While Were Waiting Look At Labels We Have Now

Is Diet Soda Bad for Your Kidneys? | The Cooking Doc®

As illustrations, we use what we most love. You can think about your own desires and find the labels for them.

Ben and Jerrys ice cream contains 26 gm of sugar in 1/2 cup, and I have never eaten less than 1.5 2 cups for dessert.

You know sugar has been added by looking at the ingredient list. For example, sugar is the third item, meaning more important, and also the fifth and later as cane sugar. So of the 20 gm, much is added. I have nothing against Ben or Jerry, many ice creams are high in sugar, I picked it as Dr. Coe loves it, and I too when around him, have it on occasion.

How To Transition Away From Soda

Unfortunately, abandoning a couple cans of sodas each day to just drinking water can be a tall order. Many people who are used to the sensation of carbonation have a hard time drinking still water. Luckily, carbonated water can replace a soda addiction and provide similar liver health benefits to water.

According to Atlanta-based nutritionist Marisa Moore, RDN, carbonated water is just as hydrating as still water. With carbonated water, you get the same pleasant fizz without the calories and liver health risks associated with both regular and diet soda. Switching from soda to carbonated water is mostly a matter of abandoning the sweet taste.

Kidney Function Decline Among Women

Women are said to be especially prone to kidney ailments that may result from excessive artificially sweetened soda consumption. These sodas are popular for their promise of no sugar or low calories. Unfortunately, while studies have made a connection between kidney dysfunction in women and the consumption of artificially sweetened soda beverages, they have not been able to pinpoint the exact sweetener that causes the risk.

So how much is too much? The consumption of two or more servings of low-calorie artificially sweetened soda drinks per day by women is said to increase the risk of kidney function decline two-fold.

How To Wean Off Sugar

Who doesnt love dessert? I, for one, thoroughly enjoy cookies, cake, and ice cream, but I keep it for here and there and not everywhere.

I know that many of you love it, too, because you tell me everyday that this is the hardest thing for you to avoid. But I am here to tell you that it is possible to lessen your sugar and still want to wake up in the morning. Really.

I work with many clients who have a very tough time lessening their sugar intake. It is hard at first, but it gets better over time.

Is Soda Really Bad For Your Kidneys?

Shots-Medical News Diet drinks may be detrimental to your kidneys: Women who consumed two or more diet sodas per day had a two-fold increase in the likelihood of a major decline in their kidneys’ ability to filter blood, according to the study. The researchers also found that women who drank at least two cans of soda daily had twice the risk of developing chronic kidney disease as those who didn’t consume any sugar-sweetened beverages.

The study included data on 4,729 women between the ages of 20 and 95 who participated in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey . After taking into account age, race, body mass index, smoking status, alcohol consumption, diabetes, hypertension, and cholesterol levels, the researchers concluded that women who drank two or more servings of soda each day had nearly twice the risk of developing chronic kidney disease as those who didn’t drink any sugary drinks. They also had a higher risk of developing mild renal impairment and requiring dialysis.

It’s important to note that although the study showed a connection between drinking diet drinks and losing kidney function over time, it did not prove cause and effect. It could be that other unmeasured factors are responsible for both trends observed by the researchers. Also, since the study only examined women, we cannot say anything about the effects of sugar-sweetened beverages on men’s kidneys.

What Is Phosphoric Acid

Phosphoric Acid is a colorless, odorless, and corrosive crystalline liquid that gives carbonated drinks its tangy flavor and prevents mold and bacteria growth. According to British pharmacist Niraj Naik, the intense sweetness of Coca-Cola should make a person throw up as soon as it enters the body, but the phosphoric acid dulls the sweetness, allowing people to keep the drink down. Colas are acidified by phosphoric acid, unlike other carbonated soda drinks that use citric acid. Phosphoric acid is made from the mineral phosphorus that is naturally found in the body.

It works with calcium to support bone health, kidney function, and the bodys ability to store and use energy. Phosphorus is responsible for all cellular processes and plays an essential role in using B vitamins, delivering oxygen to tissues, and growing connective tissue.

As phosphorus is found naturally in many foods, it is more common for people to have too much phosphorus in the body. People with healthy kidney function remove excess phosphorus naturally. However, people with CKD cannot remove phosphorus efficiently, increasing their risk of developing hyperphosphatemia.

Hyperphosphatemia refers to abnormally elevated serum phosphate levels as a result of decreased phosphate excretion or increased phosphate intake. Most people with hyperphosphatemia dont manifest symptoms. For people with CKD, elevated phosphate levels trigger calcium levels in the body to drop.

Diet sodas erode our bones and have been related to renal disease, obesity, and diabetes. Furthermore, a study of older persons discovered that those who drank diet soda on a regular basis had a 43 percent higher chance of having a heart attack or stroke than those who never drank diet soda. Although the researchers weren’t able to determine exactly why this would be the case, some possible explanations include increased acidity due to the use of phosphoric acid as a preservative in diet drinks or reduced calcium intake due to additional calories from sodium consumed by those who drink them.

Diet drinks contain no nutrients but instead rely on artificial sweeteners for their flavor. The most common alternative used for diet beverages is aspartame, which has been linked to headaches, nausea, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms. A more natural alternative is stevia, which is 200 times sweeter than sugar. However, studies have shown that even using large amounts of stevia can cause health problems such as thyroid dysfunction and digestive issues.

Because diet drinks do not provide any nutritional value, they will only make you feel hungrier later on in the day. Therefore, it’s important to enjoy real food rather than artificially flavored drinks if you want to lose weight successfully.

Too Many Sugary Sodas Might Harm Your Kidneys

Drinking lots of sweetened soda may increase the risk of developing chronic kidney disease, two new studies find.

Consumption of 500ml of a commercially available soft drink, sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup increased vascular resistance in the kidneys within 30 minutes, the researchers found.

In a second study, the investigators found changes in blood flow in the kidneys was caused by the corn syrup, not the caffeine, in the soda.

The two studies included a total of 25 healthy men and women, with an average age of 22 to 24.

Millions have chronic kidney disease

Christopher Chapman, of the University at Buffalo in New York, and colleagues explained that vascular resistance occurs when blood vessels constrict, reducing blood flow in the kidneys and increasing blood pressure and impairing kidney function.

Collectively, our findings indicate that -sweetened soft drink consumption increased renal vasoconstrictor tone at rest and during sympathetic activation, the study authors said in a news release from the American Physiological Society.

The report was published online recently in the American Journal of Physiology Renal Physiology.

Nearly 37 million Americans suffer from chronic kidney disease, according to the National Kidney Foundation. The foundation estimates kidney disease kills more people than breast cancer or prostate cancer.

Preventing Uric Acid Stones

diet coke is a plague

Uric acid stones are formed by a diet high in animal proteins, or from excessive uric acid production from within the body. Most of these stones can be prevented from making the urine less acidic which results in the uric acid being in a dissolved state.

This can be achieved in the majority of patients by alkalinizing the urine using oral bicarbonate preparations , and drinking plenty of oral fluids to keep the urine dilute.

In some circumstances an oral prescription medication called allopurinol maybe used to prevent excessive internal production of uric acid within the body.

Your doctor will advise you about your specific circumstances and tailor the treatment accordingly.

It doesnt just matter how much you drink for kidney health but what youre drinking that makes drinks good for kidneys. Beverages can be great to keep you hydrated and allow the kidneys to filter out toxins and wastes.

How You Can Get Kidney Stones From Drinking Soda

Sodas are filled with unhealthy chemicals, including high levels of processed bleached sugar, phosphoric acid, caffeine, and high fructose corn syrup. These ingredients can be extremely harmful to your body, especially when consumed in large amounts.

High fructose corn syrup, in particular, can metabolize into oxalate and increase excretion of uric acid and calcium. This combination of high-level oxalate, uric acid, and calcium encourage kidney stone formation. Phosphoric acid is another culprit found in the average soda. This chemical creates an acidic environment in your kidney tract, enabling kidney stones to form more easily. In addition, many sodas are high in caffeine which is a diuretic that encourages chronic dehydration, which is the most common risk factor for kidney stone formation.

    Think Outside The Bottle

  • Infused water: Adding a few pieces of fresh fruit and/or herbs to your water can give it a hint of flavor without adding any sugar or calories. Get creative with fruit and herb combinations like blackberry and mint, watermelon and basil, or lavender and lemon. Or try something with a little kick like apples and cinnamon, peaches and ginger, or strawberry and jalapeno.
  • Sparkling water: Sparkling water is a great change from sugary sodas when you are craving something bubbly. If plain sparkling water isnt your cup of tea, you can infuse it just like plain water, or try any of the new flavored sparkling water options available in stores. Look for brands and flavors that have no added sugar or sweeteners, like La Croix.
  • Tea: If you think about it, tea is basically just infused water! Leave out the sugar, and tea is another great zero-calorie drink choice that can be enjoyed hot or cold. If you are sensitive to caffeine, look for decaf versions of black and green tea, or try a caffeine-free herbal tea like chamomile, rooibos, or peppermint. If you drink bottled tea, check the ingredients and look for options that have no added sugar or sweeteners.

In some studies, carbonated water improved satiety, or the feeling of fullness. That could be a benefit for people who constantly feel hungry. Carbonated water improves digestion and helps constipation, so that empties the stomach and could possibly make someone feel hungry.
