How Dermatologists Help Patients With Kidney Disease

How To Remove Leg Swelling in Kidney Failure

Kidney doctors, called nephrologists, often care for patients with kidney disease. When a kidney disease affects the skin, a nephrologist may team up with a dermatologist. Some skin conditions that develop due to kidney disease can be difficult to control. For example, if a patient has extremely itchy skin, it may be impossible to sleep through the night. A board-certified dermatologist can help a patient get some relief. This may involve using the right balance of moisturizers and medication that you apply to the skin. Some patients get relief with a treatment called UVB phototherapy.

The right skin care may also help. If the kidney disease is causing extremely dry skin, these tips from dermatologists may help:

Preparing For An Appointment

For end-stage renal disease, you’ll likely continue to see the same doctor and care team you’ve been seeing for treatment of chronic kidney disease. If you’re not already being cared for by a nephrologist â a doctor who specializes in kidney problems â you may be referred to one as your disease progresses.

What Medical Conditions Cause Symptoms Of Swollen Feet And Ankles

Occasionally, specific medical problems will show additional or relatively unique symptoms, for example:

  • Symptoms of gout include swelling of the big toe with redness, warmth and pain, arthritis with swelling and joint pain, or electrolyte imbalance with low magnesium causing foot and leg cramps.
  • Sudden appearance of bilateral feet and ankle swelling during pregnancy can be the first symptoms noticed in females with preeclampsia.
  • Unilateral swelling of the foot or ankle usually has the same symptoms described above if the underlying cause is unilateral lymphedema, venous insufficiency or blood clots. However, with blood clots there is often pain generated when the swollen area has pressure applied to the area. Chronic venous insufficiency often has skin changes in color and texture as described above but may also develop skin ulcers or secondary infections.

Injury or infection of the ankle is usually unilateral, but can be bilateral. Injury or infection is often, in the early stages, limited to either the foot or the ankle, but may spread to each other. Swelling due to trauma usually is localized to the injured area ; in some instances, the swollen skin area may be damaged by abrasion, laceration, or bruised.

Edema is the swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in the bodys tissue. It usually occurs in the feet, ankles, and legs, but it can happen in other parts of the body, too.

The condition often occurs as the result of congestive heart failure . It can also be the result of medication, pregnancy, or another underlying condition, like kidney disease or cirrhosis of the liver.

An array of conditions congestive heart failure and lung, liver, kidney, and thyroid diseases ; can lead to edema. It can also be caused by medications to control blood pressure or by an allergic reaction.

Signs that you have edema include these symptoms:

  • Swelling or puffiness of the tissue directly under the skin, especially in the legs or arms
  • Arms or legs that feel full or heavy
  • Shiny or stretched skin
  • Skin that retains pits, or a dimple, after being pressed for several seconds
  • Not fitting into clothing or jewelry
  • A tightening or warming of the skin near the swelling
  • Difficulty moving joints
  • An increased abdominal size

If you have any of these symptoms, make an appointment to see your doctor. However, you should seek medical attention immediately if you experience these along with shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, or chest pain.

Determining The Cause Of Nephrotic Syndrome

Top 10 Common Kidney Disease Symptoms

The doctor investigates possible causes of nephrotic syndrome, including drugs.

Analysis of the urine and blood may reveal an underlying disorder. For example, the blood is tested for evidence of previous infections that could cause nephrotic syndrome and for antibodies directed against the body’s own tissues that indicate an autoimmune disorder.

An imaging test of the kidneys, such as ultrasonography or computed tomography , may be done. If the person has lost weight or is older, a search for cancer is undertaken. A kidney biopsy is especially useful in determining the cause and extent of kidney damage.

  • Urinary tract infections ;
  • Lupus cystitis ;

The most common symptom of UTIs and lupus cystitis is peeing more often than usual. Your doctor can do tests to find out whether problems in your urinary system are caused by lupus or by a medicine youre taking to treat lupus.

Legs Swelling In Kidney Failure

Swelling in the legs, ankles, hands and face is often seen in kidney failure patients. It is also called edema in clinic and in serious conditions edema can affect internal organs and even cause pulmonary failure or congestive heart failure.

What cause legs swelling?

Healthy kidneys can remove excessive fluid, electrolytes in the body and maintain the balance of water, electrolytes and acid-base. When kidneys are damaged, water can not be discharged but instead accumulate in the patients body. What is more, kidney failure often cause proteinuria and low serum albumin which can lower plasma colloid osmotic pressure and cause more fluid being filtered into tissues from the blood vessels.

How to treat legs swelling and kidney failure?

* Drugs

Diuretics are the conventionally prescribed drugs to treat swelling by increasing urination and removing excessive fluid from the body.

* Dialysis

If the legs swelling is too serious to be controlled by drugs and patients have developed other severe illness conditions such as extremely high creatinine, high blood potassium, pulmonary edema, heart failure, dialysis is necessary. Dialysis functions as an artificial kidney to remove excessive fluid, electrolytes, metabolic wastes and toxins outsides the body.

* Chinese medicines

    What Are The Causes Of Kidney Failure

    Kidney failure is the outcome of various medical conditions that harm the kidneys filtering units and leads them to the stage of dysfunction. It is prominent to determine the cause of kidney failure to treat the disease accordingly.

    People who are at the central risk of developing kidney failure can relate to the underlying factors.

    Lack of blood flow to the kidneys

    Every organ needs sufficient blood in order to run its functions properly; kidneys also need blood to function. Blood loss in the kidneys at a sudden rate can prompt kidney failure. Some conditions that reduce the blood flow to the kidneys are as follows;

    • Cardiac attack.
    • Scarred liver or liver failure.
    • Dehydration.
    • An allergic reaction.
    • A deadly infection such as sepsis.

    High blood pressure is described as the most common culprit renowned for causing damage to the kidneys. However, increased levels of blood pressure weaken the blood filtering arteries surrounding kidneys. Due to which the kidneys face reduced blood flow and enter the phase of impairment.

    Obstructed urine elimination

    Your body needs to be free from toxicities in order to have the proper functioning of the kidneys. When the body faces difficulties in eliminating the urine, accumulation of toxicities occurs, overloading the kidneys.

    However, some cancers are known to block the passage of urine. They are stated below:

    • Pain or pressure in the chest.
    • Seizures.
    • Coma.

    Why Is An Edema Associated With Kidney Disease

    What To Know About Kidney Pain

    Kidney disease and edema are often associated because edema can be one of the symptoms of kidney problems.

    When you experience kidney failure, the kidneys are unable to process the extra fluid from your body. That is when the extra fluid builds up in certain parts of the body causing swelling. The most common parts are under the eyes, legs, hands, and especially ankles. This is why ankle edema and kidney disease are most commonly paired.

    Edema can also happen when there is damage caused to the clusters in the small kidney vessels. These clusters filter extra fluid and waste from your blood, which cannot be done if the clusters are damaged. These problems usually cause nephrotic syndrome, a kidney disorder that lets excess protein levels in the urine.

    Nephrotic syndrome can cause advanced leg edema. Edema is one of the kidney disease symptoms that are usually more progressed and indicate a later stage of kidney disease.

    Find Out If You Have Lupus Nephritis

    Since lupus nephritis may not cause symptoms at first, its important that people with lupus get tested for kidney problems. Your doctor or a special doctor called a nephrologist can find out if you have lupus nephritis or other problems in your urinary system.;

    You may need different kinds of tests, including:;

    • Urine tests to check for blood and protein in your urine
    • Blood tests to check how well your kidneys are filtering waste out of your blood
    • Kidney biopsy to check for inflammation and scarring in your kidney tissue

    What Is Nephrotic Syndrome

    Nephrotic syndrome is a group of symptoms that indicate your kidneys;are not working properly. These symptoms include

    • too much protein;in your urine, called proteinuria
    • low levels of a protein called albumin;in your blood, called hypoalbuminemia
    • swelling in parts of your body, called edema
    • high levels of cholesterol;and other lipids in your blood, called hyperlipidemia

    Your kidneys are made up of about a million filtering units called nephrons. Each nephron includes a filter, called the glomerulus, and a tubule. The glomerulus filters your blood, and the tubule returns needed substances to your blood and removes wastes and extra water, which become urine. Nephrotic syndrome usually happens when the glomeruli are inflamed, allowing too much protein;to leak from your blood into your urine.

    What You Can Do

    To get ready for your appointment, ask if there’s anything you need to do ahead of time, such as limit your diet. Then make a list of:

    • Your symptoms, including any that seem unrelated to your kidneys or urinary function
    • All your medications and doses, vitamins or other supplements that you take
    • Your key medical history, including any other medical conditions
    • Questions to ask your doctor, listing the most important ones first in case time runs short

    Take a family member or friend along, if possible. Sometimes it can be hard to remember everything you talked about with your doctor, and a relative or friend may hear something that you missed or forgot.

    For end-stage renal disease, some basic questions to ask your doctor include:

    • What’s the level of damage to my kidneys?
    • Is my kidney function worsening?
    • Do I need more tests?
    • What’s causing my condition?

    So Now Is The Time To Pamper Your Kidneys

    If youre experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, you should see your health practitioner and have a check-up, including tests to assess your kidney function.

    And you should also make sure youre helping your kidneys stay in top shape by doing a thorough cleanse.

    Even if you dont have any of these signs, a systemic cleanse is like a spa day for your kidneys. It helps them get in top shape and avoid damage and disease. This is why OsteoCleanse, The 7 Day Bone Building Accelerator was developed in conjunction with the Osteoporosis Reversal Program.

    OsteoCleanse is not just about alkalizing your body, feeling younger and more energized, and removing osteoporosis drugs from your system. It does all of these things in just seven days, but at the heart of OsteoCleanses effectiveness are its kidney-boosting, liver-cleansing effects so youll strengthen and build your bones faster.

    Its always a good idea to heed early warning signs and treat your kidneys to a cleanse before damage occurs, and its particularly important to offset the effects of aging on your renal system.
