Instant Pot Red Kidney Beans. Dried kidney beans, ready in under an hour thanks to pressure cooking.

WaitI dont have a recipe for plain old red kidney beans in the Instant Pot? Just Red Beans and Rice? Well, its time to fix that

Thanks to the Camellia bean subscription box again. A bag of kidney beans came in the same box that inspired me to make Instant Pot Cajun White Beans, and thats when I realized I had a big hole in my basic bean recipes. Time to fix that!

See recipe card for quantities.

Using The Beans In A Recipe

When the 35 minutes is up, use an oven mitt or a kitchen towel to finish releasing the pressure. Carefully open the lid away from your face.

Using two oven mitts, carefully remove the inner pot of the electric pressure cooker. Using a colander, drain all the liquid from the beans. Give them a quick rinse under cool water.

Then, use the beans in any Instant Pot recipe that calls for dried beans. In this case, I added the beans to a chili recipe. For the chili recipe, I continued to cook the beans for 15 minutes on the pressure cook function and let the pressure naturally release for an additional 15 minutes.

Do I Need To Soak My Beans When Cooking Them In The Instant Pot

Unlike cooking beans on the stove, cooking beans in the Instant Pot does not require soaking. Simply rinse your beans and then add them to the Instant Pot with your cooking liquid and start pressure cooking.

However, I want to mention a few caveats that might make you want to soak your beans even though its not necessary.

How Do You Cook Beans In A Pressure Cooker

Add 8 cups of water, 1 teaspoon of salt, onion, garlic, bay leaf and oil to the pot. Cook the beans: Secure the pressure cookers lid and set the pressure to high for 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the beans you are using. Consult the chart above. Natural release: When the time is up, turn off the heat.

What Is The Difference Between Natural Release And Quick Release

Instant Pot Kidney Beans

When a recipe calls to let your Instant Potnatural release it means your pressure cooker will naturally release the pressure.

Many recipes call for the pressure cooker to naturally release for a period of time because this helps the recipe cook just a little longer.

Since the pressure cooker will be slowly losing pressure you do not have to do anything it will eventually lose all its pressure and the lid will unlock.

When a recipe calls for quick release this means you will manually be letting the pressure out of the Instant Pot.

You will have to turn the vent to the venting position and a bunch of hot steam will come out of the vent. It is very important that you do not put your hand in the steam as it is VERY HOT.

This will then immediately unlock the lid and the food can be served.

How Do You Get It

No one wants to go through the ordeal of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea when all they signed up for was a bowl of chili. Fortunately, if you cook red kidney beans at the right temperature, you’ll never have to worry about contracting Red Kidney Bean Poisoning. This poisoning is often caused by the ingestion of raw kidney beans, often an ingredient in salads.

Many outbreaks have also been linked to the use of slow cookers or crock pots, which are a popular way to make easy casseroles or soups. While these make the cooking process quicker and easier, they don’t reach a high enough temperature to kill the lectin in beans. Kidney beans need to be cooked at higher than 80 degrees Celsius, or 176 degrees Fahrenheit.

In fact, heating kidney beans to 80 degrees Celsius increases the toxicity five-fold, making them even more toxic than raw beans. Many slow cookers reach a lower temperature than 75 degrees Celsius, so slow cooking is not the way to go when cooking red kidney beans. Like lentils and black beans, red kidney beans are often bought dry, soaked overnight, and then cooked the next day. However, unlike other legumes, you have to be careful with how you cook your red kidney beans.

Bean Cooking Tips & Notes

  • Soak – Soaking your beans dramatically cuts down on cook time, as well as making them easier on your stomach.
  • Salt – Beans soaked and cooked in saltwater are more flavorful and tender, without bursting out of their skins.
  • Add enough water for soaking – Make sure you cover your beans by 2″ when soaking them. This allows the beans to re-hydrate and becomes more tender.
  • Add more water for cooking unsoaked beans: Add an extra cup of water while cooking the beans that haven’t been soaked.
  • Add a pinch of baking soda while cooking – Baking soda creates an alkaline environment, which allows the beans to cook more quickly and turn soft and creamy from within.

Kidney Beans Instant Pot Tips & Tricks

Quick and Easy NOT Soaked Kidney Beans cooked in the Instant Pot
  • Dont skip the veggie stock step. Using homemade instant pot veggie stock will transform your kidney beans. Otherwise, they will be rather boring and bland and will lack flavour.
  • Even though I used the instant pot, this kidney beans instant pot recipe will work with any electric pressure cooker.
  • You can store leftover cooked beans in your fridge and use them over a few different meals.
  • Add seasonings that fit in with what you are using the beans for. For example, if we are using them for a chicken summer salad, we will add tarragon along with some salt and pepper.
  • The ratio is mentioned in the recipe card and once you get used to the ratio it will be easy to remember for future dried beans batches.
  • Remember to allow your kidney beans to cool completely before placing into storage jars otherwise you will get a lot of condensation on them.

Interesting Instant Pot Trick Use hot water from the tap when adding water to the instant pot. It will then speed up the time it takes to go to pressure.

How To Cook Any Kind Of Beans In An Instant Pot

If I only used my instant pot to cook dried beans, I would still consider the purchase 100% worth it.

For years, I used my slow cooker to cook dried beans. Then I got an Instant Pot, and now that’s all I use.

Most of the time I use this super quick method to take beans from rock hard to soft and buttery in about an hour. But, sometimes I use my Instant Pot’s slow cooker setting to cook a pot of beans low and slow. It really just depends on the day’s schedule.

Either way, the hands on time to prepare a flavorful pot of beans is about 5 minutes, making this one of the easiest, most accessible recipes in my toolbox.

Exercise Caution When Doubling A Pot Of Beans

If you are cooking a large pot of beans in the Instant Pot, you should keep a few things in mind.

  • 1 pound of beans, once cooked, yields roughly 7 cups of beans. If youre feeding just 1 or 2 people, you might want to start with a smaller quantity.

  • If you have a lot of leftover beans, store them in 1 1/2 2 cup increments in the freezer. Thats the amount of beans youll find in a 15-ounce can of bean. That way, you can easily swap in one container of your defrosted beans for canned beans in recipes. Beans will stay good in the freezer for 6-8 months.

  • If youre keen on making a large pot of beans, try not to fill the Instant Pot more than halfway. Otherwise, you might end up with a lot of foaming. If you do cross that halfway line mark, never fill your pot up past the Instant Pots maximum capacity line.

  • Especially when you are making a large pot of beans, never use the Quick Release Method. This will result in bean foam being sprayed all of your kitchen and face. Instead, allow the Instant Pot to naturally release pressure for at least 10 minutes . Only then switch the valve from Sealing to Venting to release any remaining steam.

Do Beans Make You Toot

Instant Pot Rajma (Kidney Bean Curry)

Yes: If beans make you toot , you might want to consider soaking them. Soaking beans helps remove the oligosaccharides. Thats a fancy word for a type of fiber found in beans that some people have trouble digesting.

No: If you have no problem digesting beans, you can skip soaking.

To soak beans, you have a few options.

Traditional Soak Method

  • Cover the beans with enough cold water and soak for 8 hours or overnight. Leave the beans on your counter. If it is very warm in your kitchen, you can refrigerate them. Drain the beans and rinse.

Quick Soak Instant Pot Method

  • Place the beans in the Instant Pot and cover with plenty of cold water . Select the Pressure Cook setting at high pressure for 2 minutes.

  • When the timer is done, allow a natural pressure release for 10 minutes. Then, switch the valve from Sealing to Venting to release any remaining steam. Drain the beans and rinse.

Cooked Dried Beans Have A Better Texture Than Canned Beans

While canned beans can be on the mushy side, the consistency of cooked, dried beans is tender and creamy. Almost buttery.

Cooking with dried beans also allows you to control how long you cook them. If you’re making tacos and want your beans to be on the firm side, cook them less. If you’re making something like hummus, refried beans, or soup, cook them a bit longer.

How Do I Store Leftover Cooked Beans

You can cook extra beans in your pressure cooker to have on hand for recipes.

  • Store leftover cooked beans in the refrigerator for 5 days. I keep the beans with a bit of the cooking liquid Just drain before serving.
  • Or freeze prepared beans in 1 to 2 cup portions in freezer safe bags/containers in the freezer for up to 3 months. You can add a bit of cooking liquid to the beans you plan to freeze as well.

How To Add Flavor To Instant Pot Beans

How to make Trini Stewed Red Kidney Beans in the Instant Pot (VEGAN)- Episode 2066

If simple cooked beans in water is your jam, I am not going to hate on your game. But, if you have a little extra time, may I suggest you jazz up your beans in the following ways?

  • Cook beans in vegetable broth instead of water. This adds some more savory flavor. You can even use half broth-half water.

  • Add flavoring agents to the cooking water. I almost always add black pepper and bay leaves. And depending on the cuisine or flavor profile I want, I add some combination of the following:

  • cumin seeds and coriander seeds
  • halved garlic cloves
  • jalapeño or serrano peppers, sliced
  • whole stalks of herbs such as thyme, oregano, and rosemary
  • vegetable bouillon cubes
  • chopped vegetables such as onions, shallots, carrots, or celery
  • Dont skip the salt! Salting the beans while they cook infuses each bean from within with flavor. In contrast, waiting until the end to salt results in beans that are either over salty or lacking in flavor.

    Cooking Instant Pot Beans

Lets get into some example for cooking our favourite beans in the Instant Pot! Here are brief step by step photos showing you how to cook the beans and how they should like.

    Black Turtle Beans

Here Ive soaked my black beans for about 4 hours. Drain the beans, and add them to the Instant Pot. Im going to select Pressure Cook mode for 7 minutes. For this bean and the remaining beans and lentils, set the pressure to High.

Additionally, for all beans and lentils, ensure that your Instant Pot is on Sealing mode and not Venting!

When the timer has run out, allow the pressure to release naturally.

Here is how the beans look cooked. They are still firm and are holding their shape.

    Red Kidney Beans/Rajma

Here I soaked my red kidney beans for 4 hours. Then, I drained the water and added the kidney beans to the Instant Pot. I made these beans for my Rajma Masala recipe. As part of the recipe, Im also adding a bay leaf and a whole cinnamon stick to cook with the beans. Set the Instant Pot to Pressure Cook on High, and cook for 8 minutes.

    Let the pressure release naturally.

Here is how the red kidney beans should look cooked.

    Black Eyed Peas/Lobia

Here I did not soak my black eyed peas, and added them directly to the Instant Pot. I was making Punjabi Lobia. I added water, a whole cinnamon stick, and a bay leaf to cook with the beans. Set the Instant Pot to Pressure Cook on High mode for 16 minutes.

    Chickpeas/Chole

    Pinto Beans

    Let the pressure release naturally.

    Quick Tip: Use Natural Release

With a quick release, youll release pressure from the Instant Pot valve, moving the valve on top of the Instant Pot from sealed to open, after the cooking time is complete. With a natural release, youll allow the pressure to naturally release from the Instant Pot. For beans, I recommend always using a natural release, unless stated to keep the beans soft and intact.
