How Is Hsp Treated
There is no specific treatment for HSP. The main goals of treatment are to relieve symptoms such as joint pain, abdominal pain, or swelling. In most cases, you can use over-the-counter medicines, such as acetaminophen , for the pain. In some patients with severe arthritis, the doctor may prescribe prednisone, a steroid medicine. As mentioned earlier, the rash and joint symptoms usually go away after 4 to 6 weeks without causing permanent damage. Severe problems with the bowels are rare in HSP, especially in younger children. If you have severe pain or severe bleeding in the digestive tract your doctor may prescribe prednisone, or the problem may need to be corrected with surgery. Your doctor will check your kidney function with blood and urine tests even after the main symptoms of HSP disappear. People who develop kidney disease usually show signs within 3 to 6 months after the initial rash appears. If signs of kidney disease appear, your doctor will refer you to a nephrologist, who may prescribe drugs to suppress the immune system. These immunosuppressive drugs may keep kidney disease from progressing to permanent kidney failure.
Pigmentary Changes Or Skin Discoloration
Many reported cases of color change in skins, or hyperpigmentation, happen to people with ESRD. One main reason for skin discoloration is associated with pigments called urochromes and retained in the skin.
Usually, it gets excreted when you have healthy kidneys. Most patients with such condition tend to have a greyish, almost metallic like color skin conditions in kidney failure.
Another discoloration is called uremic frost. It is a white, powdery substance left on the skin surface after the sweat dries. Uremic frost is getting prevented by getting adequate dialysis.
What Is The Long
Most cases of HSP resolve within 4 to 6 weeks without long-term problems. About one in three people has a recurrence of HSP. Recurrences usually occur within a few months and are usually less severe than the initial episode. When the symptoms recur or last longer than 6 weeks, they can be very frustrating and uncomfortable. The long-term outlook is still good, however, as long as your kidneys are healthy. If you develop progressive kidney disease, you will need to have regular checkups to monitor your kidney function. In the early stages of kidney disease, you may not have any symptoms, but blood and urine tests may show that your kidney function is declining. If you continue to have blood and protein in your urine, you are at greater risk of developing chronic kidney disease. Between 20 and 50 percent of children with HSP develop some kidney problems, but only 1 percent progress to total kidney failure. Progression to kidney failure may take as long as 10 years.

What Else Should I Know
Most children with HSP fully recover within a month and have no long-term problems. Kids whose kidneys are affected will need to see a doctor for regular checkups to monitor kidney function.
Some kids who have HSP get it again, usually a few months after the first episode. If it does come back, it’s usually less severe than the first episode.
Dehydration And Dry Skin
People with ESRD often have dry skin, but the connection between dry skin and itching is not so clear.; What has been determined is that dry skin makes the itching worse and more severe.;
Getting less fluid can cause itchy skin to get worse. Hydration is important for kidney health especially if you are on dialysis. The fluid removed during dialysis needs to be replenished. So getting enough hydration between treatments could help lessen the intensity of the itch.;
Dry skin becomes dangerous when it turns into nephrogenic systemic fibrosis . This condition results in the hardening of the skin causing it to become thick and tight. It also can scar the lungs and kidneys.; Too much gadolinium causes this condition. Kidney patients are exposed to this during imaging and dialysis expose kidney patients to this compound. NSF is also responsible for kidney itch.
Some people with kidney disease also have nerve damage that prevents them from sweating enough. This could lead to dry skin and is another reason to keep hydrated.;

Shortness Of Breath After Very Little Effort
Why this happens:
Being short of breath can be related to the kidneys in two ways. First, extra fluid in the body can build up in the lungs. And second, anemia can leave your body oxygen-starved and short of breath.
What patients said:
At the times when I get the shortness of breath, it’s alarming to me. It just fears me. I think maybe I might fall or something so I usually go sit down for awhile.
I couldn’t sleep at night. I couldn’t catch my breath, like I was drowning or something. And, the bloating, can’t breathe, can’t walk anywhere. It was bad.
How Dermatologists Help Patients With Kidney Disease
Kidney doctors, called nephrologists, often care for patients with kidney disease. When a kidney disease affects the skin, a nephrologist may team up with a dermatologist. Some skin conditions that develop due to kidney disease can be difficult to control. For example, if a patient has extremely itchy skin, it may be impossible to sleep through the night. A board-certified dermatologist can help a patient get some relief. This may involve using the right balance of moisturizers and medication that you apply to the skin. Some patients get relief with a treatment called UVB phototherapy.
The right skin care may also help. If the kidney disease is causing extremely dry skin, these tips from dermatologists may help:

Feeling Faint Dizzy Or Weak
Why this happens:
Anemia related to kidney failure means that your brain is not getting enough oxygen. This can lead to feeling faint, dizzy, or weak.
What patients said:
I was always tired and dizzy.
It got to the point, like, I used to be at work, and all of the sudden I’d start getting dizzy. So I was thinking maybe it was my blood pressure or else diabetes was going bad. That’s what was on my mind.
Why Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease Patient Get Itchy Rash
Why stage 3 chronic kidney disease get itchy rash ? Actually, after people fall into stage 3 kidney disease, they will suffer more from this disease, symptoms like itchy rash will occur, they will affect the patients life quality greatly.
What are the mainly causes of skin rash in kidney failure patients ?
There are 3 mainly conditions that may cause skin rash for kidney failure patients.
1. High phosphorus level
When the kidney function is severely damaged, the excess phosphorus cannot be removed by the impaired kidney function, which will cause high phosphorus level. Then patients may experience skin rash.
2. Uremic toxins accumulation
As we know, kidneys have the function of filtering wastes and toxins in blood. However, when the kidneys get damaged, they will fail to work well. And the toxins and wastes in blood will accumulate in body. The uremic toxins in body will cause skin rash or itching.
3. Primary cause
There are some primary causes of skin rash which is caused by the certain kidney diseases such as lupus or some other immune diseases. Skin rash is often a common symptom in these diseases.

What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Uraemic Pruritus
Uraemic pruritus is characterised by daily bouts of itching that tend to worsen at night and may prevent sleep. The itch may be generalised or localised to one area, most often the back, abdomen, head and /or arms. In haemodialysis patients, the pruritus is lowest the day after dialysis and peaks 2 days afterwards.
The skin may appear normal or dry , with few to numerous scratch marks and/or picked sores.

Physical Therapies For Itching In Kidney Disease
There are therapies that can be done to the skin itself. These physical therapies include phototherapy and acupuncture.
Itching in Kidney Disease
Ultraviolet B phototherapy works by stopping the spread of the substances that cause the itch. This therapy also stops inflammation from the immune response.
UVB phototherapy is effective for ESRD pruritus. Some therapies perform better than others.;
Narrow band-UVB phototherapy and UVA alone do not appear to be as effective. Itching came back soon after 6 weeks of NB-UVB. To fully control itching, these therapies need to be done continuously over time. Initially, this type of phototherapy needs to be done three times per week. After that each week an additional one to two sessions needs to be done for maintenance.;
Broadband phototherapy worked the best. Nine out of 10 patients had a marked improvement in itching after 6 BB-UVB treatments. These effects lasted for at least six months.
Acupuncture for Itching in Kidney Disease
Acupuncture is a common complementary therapy for many conditions involving pain. The theory for itch relief is that acupuncture will block itch impulses. Acupuncture generates impulses, similar to nerve messages. In response, an opioid-like substance will be released.
This substance will block the slower C fiber impulses and stop the itch. When compared with the placebo acupuncture helped stop the itch.
Fatigue Being Tired All Of The Time
Why this happens:
Healthy kidneys make a hormone called erythropoietin , or EPO, that tells your body to make oxygen-carrying red blood cells. As the kidneys fail, they make less EPO. With fewer red blood cells to carry oxygen, your muscles and brain tire very quickly. This is anemia, and it can be treated.
What patients said:
I was constantly exhausted and didn’t have any pep or anything.
I would sleep a lot. I’d come home from work and get right in that bed.

Newer Therapies For Itching In Kidney Disease
Uremic pruritus could not just be an isolated skin condition and may have underlying neurological ramifications that need to be addressed. The most likely scenario is that there is an imbalance in the nervous system. The answer to the itch would be correcting these imbalances.
Opiates trigger itching so finding an opiate antagonist may be the solution to this itchy problem. When tested these medications had some success. The best medication for stopping itch was that consisting of both an agonist and antagonist.
The National Library of Medicine has indicated the following as new therapies to stop itching in kidney disease:;
This opioid receptor antagonist is a pain reliever. It can inhibit histamine and other substances that trigger scratching in animal studies. In humans, Nalfurfine is well tolerated with rare side effects. However, it was not helpful to those with really bad itching.
Results had only a mild or no effect with only a third of people feeling that itching intensity slowed. There is still a lot we do not know about this medication.
This medicine is a part opiate agonist and partial opiate antagonist. It can significantly reduce itching among people on hemodialysis.

Swollen Or Puffy Face
Why this happens:
Failing kidneys don’t remove extra fluid, which builds up in your body causing swelling in the face.
What patients said:
My sister, her hair started to fall out, she was losing weight, but her face was really puffy, you know, and everything like that, before she found out what was going on with her.
My checks were always puffy and tight. Sometimes they would even hurt.

What Causes A Kidney Infection
Scientists believe that most kidney infections start as a bladder infection that moves upstream to infect one or both of your kidneys. Most often, the infection is caused by bacteria that normally live in your bowel. The urinary tract has several ways to prevent infection from moving up the urinary tract. For example, urination most often flushes out bacteria before it reaches the bladder. Sometimes your body cant fight the bacteria and the bacteria cause a UTI. If you dont get medical treatment to stop the infection, the bacteria may infect your kidneys.
In some cases, your blood can carry bacteria or viruses from another part of your body to your kidneys.
