Causes Urinary Tract Infections

Kidney Stones in Children and Adolescents

Although holding your pee doesnt directly cause a urinary tract infection , not emptying your bladder can allow bacteria to multiply within the bladder. This is because passing urine helps to flush out the bladder and the rest of your urinary tract.

This is also true if you dont drink enough water since you wont have enough liquid in your system to passthis also gives bacteria the opportunity to multiply and cause an infection.

Bladder Burst And Urinary Retention

In very rare situations, an individual might even hold their pee for a very long period of time that when it is finally time to go urinate, they are not able to do it. This can result in a burst bladder. If your bladder bursts, you have to rush to the emergency room and seek medical attention immediately. If you are not peeing regularly and are trying to control, it can also lead to urinary retention.

Types Of Kidney Stones

There are four types of kidney stones. These include:

  • Calcium stones. These are the most common type of kidney stones. Certain diets or metabolic conditions or medications may contribute to an increase in calcium in urine.

  • Struvite stones. These types of stones form in response to an infection, like a bladder infection. Although rare, these stones can be more common in people prone to getting urinary tract infections.

  • Uric acid stones. These happen to people who drink too little fluids or who eat a high protein diet. Certain conditions can also lead to uric acid stones, such as type 2 diabetes, or gout.

  • Cystine stones. A hereditary condition causing the kidneys to produce too much of certain amino acids.

What Are Kidney Stones

What causes kidney stones? – Arash Shadman

The kidneys are part of your urinary tract system. Their job is to control the fluid and chemical levels in the body by cleaning the blood, then creating urine from the waste and the excess fluid in the body. Sometimes, the urine in your body contains a high level of minerals and salts that form hard deposits inside of your kidneys. These are kidney stones. Kidney stones may start out small, but can grow quite large in some cases.

Kidney stones sometimes dont have any symptoms, and remain inside the kidneys without issue. Or, they may travel through the urinary tract to the bladder, where they exit the body through urine. Passing a kidney stone can sometimes take several weeks and may be quite painful. If the stone is too large, it may become lodged in the urinary tract, creating even more problems.

Searching For The Evidence: Literature Search Strategies For Identification Of Relevant Studies To Answer The Key Questions

Holding Urine For A Long Time Can Be A Cause Of Kidney Stones Others ...

We will utilize bibliographic database searching to identify previous systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, and observational studies published from 1946 to the present for studies enrolling adults based on a diagnosis of CUR. Relevant bibliographic databases for this topic include MEDLINE® and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials . Our preliminary search strategy appears in Appendix A. This search strategy searches on only one concept, CUR, and employs relevant Medical Subject Headings and natural language terms to find studies on the topic. The concept search is supplemented with filters designed to select experimental designs. Bibliographic database searches will be supplemented with backward citation searches of highly relevant systematic reviews. We will update searches while the draft report is under public/peer review.

We will conduct additional grey literature searching to identify relevant completed and ongoing studies. Relevant grey literature resources include trial registries and U.S. Food and Drug Administration databases. We will search ClinicalTrials.gov and the International Controlled Trials Registry Platform . We will also review Scientific Information Packets sent by manufacturers of relevant interventions. Grey literature search results will be used to identify studies, outcomes, and analyses not reported in the published literature to assess publication and reporting bias.

Holding Your Pee Can Cause Kidney Stones

People who are prone to kidney stones and who, for whatever reason, are prone to holding their pee, should take note. The consequences of kidney stones can be very serious.

Kidney stones are tiny stones that form in the kidneys as a result of excess sodium or calcium. Consequently, if these mineral deposits are not regularly expelled via the urine the stones will try to leave the body via the urinary tract. The resulting pain can be unbearable.

Causes Of Kidney Stones

Possible causes include drinking too little water, exercise , obesity, weight loss surgery, or eating food with too much salt or sugar. Infections and family history might be important in some people. Eating too much fructose correlates with increasing risk of developing a kidney stone. Fructose can be found in table sugar and high fructose corn syrup.

Neurogenic Bladder Treatment And Home Remedies

Kidney Stones – Types and Causes of Kidney Stones. Symptoms and prevention

Your care will depend on whatâs causing your symptoms and how serious they are. Thereâs no cure for neurogenic bladder, but you can manage your symptoms and get control.

If you have OAB, you may need to:

  • Train your bladder. You can do this by squeezing your pelvic floor muscles during the day or when you need to pee .
  • Hold it, if you can. Delayed voiding is when you wait a few minutes to urinate after you feel the urge. The goal is to extend this time to a few hours.
  • Pee on a schedule. You might avoid accidents if you urinate at certain times of the day.
  • Take medicine. Some medications can relax bladder muscles and stop spasms.
  • Keep a healthy weight. Extra body mass can add pressure to your bladder.
  • Change your diet. Things like caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, dairy, artificial sweeteners, chocolate, and citrus fruit can irritate your system.
  • Use electrical stimulation. A device under your skin sends electricity to the nerve that controls your bladder. These painless pulses help stop overactive signals that tell your brain to pee.
  • Get Botox. Your doctor can inject this neurotoxin into your bladder to temporarily stop it from contracting too much. If you have problems emptying your bladder or have urinary tract infections often, this treatment isnt an option.

How Do You Prevent Kidney Stones

Some people are more prone to develop kidney stones, based on heredity or their own history of stones. People who have had kidney stones in the past are more likely to develop another in the future.

However, there are some things that you can do to help prevent those hard mineral deposits from forming in the first place.

  • Stay Hydrated. Ensure youre drinking enough water to stay hydrated. By maintain a good amount of fluid in the body, the kidney is better able to filter calcium, making it less likely that a build up will occur.

  • Watch Your Diet. If you suffer from frequent kidney stones, avoid high protein diets, and reduce your sugar, and especially your salt consumption. Watch your calcium intake too to ensure youre not overdoing it .

  • Reduce Your Weight. Losing weight can reduce your risk for kidney stones. This is in part because reducing your weight may lead to a healthier diet, with less salty food or animal fats. Incorporate lots of fruits and vegetables into your diet and practice regular exercise to reduce the weight.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, make an appointment with your doctor to get it checked out.

Telltale Signs You Have A Kidney Stone

Most people have two kidneys located behind their abdominal organs along the middle of their back. The purpose of your kidneys is to filter blood and send any waste thats collected into your urine.

Sometimes, these waste products build up and form small, hard deposits called kidney stones. Stones develop inside kidneys, but they exit the body through the urinary tract.

Because the ureter is small, passing a stone can cause complications inside the urinary tract, as well as a range of unpleasant symptoms from abdominal pain to nausea. About 1 in 10 Americans will experience at least one kidney stone in their lifetime, but learning to recognize the telltale signs of a kidney stone isnt always easy especially if youve never had one.

Our team at Advanced Urology in Redondo Beach, Culver City, and Los Angeles, California, is here to help. While small stones might pass without your knowledge, larger stones can cause excruciating pain. Make an appointment at Advanced Urology if you have

Mistake : Going Too Often

One more trip to the bathroom before rushing out the door may seem like smart planning, but it can backfire. The danger is that you can end up training the bladder to respond to small volumes, which can lead to overactive bladder symptomsthe sensation of needing to urinate more frequently than is normal, explains Dr. Rickey.

Going too often at night can also be a problem for men who then cant fall back to sleep, says Stanton Honig, MD, director of Male Urology, adding that this condition, called nocturia, can affect quality of life. If this is bothersome to patients, there are treatment for it, says Dr. Honig.

Other problems can also cause increased urinary frequency, such as an infection along the urinary tract. Therefore, if you find that you need to visit the bathroom far more often than you used to, talk to your primary care physician or urologist. You may need a urinalysis to rule out a UTI, as well as to check for blood in the urine , which can happen to a small number of people with an overactive bladder who have a bladder tumor, Dr. Brito says. Blood in the urine is never normal and usually requires further testing to determine its cause, Dr. Brito says.

Renal System Dysfunction Caused By Lyme Disease

Kidney Stone Symptoms, Causes and Natural Remedies

The renal system is a vital part of the overall functioning of the body. Without the ability to filter the blood, it can lead to the aforementioned symptoms and conditions.

The damage done to the renal system following a Lyme disease infection can:

  • Cause the kidney filtration system to cease functioning, or function at a lower level.
  • Aid in the formation of lesions on the kidneys.
  • Cause the build-up of waste in the bloodstream.
  • Lead to the leakage of proteins and red blood cells out of the system.
  • Eventually cause kidney disease or kidney failure.

How Long Is Too Long

If holding it is an infrequent, once-every-good-movie type of thing, theres no real risk, Shteynshlyuger says. The danger lies in making a habit: when youre keeping it in a few hours past when you feel you need to go, for years at a timethe extreme sports version of bladder holding, as he calls it.

So whats the risk? In those long-term cases, the elastic tissue can become damaged and eventually replaced by scar tissue, Ulchaker says. And while not irreparable, that opens you up to further complications like urinary retention, kidney damage, and increased risk of urinary tract infections. But again, thats only in extreme, repeated cases, not your average one-off long car ride.

Peeing anywhere between four and ten times a day is normal, but if you feel like youre practically living in the bathroom, there are a few things you can do. For one, try drinking less alcohol. Its a diuretic , so even if you go right before leaving the bar, it can still come back to haunt you.

Likewise, avoid the sound of rushing water. No one knows for sure why it has such a triggering effect, Ulchaker says, but Shteynshlyuger says it probably has something to do with a reflex between your brain, spinal chord, and bladdera hear the sound, do the thing kind of situation.
