How To Measure The Surface Area Of A Kidney

Calculating Pool Volumes I

You already know by now that to get an accurate measurement of the surface area, it is ideal to measure severally the different bulges of the swimming pool.

  • Find out which axis of the pool is the longest. Next, on an imaginary line, measure the length of that axis from one end to the other. You may want to measure again, just to be sure. Write down your findings.
  • Check which bulge is wider, and measure the width with a ruler, writing your measurement down as A. Go to the smaller bulge of the pool and measure the width as well this time, writing down the measurement as B. In this case, it also helps to doublecheck to make sure you have the accurate figures.
  • Calculate the surface area using the simple formula:
  • 0.45 X X Length X Average depth X 7.5 = Volume of Kidney-shaped pool in gallons

A quick example: If a kidney-shaped pool is15 feet long, the wider bulge is 7 feet wide, the smaller one is 3 feet, andits average depth is 4.5 feet, the volume in gallons will be calculated asfollows:

    0.45 X X 4.5 X 7.5 = 151.88 gallons.

All that being said, no matter the size or shape of your pool, there usually comes a time when the water becomes worn out and you have to drain it. Take advantage of our expert guide on How to Drain a Pool to do so in easy steps.

    What About Freeform Swimming Pools

Irregularly shaped pools are super popular and a lot of fun from a design perspective, but can be a bit of a headache when calculating pool water volume. To solve this problem, break your pool dimensions down into smaller regular chunks. If your pool is kidney shaped, break it down into two circles. From there, use the calculator above to determine the volume of the two halves and then add them together to get the full volume of the pool.

    Irregular Pool Volume Calculator

    0.45 x x Length x Average Depth x 7.5 = Volume

The easiest way to calculate the pool volume, is by imagining your pool as two smaller shapes. We will measure these smaller shapes separately and then add them together to discover the total pool volume. You will get each smaller sections volume by using one of the above formulas.

First, lets add the total measurement of shape A plus shape B. Then, multiple this number by 0.45. Next, multiple that number by the length of your pool to get the total surface area. Now, just multiple the surface area number by your average depth, followed by 7.5 to get your pools total volume in gallons.

Example: Lets say you have a kidney shaped swimming pool. The first section has a circumference of 20 Ft and the smaller section is 10 Ft. The average depth is 8 Ft and length is 40 Ft. This is what the formula would look like: 0.45 x x 40 x 8 x 7.5 = 32,400 gallons of water.

To make things easy, we also created a convenient Pool Volume Chart that shows the estimated amount of gallons for popular pool sizes. Quickly find your size and shape, then use this info to add the recommended amount of pool chemicals to your pool.

If a pool volume chart or pool calculator doesnt work properly for you because you have an unusual pool shape, or you just want everything to be accurate to the decimal point, you can have a pool professional take the measurements and figure out the volume for you.

    Formulas Behind Pool Calculator

    Pool Volume Calculator

So you no longer need to worry “how many gallons is my pool?”, simply apply one of the formulas:

  • Rectangular / square pool
  • volume = length * width * / 2

The first two agents is, of course, the formula for the area of the rectangle.

  • Oval / circle pool
  • volume = * / 2

The first part of the equation comes from a standard area of an ellipsis formula: A = * a * b, where a, b are the distances between the center and the ellipse’s vertex, lying on the horizontal and vertical axes. In our case, we have the length and width values that are the doubled distances a and b, so in the final formula, we need to divide the surface area of an oval by 4.

You are wondering why we average the depths / 2? Have a look at the pictures:

  • Here you have the standard rectangular pool. l stands for the length of the pool, w for width, d1 is depth on one end of the pool and d2 is the depth on the other end.
  • Let’s take the right trapezoidal side of the pool. “Cut” the triangle, with one apex in the midpoint of the side, as in the picture.
  • Flip and move it to the other side to form a rectangle. The edge of the new shape is the average of two sides, so / 2.
  • The area of such a rectangle is then length * / 2. Multiply it by the third dimension – the width – and you’ll get the final formula for rectangular pool volume:

    • volume = length * width * / 2

How To Compute Volume Of A Square Or Rectangular Pool

You can get the volume in litres of a square or rectangular pool by multiplying the length by the width and the average depth then multiplying the result by 28.31. To get the average depth of your pool, take the depth of the shallow end of your pool and add it to the depth of the deep end, and divide by two. Heres a quick example. Lets say the shallow end of your pool is 3 feet deep and the deep end is 7 feet deep. Add those two together 3 feet +7 feet =10 feet. Divide that by 2, what youll end up with is having an average depth of 5 feet.

    For Example:

The pool is 30 feet long, 15 feet wide, and has an average depth of 5 feet.

The formula for that would look like:

    x 28.31 litres

So thats 2,250 cubic feet x 28.31 litres

So this particular pools volume would be 65,947.5 liters give or take a few.

    Length x Width x Average Depth x 28.31 = Volume in litres

How To Calculate Swimming Pool Volume

“How do I calculate the volume of a pool?” This article will guide you on how to measure a swimming pool and calculate its volume of water. Let’s begin.

It is essential to know the volume of a swimming pool to make accurate chemistry adjustments. Even veteran pool professionals can eyeball a pool and estimate the volume of it…but how accurately? We have found through surveying many of our customers around the country, that pool volume estimationswithout measuringare often off by more than 2000-3000 gallons . On average, that’s about a 10% error. Ten percent!

That could mean 10% more chemicals used , or it could mean under-dosing the pool every visit. Neither are good outcomes, and will lead to water chemistry challenges.

Some pools are fortunate enough to have a specific volume on record . But many pools are not so fortunate. For those pools, we must estimate their volume by measuring dimensions and doing some calculations. There are several pool volume calculators available online, and our free Orenda App has a Pool Volume Estimator feature that uses the formula provided in the NSPF‘s Certified Pool Operator training manual.

How To Calculate The Volume Of An Oval Pool

You can calculate the volume of an oval swimming pool by multiplying the length times the width in feet times 3.14 divided by 4 times average depth in feet times 7.48. The formula is:

    volume = length × width × ÷ 4 × depth × 7.48

The first part of this formula determines the area, and multiplying by the depth finds the volume. Again, multiplying by 7.48 determines how many gallons of water are in the pool.

Like a rectangular pool, the average depth can be found by adding the shallow and deep depths and then dividing by 2.

    Oval Swimming Pools And Spas

    Calculating Your Swimming Pool’s Volume

Oval swimming pools and spas are shaped like rectangles with rounded ends. To calculate the volume in gallons for oval swimming pools and spas:

  • Measure the overall length and width in feet.
  • Calculate the average depth by adding the depth of the deep end to the depth of the shallow end and dividing by two.
  • Multiply the overall length by the width, and then multiply by the average depth. Multiply that value by 6.7 to find the capacity in gallons.

Calculating The Volume Of Your Pool In Gallons

To calculate how many gallons of water your pool holds, you need to calculate its cubic volume.

To calculate the cubic volume, multiply the surface area of the swimming pool by the depth of the pool. It is therefore important to get the accurate, average depth of each side of the pool as shown previously, for best results.

There are 7.5 gallons in each cubic foot of water, so the product of the different dimensions will be multiplied by 7.5 to give the volume of water in gallons. Below is a simple breakdown of this formula for different pool types:

    The Features Of The Catalina

With a total water volume of only 6,800 gallons, we classify it as part of our Medium Size pool family. The Catalina is an excellent addition to Urban environments with small backyard spaces. How To Calculate The Volume Of A Rectangular Pool

You can find the volume of a rectangular swimming pool in gallons by multiplying the length by the width by the average depth in feet by 7.48. The formula to find pool volume in gallons is thus:

    volume = length × width × depth × 7.48.

The first part of this formula determines the volume of water in cubic feet. The second part converts cubic feet to gallons there are 7.48 gallons of water per ft3 of water.

Most pools have varying depths that slope from shallow to deeper. To accurately find the volume of water, youll need to estimate the average depth. To find the average depth add the shallow depth with the deep depth, then divide by 2, e.g. ÷ 2.

    Round Swimming Pools And Spas

    Pool Volume Calculator

Round swimming pools and spas are perfectly circular in shape. To calculate the volume in gallons for round swimming pools and spas:

  • Measure the diameter in feet.
  • Calculate the average depth by adding the depth of the deep end to the depth of the shallow end and dividing by two.
  • Square the diameter , and then multiply by average depth. Multiply that value by 5.9 to find the capacity in gallons.

How To Measure The Average Depth Of Non Standard Pools

For most pools, measuring the depth of the water in the deepest part of your pool and the shallowest part of the pool is a pretty good estimate for the average depth. However, if a majority of your swimming pool is either shallow or deep, you need to do a little more work. Measure or make an estimate of the percentage of the pool that is at each depth and adjust the average accordingly.

For example, if the shallow end of your pool is 4 feet deep and is 25% of the pool, and the deep end of the pool is 10 feet deep and is 75% of the pool , you should adjust the average depth of the pool like this:4 feet*25% + 10 feet*75% = 8.5 feet average depth+

    Kidney Shaped Pool Dimensions

In shape, the kidney-shaped pool is similar to a long oval or ellipse with a nick on one of its sides. The niche is often used to house a spa, some landscape greenery, or a poolside lounge area.

Kidney-shaped pools are amazingly conducive to almost all kinds of yard spaces, and its curved lines make it look more inviting and natural than rectilinear pools. The clear delineation between the two sides of the pool also makes it easier to more naturally place a shallow end on one side and a deep end on the other.

In terms of specific dimensions, kidney shaped pools can come in as many size variations as you would need, its design resting mostly on the specific needs of the client as well as the physical limitations of a yard.

On the small-end, you can find kidney shaped pools 10 feet by 20 feet large. These types of pools are more suitable if economy of space is a priority. So typically, youll be seeing small dips like this in townhouses with particularly small backyards.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have larger pools that could go as big as 16 feet by 32 feet, as well. This is particularly popular for most large estates and can effectively be used for swimming laps or large pool parties.

On average, most families, especially ones with younger kids, opt for pools around 16 feet by 26 feet in size. This is a reasonably big addition to backyards but not so large that it might pose to be a hazard to the younger members of the family.

How To Calculate The Number of Gallons In A Pool

    Square or Rectangle ShapedKiddie Pool

Well, it depends on the area of your pool. For square or rectangle shape pool: Area = L x W x H. That means it is required to figure out the area by multiplying the length, width, and depth for rectangular or square shapes . If the depth is irregular, calculate the average depth and then calculate accordingly.

Now you will get the cubic feet area of the pool. Then multiple each cubic foot with 7.483 gallons since each cubic foot can hold 7.483 gallons for rectangle, square, or free-form pools and for Round or Oval pools, you need to multiply the cubic foot by 5.9 gallons.

    Square or Rectangle Shape Pool, Gallon of Water= L x W x H x 7.483 gallons

    Circular ShapedKiddie Pool

    For circle area: A = 3.14 x radius squared x average depth.

3.14 refers to the value of Pi. You will find some other odd shapes pools that will require more calculation to find out the areas.

Volume / Gallon of Water in ca Circle Shape Kiddie Pool= 3.14 x radius squared x average depth x 5.9 gallons

    Oval Shaped Kiddie Pool

    If you have an oval-shaped kiddie pool, you need to take the length times width, times the depth, times 5.9. For example, for a 2 x 4 pool 3 ft. high you would multiply 2 x 4 = 8. Then 8 x 3 = 24. Then 24 x 5.9 = 141.6 gallons needed.

You will get your required volume of water. By calculating this way, finding accurate measurements of your kiddie pool is possible.

How To Calculate The Volume Of An Irregular Oblong Or Kidney Shaped Pool

The volume of a oblong or kidney shaped pool is a little more complicated. You can calculate its volume by multiplying the length in feet times times .45 times the average depth in feet times 7.48.

    volume = length × × .45 × depth × 7.48

The first part × .45) is used to find the area, and then the volume is found by multiplying by the depth. Like before, multiplying by 7.48 finds the number of gallons in the pool.
