What Did People Who Developed Stones Drink
Perhaps the most useful study of this matter is by Ferraro and colleagues. Two large groups of nurses and one group of physicians have been followed for many years to ascertain habits and diets that appear healthy or unhealthy.
Some of the people in each group developed kidney stones. Most, as expected, did not. Because diet habits were closely monitored by well established questionnaires over the years, the scientists could determine which beverages, my particular concern here, were associated with a higher or lower risk of becoming a stone former.
The amounts are important to keep in mind. For coffee and tea it was 8 ounce servings. For juices, a small glass. For carbonated drinks and beer a glass, bottle or can. For wine a 5 ounce glass. Servings were graded from less than 1 weekly, over the range of 1, 2-4, 5-6 weekly, and more than 1 serving a day. A significant effect meant that as the amounts increased, the risk of new stones increased or decreased in rough proportion there was a dose effect.

DR. GOULD:Calcium oxalate stones are the most common type of kidney stonesreduce
So especially for a lot of females that get kidney stones, a lot of them are at risk for osteoporosis. So we tell them to maintain their normal calcium levels. And if your calcium levels are low, then you might even need to still get supplemented on a calcium supplement.
But again, for everyone who has stones who comes to see us, we can do a metabolic evaluation to check their electrolytes. We can actually see what the calcium level is in the blood, and we can see what the calcium level is in the urine. There can be a variety of reasons for having high calcium in the urine. For example, it can be due to something hormonal, like having a parathyroid gland lesion on a parathyroid gland in the neck, which is the gland that regulates calcium in the body.
Bottom line: Just because you have a calcium oxalate stone, don’t assume you need to limit your calcium. Calcium is important to your diet.
In terms of the oxalate levels, most oxalate is from the diet. There are some very rare genetic diseases where oxalate is not metabolized in the liver correctly, and that can lead to having high oxalate levels. But the majority of people that we see, the oxalate is something that’s from their diet.

Is There A Link Between Kidney Stones And Energy Drinks
Kidney stones are usually formed following a build-up of certain chemicals in the body, such as calcium, oxalate, uric acid and cysteine, according to the NHS. Most are calcium stones, usually in the form of calcium oxalate. Energy drinks and other caffeinated beverages like coffee, tea and soda contain oxalate, hence the belief that they can cause the problem.
Spire consultant urologist Subu Subramonian confirmed that the case pictured did appear to be kidney stones. However, he said such a severe case is unlikely to be caused entirely by excessive consumption of energy drinks.
The appearance suggests that the patient may have a congenital condition such as renal tubular acidosis which predispose them to multiple calcification in the meat and tubes of the kidney due to a fault in the filtration mechanism for calcium in the micro tubes of the kidney. This condition leads to recurrent and multiple stones in the kidney and patient may end up with some kidney dysfunction as well.
He explained that kidney stones often have no definite, single cause, and that several factors increase risk. Other contributing factors in play here could be inadequate water intake and high consumption of animal protein and salt, he said.
