Is Beer or Coffee Good For Kidney Stones? Drinks for Kidney Stone Prevention

The most common type of kidney stone is a calcium oxalate stone. This type happens when calcium and oxalate combine in your urine. It can happen when you have high quantities of oxalate, low amounts of calcium and arent drinking enough fluids.

Stones caused by uric acid are also fairly common. These come from a natural substance called purine, which is a byproduct of animal proteins .

Myth : Drinking Soda And Milk Will Cause Kidney Stones

Soda isnt the culprit of kidney stones, rather an ingredient in soda phosphoric acid. This ingredient is what manufacturers use to maintain freshness and add flavor in soda. Regulate your phosphoric acid intake so you are not taking in too much.

Calcium in milk does not cause kidney stones. Many people actually lack calcium which contributes to the formation of kidney stones. Be sure to drink enough milk to ensure a healthy calcium level.

Why Use Baking Soda For Kidney Stones

Regular intake of baking soda supplements in powder or tablets decrease the uric acids and cystine present in the urine to effectively prevent the kidney stones. The kidney stones are crystallized acids that usually get filtered through the kidney and are dismissed by the body through urine.

However, at, these acid crystals grow in large, they fail to come as they get stuck in the urethra and cause renal failure. The baking soda alkalizes the urine to dissolve calcium oxalates or uric acid stones, that block the narrow renal tubes connecting the bladder and the kidney.

Also, the sodium bicarbonate helps to restore the average pH balance of the kidney to prevent the formation of kidney stones and promote its proper functioning

How To Prevent Kidney Stones

Because hydration is key for preventing kidney stones, drinking lots of water will help move them along since they need to be flushed out of the body. We recommend consuming any soda in moderation, and if you must, stick to the light citrus types that have less sugar and chemicals. Please note, its best to avoid soda altogether if kidney stones run in your family.

Alternatives to soda include fresh fruit juices. Orange juice has been studied and shown to decrease the risk of stone formation. Fresh-squeezed lemonade is also great for preventing the formation of kidney stones. These beverages are high in citrate which binds to calcium in the urinary tract, preventing stone formation.

Additionally, improve your diet for optimal urological health in general. Limit meat intake, look for low-sodium options when shopping for food, and make sure you get your daily recommended amount of calcium. This will keep oxalate levels in check.

Effect Of Sugar In Carbonated Beverages

Carbonated beverages are typically sweetened with sugar in the form of high-fructose corn syrup. A study published in 2010 in the journal √ĘKidney International√Ę reported that the high amounts of HFCS in soda can elevate uric acid levels. Your kidneys must work harder to clear this acid from your blood. The study found that compared to individuals who consumed less, drinking more than one carbonated beverage per day significantly increased the risk of chronic kidney disease.

NEW YORK Certain diet sodas may have the potential to prevent the most common type of kidney stone, if new lab research is correct.

In the study, researchers found that the diet versions of several popular citrus-flavored sodas like 7Up, Sunkist and Sprite contained relatively high amounts of a compound called citrate. Citrate, in turn, is known to inhibit the formation of calcium oxalate stones, the most common form of kidney stone.

The findings, reported in the Journal of Urology, suggest that diet sodas could stand as an extra weapon for some people prone to forming kidney stones.

Kidney stones develop when the urine contains more crystal-forming substances such as calcium, uric acid and a compound called oxalate than can be diluted by the available fluid. Most kidney stones are calcium-based, usually in combination with oxalate.

One reason that certain people are prone to being stone-formers is that their urine contains relatively little citrate, explained Dr. Brian H. Eisner, a urologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and the lead researcher on the new study.

Women Who Drink 2 or More Diet Sodas Daily Double Their Risk of Kidney Function Decline, Study Shows

Nov. 2, 2009 Diet soda may help keep your calories in check, but drinking two or more diet sodas a day may double your risk of declining kidney function, a new study shows.

Women who drank two or more diet sodas a day had a 30% drop in a measure of kidney function during the lengthy study follow-up, according to research presented Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology in San Diego.

Thirty percent is considered significant, says researcher Julie Lin, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a staff physician at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston. Thats especially true, she says, because most study participants had well-preserved kidney function at the start of the study.

Patients with stone disease could benefit from drinking diet soda. New research from the University of California, San Francisco suggests that the citrate and malate content in commonly consumed sodas may be sufficient to inhibit the development of calcium stones.

Increased alkalinity is proven to augment citraturia, a known factor for calcium stones. Malate increases the amount of alkali delivered. Researchers measured the citrate and malate content of 15 popular diet sodas. The researchers found that Diet Sunkist Orange contained the greatest amount of total alkali and Diet 7-Up had the greatest amount of citrate as alkali.

“This study by no means suggests that patients with recurrent kidney stones should trade in their water bottles for soda cans,” said Anthony Y. Smith, MD, an AUA spokesman. “However, this study suggests instead that patients with stone disease who do not drink soda may benefit from moderate consumption.”

The study was presented at the 104th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association .

Then What Exactly Causes Kidney Stone

How Much Water Should We Drink To Remove Kidney Stones

Kidney stones form when the balance of urine constituents including salt, water and minerals change. The type of kidney stone one gets depends on the nature of change. For instance, calcium kidney stones form when the level of calcium in urine changes. Your urine balance may change for the following reasons:

  • Failure to drink enough water: The substances in your urine including salts and minerals may form a stone if you do not take enough water.
  • Diseases: Inflammatory bowel disease like Crohns disease and gout can affect the urine balance.
  • Kidney stones may run in a family over several generations.
  • Overproduction of hormones in the parathyroid is a rare cause of kidney stones. It may increase calcium levels in urine and probably cause calcium kidney stones.

What You Drink Affects Your Risk For Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are painful, but the good news is there are ways to prevent them. The most common cause of kidney stones is simply not drinking enough water. You should strive to drink 8 eight-ounce glasses of water every day to keep your body properly hydrated. Certain soups and vegetable juices are very high in sodium, so keep an eye on labels. If you drink a lot of soda, now is the perfect opportunity to cut the bad habit! Sodas that are acidified with phosphoric acidthink Coca Colahave been linked with an increased risk for kidney stones and kidney disease. Dehydration And Energy Drinks

Another major contributor to the formation of kidney stones is dehydration. Uric acid stones are the type of kidney stones that form when you are dehydrated. It also forms if you have gout, eat a high-protein diet or if you are genetically predisposed. Energy drinks have been shown to contribute to dehydration because of the caffeine amount they contain, which makes you urinate frequently and makes dehydration more likely. If you drink energy drinks with any of the aforementioned dehydration causing food and drinks, you increase your chances even more.

When I asked my thoracic surgeon about using Vaseline, he told me that in his long career, he has never seen a case of lung disease attributed to this.

A: A pharmacist wrote to us to recommend an OTC product, AYR Nasal Gel, for moisturizing dry nasal passages. This water-based product should be found next to the AYR Saline Spray in the nose-drop section of the pharmacy. If you dont find it, the pharmacy should be able to order it.

All ACE inhibitors and ARBs like valsartan and losartan can interact with this antibiotic to raise potassium to lethal levels . Too much potassium can cause cardiac arrest that is hard to distinguish from a heart attack.

Say No To That Diet Soda

An important new finding has been reported from the Nurses’ Health Study, which is a long term study that found that diets high in sodium were hard on the kidneys, and gave other information about heart disease, cancer risk factors, and the use of hormone treatments after menopause.

Now doctors conducting this study have reported that drinking a lot of sugar-free cola beverages or other carbonated soft drinks might have effects on health. Kidney health may be one of those things. Kidney function declined over two decades in women who drank several diet sodas a day, according to researchers from the prestigious Nurses’ Health Study. In fact, compared with women who did not drink diet soda, soda-drinking women had a 30% greater reduction in kidney function in 20 years. More than 3,000 women have participated in the study for 20 years or more now the women’s median age is 67 years.

At the start of the study, all the women had healthy kidney function, according to Julie Lin, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Drinking one diet soda daily did not decrease kidney function more than normal. Drinking two or more diet sodas, though, appeared to cause problems.

With some 37 million Americans suffering from chronic kidney disease, it is a major public health problem. The study with the nurses will have to be confirmed by other studies. But in the meantime, water may be the best thing to drink.
