There was a real grownup quality to her, Gorfinkle said. Her beauty did not overshadow that.
Often described as honey-haired and compared to the elegant actress Grace Kelly, Remick did not appear destined for the movie world.
Remick was characteristically matter of fact about her illness, but upbeat as well, telling Gorfinkle, Im very lucky.

It hit me while watching Baby the Rain Must Fall on TCM. Remick and McQueen were cast as a couple in the 1965 black-and-white film, made by the same team that brought To Kill a Mockingbird to the screen three years earlier.
McQueen appears in a typical bad-boy role: Henry Thomas, a rockabilly singer, fresh out of prison, who aspires to become a star of Elvis Presley proportions. Remick plays his wife, Georgette, who shows up unexpectedly at his small Texas hometown with their young daughter, born while he was serving time.
The story addresses whether Henry will be able to overcome the physical and mental abuse he received growing up to build a future with devoted Georgette and their child. Henry just cant seem to stay out of trouble.
McQueen tries way too hard in the role. He lip-syncs the title song and others, and its comically obvious that its not his voice. But even when hes not looking foolish acting like hes belting out the tunes , his tortured rebel act is a bit much.
But Remick is sublime. While McQueens Henry is getting all worked up, Remick projects calm, concern and compassion as Georgette. You sense McQueen is acting, and his portrayal comes across as superficial. Remicks natural performance implies hidden depths, and its mesmerizing.
Watching her, savoring her work, reminded me of one of the great privileges Ive had in my career: getting to meet and interview her.

LOS ANGELES _ Actress Lee Remick, who specialized in portraying women on the verge of breakdown including her Oscar-nominated role as an alcoholic in Days of Wine and Roses, died of cancer today. She was 55.
Miss Remick, whose career spanned Broadway and television as well as movies, died at 5:15 a.m. in her Brentwood home, said her publicist, Dick Winters. She had been ill for more than two years, suffering from kidney and lung cancer, he said.
This has been a slow slide and it finally came about, Winters said. He said Miss Remick had undergone only physical therapy to cope with the cancer in recent months.
Family members were at her bedside when she died, he said.
Though perhaps best known for her role as the alcoholic wife of Jack Lemmon in 1962s Days of Wine and Roses, she displayed wide range. She played a nervous wreck in The Womens Room, a tough piano coach in The Competition, a nymphomaniac in The Detective and a woman who takes drastic measures to cover up her infidelity in a remake of The Letter.
Lemmon said that knowing and working with Lee will always remain one of the most joyous experiences of my life. She was precious, and certainly the embodiment of grace.
Most recently, Miss Remick starred as the unfeeling mother to Marlee Matlin in the 1989 television movie A Bridge to Silence.
Her television credits were anchored by Toughlove, Ike, Mistrals Daughter, The Blue Knight and Jennie, Lady Randolph Churchill.
Return To Broadway And 1965 Films
Remick next appeared in the 1964 Broadway musical Anyone Can Whistle, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book and direction by Arthur Laurents, which ran for only a week. Remick’s performance is captured on the original cast recording. This began a lifelong friendship between Remick and Sondheim, and she later appeared in the 1985 concert version of his musical Follies.
Remick returned to films with Baby the Rain Must Fall , with Steve McQueen from a script by Horton Foote, and The Hallelujah Trail with Burt Lancaster.
In 1966, she starred in the Broadway play Wait Until Dark under the direction of Arthur Penn and co-starring Robert Duvall. It was a big success and ran for 373 performances Remick was nominated for a Tony award for Best Actress . It was adapted into a successful film the following year starring Audrey Hepburn.

Actress Lee Remick, who portrayed tormented and neurotic women in a string of starring roles, died Tuesday at her Brentwood home after a two-year battle with cancer. She was 55.
Tumors had been found on her kidneys and lungs in 1989 after she fell ill while making a film in France. She had said then: “You think you will be healthy all your life and then it hits you. Then you get angry. And then you say to yourself ‘I’m going to make it. I’m a fighter.’ “
Doctors decided two weeks ago to end all treatment so she could die peacefully, a close friend said.
Ms. Remick, nominated for an Academy Award for her 1962 role as a drunken housewife in “Days of Wine and Roses” with Jack Lemmon, became a spokeswoman for victims of cancer and helped raise money to fight the disease.
Lemmon said Tuesday, “Knowing and working with Lee will always remain one of the most joyous experiences of my life. She was precious and certainly the embodiment of grace.”
The sentiment was echoed by other actors who had worked with her. James Stewart, who starred with her in “Anatomy of a Murder,” said, “Lee Remick made a great contribution as an actress. She was a marvelous person and a friend.”
Although frail in her last months, she insisted on leading a normal family life with her husband, British film producer Kip Gowans, and her children. In one of her last public appearances April 29, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

HOLLYWOOD – Lee Remick, the alluring actress who gained
fame and empathy as the haunting alcoholic in “Days of
Wine and Roses,” died Tuesday of cancer.
The versatile performer, who was known for her talent in
blending the innocence of youth and the sensuality of womanhood
into a single dramatic commodity, was 55.
Miss Remick died of cancer at 5:15 a.m. at her Brentwood
home, with family members at her side, said publicist Dick Winters.
Her death came one day after actor Michael Landon died of
liver and pancreatic cancer.
Tumors had been found on her kidneys and lungs in 1989 after
she fell ill while making a film in France.
“This has been a slow slide and it finally came about,”
Winters said. He added that Miss Remick had undergone only
physical therapy to cope with the cancer in recent months.
In her final public appearances, a very frail Miss Remick
received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame April 29,
and she was honored by the Winston Churchill Society in
a ceremony at the Queen Mary in nearby Long Beach May 4.
She had performed as Churchill’s mother, Jenny Jerome, in
a highly acclaimed PBS miniseries.
Her diversity was evident throughout her lengthy career.

I had just gotten out of the Marines in 1966, and still qualified to get orchestra seats on Broadway to see Wait Until Dark from the USO. I was lucky to see the gripping performance of a beautiful woman. I mused, I would never forget those eyes and I have not. Her performance on stage was superior to the movie rendition. I seem to remember that Lee Remick played in a made-for-television movie entitled The Last Summer co-starring with Hal Holbrook and a young Martin Sheen. The story line is of a same-sex couple one of whom is a divorcee whose young son comes and visits hisfather every summer. The boy runs away when, the last summer, he realizes that his father’s roommate is a man . It was a very subtle and beautiful film– made well before its time– of which I find no trace anywhere! Lee Remick, the elegant actress who illumined dozens of films and many stage and television plays, died yesterday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 55 years old.
The actress died of cancer after fighting the disease for two years, a spokesman for the family said. In one of her last public appearances, a star was dedicated in her honor in April on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Ms. Remick, an uncommonly versatile performer, portrayed characters as disparate as a seductive cheerleader and a tormented alcoholic, along with such historical figures as Lady Randolph Churchill and Eleanor Roosevelt.
Once billed as “America’s answer to Brigitte Bardot,” she was as much admired for her acting abilities as for her bubbly attractiveness. Writing in The New York Times of her performance in the 1980 television movie “The Women’s Room,” John J. O’Connor said, “Lee Remick proves once again she is an uncommonly gifted actress whose somewhat fragile, almost stereotyped good looks tend to distract one from that fact.”
Ms. Remick, who was born in Quincy, Mass., studied dance as a child and won her first acting job at age 16 with a summer-stock company on nearby Cape Cod. This led to a part in a short-lived Broadway comedy, “Be Your Age,” in 1953, several more summer-theater appearances and a string of television roles on “Philco Playhouse,””Hallmark Hall of Fame,””Playhouse 90” and other programs in the mid-1950’s. ‘I Chucked School’
