What Is Carbonated Water
Carbonated water is water that has been infused with carbon dioxide gas under pressure.
This produces a bubbly drink thats also known as sparkling water, club soda, soda water, seltzer water, and fizzy water.
Apart from seltzer water, carbonated waters usually have salt added to improve their taste. Sometimes small amounts of other minerals are included.
Natural sparkling mineral waters, such as Perrier and San Pellegrino, are different.
These waters are captured from a mineral spring and tend to contain minerals and sulfur compounds. They are often carbonated as well.
Tonic water is a form of carbonated water that contains a bitter compound called quinine, along with sugar or high-fructose corn syrup.

However, drinking an acidic beverage like carbonated water does not make your body more acidic.

Is Diet Soda Bad For Health
Diet soda is also unhealthful. Diet soda contains artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame or saccharin.
Research conducted in 2018 supported the notion that soda is a risk factor for diabetes. The study also found that switching to diet soda does not lower the risk of developing diabetes. It may even be an independent risk factor.

CDC endorses sparkling water as an alternative to sugary drinks, such as soda. However, always make sure that the sparkling water does not contain sugar or other sweeteners.
Drinking carbonated water can help people stop consuming soda. Carbonated water does not have to be flavorless. Options are available that contain added fruit flavors and minerals.
Always check the label and choose the varieties that do not contain added sugars, artificial sweeteners, caffeine, or sodium.
Experts point out that the best choice for satisfying thirst is water.

Diet Soda And Kidney Function: Dietitian’s View
In reviewing the study, Connie Diekman, RD, director of university nutrition for Washington University, St. Louis, wonders if the link might have come about because of long-term consumption, as many of the participants were older adults.
The link found, she says, “calls for more studies where actual intake can be assessed, rather than taking the information from food frequency questionnaires, which could be subject to mistakes.”
Diet drinks, she says, are ”generally low in important health-promoting nutrients, so keeping them as a small part of your eating plan would be a smart step.”

Say No To That Diet Soda
An important new finding has been reported from the Nurses’ Health Study, which is a long term study that found that diets high in sodium were hard on the kidneys, and gave other information about heart disease, cancer risk factors, and the use of hormone treatments after menopause.
Now doctors conducting this study have reported that drinking a lot of sugar-free cola beverages or other carbonated soft drinks might have effects on health. Kidney health may be one of those things. Kidney function declined over two decades in women who drank several diet sodas a day, according to researchers from the prestigious Nurses’ Health Study. In fact, compared with women who did not drink diet soda, soda-drinking women had a 30% greater reduction in kidney function in 20 years. More than 3,000 women have participated in the study for 20 years or more now the women’s median age is 67 years.
At the start of the study, all the women had healthy kidney function, according to Julie Lin, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Drinking one diet soda daily did not decrease kidney function more than normal. Drinking two or more diet sodas, though, appeared to cause problems.
With some 37 million Americans suffering from chronic kidney disease, it is a major public health problem. The study with the nurses will have to be confirmed by other studies. But in the meantime, water may be the best thing to drink.
Can Carbonated Water Trigger The Hunger Hormone Ghrelin
Probably not. There was a small animal study that found consuming only carbonated water caused an increase in ghrelin. More studies need to be performed. In some studies, carbonated water improved satiety, or the feeling of fullness. That could be a benefit for people who constantly feel hungry. Carbonated water improves digestion and helps constipation, so that empties the stomach and could possibly make someone feel hungry.

Diet Soda And Kidneys: Study Results
When the researchers compared kidney function of the women in 1989 and 2000, they found that 11.4% or 372 women had a kidney function decline of 30% or more. When they looked at the diet information, they found that the 30% decline in kidney function was associated with drinking two or more artificially sweetened sodas a day. This was true even after taking into account factors such as age, high blood pressure, diabetes, and physical activity.
Put another way: the women who drank two or more diet sodas a day had a decline in their glomerular filtration rate, a measure of kidney function, of 3 milliliters per minute per year. ”With natural aging, kidney function declines about 1 mL per minute per year after age 40,” Lin says. No link was found with the other beverages. And less than two sodas a day didn’t seem to hurt. “We didn’t see any association up to two artificially sweetened beverages a day,” Lin says.

”A serving was reported as either a glass, a can, or a bottle of a beverage,” Lin tells WebMD. ”It was not more specific than that.”
”The mechanisms aren’t clear,” Lin says of the association she found. In another study she presented at the meeting, she found higher salt intake is also associated with faster kidney function decline.
All of the participants were women, so Lin can’t say for sure that the association holds for men, although she says there is ”no biological reason to think it wouldn’t.”
Youll Be More Hydrated
Thirsty? Drinking water is the way to go .
Soda contains caffeine, which is a diuretic, says Dr. Rodriguez-Lopez. As a result, drinking soda will actually dehydrate you. This can strain your body to find sources of water which puts a good deal of stress on your kidneys. If you need something to quench your thirst and rehydrate, water is always the best choice. If you prefer something with more flavor, try adding fresh fruit to your water.

Soda Effects On The Kidneys
Soft drinks are the single largest source of sugar and calories in the American diet, reports Harvard School of Public Health. Most beverages contain 7 to 10 teaspoons of sugar per serving, which is more than the recommended daily intake.
Tip
According to the American Heart Association, women should have no more than six teaspoons of sugar per day. Men, on the other hand, should not exceed nine teaspoons a day.
Diet soda isn’t healthier either. According to a January 2017 cohort study published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, diet beverages may increase the risk of end-stage renal disease in the long run. Subjects who reported the highest diet soda consumption were more likely to develop this disorder, which indicates a dose-response relationship. Furthermore, these drinks may impair glucose metabolism, leading to diabetes.
Dietary phosphorus, one of the primary ingredients in diet and regular soda, may affect phosphorus levels in the bloodstream and increase the acid load. This factor alone may contribute to renal damage. Additionally, diet soda may impair kidney function due to its effects on glucose metabolism.

Side Effects Of Sodium Bicarbonate
Common side effects of sodium bicarbonate include belching and flatulence.2 It is important to note that higher doses may cause fluid retention and worsen blood pressure control with CKD patients. Sodium bicarbonate may also reduce serum potassium. This can be beneficial for people with later stages of CKD who are at risk of high potassium levels.

Too Many Sugary Sodas Might Harm Your Kidneys
Drinking lots of sweetened soda may increase the risk of developing chronic kidney disease, two new studies find.
“Consumption of 500ml of a commercially available soft drink, sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup increased vascular resistance in the kidneys within 30 minutes,” the researchers found.
In a second study, the investigators found changes in blood flow in the kidneys was caused by the corn syrup, not the caffeine, in the soda.
The two studies included a total of 25 healthy men and women, with an average age of 22 to 24.
Millions have chronic kidney disease
Christopher Chapman, of the University at Buffalo in New York, and colleagues explained that vascular resistance occurs when blood vessels constrict, reducing blood flow in the kidneys and increasing blood pressure and impairing kidney function.
“Collectively, our findings indicate that -sweetened soft drink consumption increased renal vasoconstrictor tone at rest and during sympathetic activation,” the study authors said in a news release from the American Physiological Society.
The report was published online recently in the American Journal of Physiology Renal Physiology.
Nearly 37 million Americans suffer from chronic kidney disease, according to the National Kidney Foundation. The foundation estimates kidney disease kills more people than breast cancer or prostate cancer.

Diet Soda And Kidneys: Study Details
The researchers evaluated 3,256 women already participating in the Nurses’ Health Study who had submitted dietary information, including their intake of sugary beverages — sugar-sweetened drinks, sugar-sweetened soda, and artificially sweetened soda. Sugar-sweetened drinks included soda, fruit juices, punch, and iced tea.
Information was also available on measures of kidney function. Their median age was 67.
Lin’s team looked at the cumulative average beverage intake, derived from food questionnaires completed in 1984, 1986, and 1990. The women replied whether they drank the beverages less than once a month, one to four times a month, two to six times weekly, once daily but less than twice, or twice a day or more often.

Sodium Bicarbonate And Chronic Kidney Disease
Metabolic acidosis has been associated with the progression of CKD.2,3 Sodium bicarbonate supplementation is recommended for CKD patients whose bicarbonate lab levels are less than 22 mmol/L.1,2 Sodium bicarbonate, a base, helps to neutralize and decrease the blood acid levels. Studies have been done to see if bicarbonate supplementation slows the progression of CKD.2-4 A study published in 2010 compared sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, and placebo supplementation in stage 2 hypertension-associated CKD patients over 5 years.4 The decline in kidney function decreased significantly for those taking sodium bicarbonate compared to the other groups. This slowing of CKD progression with sodium bicarbonate supplementation was also supported by a 2015 review of other small studies that included participants with CKD stages 2-5.3 The results from these studies show that sodium bicarbonate may slow the progression of kidney disease.
Kidney Function Decline Among Women
Women are said to be especially prone to kidney ailments that may result from excessive artificially sweetened soda consumption. These sodas are popular for their promise of no sugar or low calories. Unfortunately, while studies have made a connection between kidney dysfunction in women and the consumption of artificially sweetened soda beverages, they have not been able to pinpoint the exact sweetener that causes the risk.
So how much is too much? The consumption of two or more servings of low-calorie artificially sweetened soda drinks per day by women is said to increase the risk of kidney function decline two-fold.
