to resume normal living. If you want to go to a movie or a social occasion and feel up to it, DO IT! If youd like to have friends visit you at home, thats OK too! Try as much as possible to return to your normal routine.
However, the key is moderation and understanding your limits. Initially, you will probably have less energy than you did before surgery. It takes time for your body to heal and adjust to your new medications. Napping and pacing your activities is recommended to prevent placing a strain on your recovery.
Please note that many of these recommendations specifically apply to patients taking prednisone. Today, the vast majority of our transplant patients do not require prednisone and other steroids long-term.

Can Liver Transplant Patients Drink Alcohol
Depending on the reason for the transplant, you may be able to consume alcohol after the procedure. If alcohol abuse caused your liver problem in the past, you should not consume alcohol again.
Alcohol use following liver transplant is distinct from liver disease etiology, alcohol and alcoholism, volume 6, page 698-701, November 2016. Assess the alcohol use of liver transplant recipients after liver transplantation and compare recipients for alcoholic liver disease and non-ALD recipients. ALD is a common indication of liver transplant , and it is a leading cause of death in the United States. A minimum of 6 months of abstinence is usually required before a transplant center will evaluate for LT. Alcohol is used by approximately 10% of transplant recipients for ALD after LT. The use of alcoholic beverages in the following year by transplant patients for causes other than alcohol is sparse. Alcohol use in prior to a transplant as a primary diagnosis was reported in 109 of 129 transplants with ALD as a primary diagnosis.
