There are certain situations in which observation or medical treatment is not advisable for the kidney or the ureteric stone. These are the situations when the stone is creating some sort of complex clinical scenario and is leading towards a complication and observation or medical treatment alone might not be the best treatment for the patient to save the function of the kidney and sometimes the life of the patient. Observation or only medical management is not advisable if the stone has got following characteristics:
· The kidney stone is causing severe obstruction leading to unmanageable symptoms like severe pain and vomiting.
· A kidney stone or a ureteric stone leading to obstruction of the urine flow and causing swelling of the kidney which is likely to compromise the function of that kidney.
· Any kidney stone which is associated with urinary tract infection and specially if the patient has fever as presenting symptom.
· Kidney stone or ureteric stone which is found to be in the only functioning kidney of the patient. This happens if the patient has got a single kidney by birth or the other kidney has been removed or is not functioning for some other reason.
· A stone which has been under observation or medical treatment for more than a couple of weeks will probably be better managed with surgical intervention because the longer the stone stays inside the urine pipe more it damages the tissues.
Is Milk Good For Kidney Stones
Yes. Calcium-rich foods such as milk, yogurt, and some cheese and oxalate-rich foods are beneficial for preventing kidney stones. This is because oxalate and calcium from the foods are more likely to bind to one another in the stomach and intestines before entering the kidneys, make it less likely that kidney stones will form.

Lifestyle Changes To Manage Kidney Stones
Kidney is the organ which filters out excess waste, salt, calcium and toxins from the body. Cumulation of salts, minerals, calcium and uric acid can result in formation of hard stones known as kidney stones. A kidney stone can be as small as a dot, but they may grow in size because of more build-up of uric acid and other minerals.
Kidney stones can travel from kidneys through the ureter to the bladder. Once the stone enters the bladder, it results in fevers, chills, urinary tract infection and a lot of pain, especially in the belly area or at the back.
Stones of smaller sizes can be passed through urine without causing much pain. But passing of larger stones can be a painful process.
How Are Kidney Stones Treated
Once diagnosed, your healthcare provider will first determine if you even need treatment. Some smaller kidney stones may leave your system when you urinate. This can be very painful. If your provider decides that you do need treatment, your options include medications and surgery.
Medications. Medications may be prescribed to:
- Your healthcare provider may recommend that you take an over-the-counter medication like ibuprofen or, if youre in the emergency room, an IV narcotic.
- Manage nausea/vomiting.
- Relax your ureter so that the stones pass. Commonly prescribed medicines include tamsulosin and nifedipine .
You should ask your healthcare provider before you take ibuprofen. This drug can increase the risk of kidney failure if taken while youre having an acute attack of kidney stones especially in those who have a history of kidney disease and associated illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity.
Surgery. There are four types of surgeries used to treat kidney stones. The first three are minimally invasive, meaning that the surgeon enters your body through a natural opening , or makes a small incision.

What Are The Kidney Stones Disease
Kidney stones are small mineral deposits that form inside your kidneys. They are solid and hard, and are made up of calcium, oxalate, and uric acid.
The stones break loose and our body then tries to pass them through our urine. Some stones are extremely small and you dont even notice them larger stones push into the ureters, which are the narrow ducts that lead to our bladder, and get stuck.
Fifty years ago, kidney stones were a rare occurrence. Due to dietary changes, lifestyle changes, and an increase in toxins in our water, soil, and air, kidney stones are happening more frequently in adult populations, and sometimes even in children as young as five.

Diet And Calcium Stones
Follow these guidelines if you have calcium kidney stones:
- Drink plenty of fluids, particularly water.
- Eat less salt. Chinese and Mexican food, tomato juice, regular canned foods, and processed foods are often high in salt. Look for low-salt or unsalted products.
- Have only 2 or 3 servings a day of foods with a lot of calcium, such as milk, cheese, yogurt, oysters, and tofu.
- Eat lemons or oranges, or drink fresh lemonade. Citrate in these foods prevents stones from forming.
- Limit how much protein you eat. Choose lean meats.
- Eat a low-fat diet.
Do not take extra calcium or vitamin D, unless the provider who is treating your kidney stones recommends it.
- Watch out for antacids that contain extra calcium. Ask your provider which antacids are safe for you to take.
- Your body still needs the normal amount of calcium you get from your daily diet. Limiting calcium may actually increase the chance that stones will form.
Ask your provider before taking vitamin C or fish oil. They may be harmful to you.
If your provider says you have calcium oxalate stones, you may also need to limit foods that are high in oxalate. These foods include:
- Fruits: rhubarb, currants, canned fruit salad, strawberries, and Concord grapes
- Vegetables: beets, leeks, summer squash, sweet potatoes, spinach, and tomato soup
- Drinks: tea and instant coffee
- Other foods: grits, tofu, nuts, and chocolate

How Are Kidney Stones Normally Treated
The treatment of kidney stones varies, depending on how large they are and how serious. Small stones usually pass with little to no pain, and you can take a pain reliever, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, for any discomfort.
Larger stones over 20mm, however, may have to be removed using more serious methods such as scopes or surgery. There are many different kinds of surgeries and other invasive procedures that are performed for kidney stones. These can require hospital stays of a few days up to a few weeks.
There are many home remedies for kidney stones you can try yourself, but most of these dont end up working. Another problem with these home remedies is that they are often used when the kidney stone is already causing pain and is quite large. By the time someone tries to cure the kidney stone with one of these remedies it is too late. Also, the cause hasnt been fixed so stones will more than likely return.

Causes Of Kidney Stones
There are many different causes of kidney stones. Most stones form when calcium in your body combines with one of two substances: oxalate or phosphorous. Stones also form from uric acid, a substance that forms as the body metabolizes protein.
Certain drugs promote kidney stones, such as Lasix , Topamax , and Xenical, among others.
Additionally, pain medications, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, ulcer medications, and even antibiotics can cause kidney and liver damage. This damage makes it more difficult for your body to remove toxins, leading to kidney stones.
