How Much Do Kidneys Cost?

Have you ever wondered which of your organs is the heaviest? If you guessed your brain or lungs, you are wrong.

The largest organ of the human body is the skin. Yes, the skin is an organ. And it not only consists of the outer layer we can see, but has a total of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous tissue . The thickness of the skin differs throughout the body for example, its thin underneath the eyes and thick on the soles of your feet.

So, how much does our largest organ weigh? According to The Journal of Investigative Dermatology the skin of most adults weighs roughly 10kg, depending on factors such as gender, weight and age. If you were to spread the skin out on a flat surface, it would cover about 2m².

But what about your internal organs? Heres a breakdown of how much they weigh. Note that these figures will differ from person to person.;;

1.;The liver

A healthy adult liver can weigh up to 1.6kg, which makes it the largest solid, non-porous organ in the body. Its about the size of a rugby ball. The liver holds 10% of the bodys blood and pumps nearly 1.5l per minute.

2.;The brain

The adult human brain accounts for 2% of our total body weight and weighs roughly 1.5kg, once again depending on one’s size and age. There’s an ongoing debate about the link between brain size and intelligence. A number of studies have reported moderate correlations between brain size and intelligence.

3.;The small and large intestines

4.;The heart

5.;The kidneys

According to South Dakota State University Extension, the expected yield for retail cuts from beef carcasses ranges from 55% to 75%, depending on the fatness, muscling of the animal, and the type of cuts you produce. The carcass weight is usually between 600 and 900 pounds.

Steaks usually come from a steer or a heifer , while meat from cows is usually ground up into processed meats.

If you had to estimate the mass of the average human cell, you could cheat and look it up on Wikipedia, or do a back-of-the-envelope calculation with a few assumptions about the mass and volume of a person and the size of cells . But researchers need more precise measures of a cells mass so they can detect small changes as it grows or responds to its environment. In Physical Review Letters, Kevin Phillips and colleagues at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland report a simple way to measure the mass of individual red blood cells with a commercial microscope.

We Vary Quite A Lot On The Inside And That Can Be A Blessing For Instance If You Have A Large Liver You Can Save More Than One Life

How significant are the individual differences inside us? We have different noses and the size and colour of our eyes vary. But do our intestines, kidneys, hearts and livers look alike? Or do their sizes, weight and colours differ from one person to another?

We asked Inge Morild, a pathologist and professor at the University of Bergen.

Different on the inside

Internal differences are just as big as external ones, both in shape and size. There are also a variety of colours, says Morild.;

Most of us have the same basic gear and everything is placed in the same internal spots. But already at birth this body equipment differs individually.

The size, shape and colour of internal organs can vary.

Twice the size

Consider two new-born boys crying out as they take their first breaths. They both might weigh 3,500 grams. Their inner organs are probably the same size too.

These tiny bodies will become adults with much greater differences on the inside as well as they outside.

If one grows up to be a skinny 60 kilo wimp and the other becomes a 120 kilo bruiser, their inner organs will grow correspondingly, explains Morild.

A large heart

The big man can have a heart that is twice the size of the smaller guy, he continues.

Several of our organs are adapted to the size of our bodies in this way. The brain is the organ that is most alike in all of us.

The male human brain weighs an average of 1,450 grams and womens brains average 1,300 grams.;

Colours on the inside

Its a light grey.

The Link Between Weight And Ckd

The science shows that people who are obese are more likely to develop kidney disease.

Whats more, being overweight increases the risk for diabetes and high blood pressure. In turn, high blood pressure and diabetes are the two primary causes of kidney disease. Research also shows that being overweight can also directly impact your kidneys because the excess weight forces the kidneys to work harder and harder and bear the burden of filtering wastes above the normal level.;

Over time, the extra work increases your chances of getting kidney disease.;

The extra weight can also activate the bodys fight-or-flight response, which releases hormones that may increase sodium retention and raise blood pressure while also making it harder for the body to remove excess sugars from the blood, which causes diabetes. Whats more obesity-related inflammation can also impair the kidneys function.

How Much Do Your Organs Weigh

Michael Menna, DO, is board-certified in emergency medicine. He is an attending emergency medicine physician at White Plains Hospital in White Plains, New York and also works at an urgent care center and a telemedicine company that provides care to patients across the country.

Organ weight is a complex subject. There are many factorsincluding body weight, height, lean body mass, and racethat cause organ weights to vary widely.

To figure out accurate ranges for organ weights, a lot more data need to be collected. Furthermore, this data needs to come from different types of people. Right now, such data are not routinely collected.

Organ weights used for reference need to come from forensic autopsies, which are usually performed in cases of suspicious, sudden, or traumatic death where a dead person’s organs are otherwise healthy.

Diseased organs assessed during hospital autopsies, however, shouldnt be used to determine reference values because the disease can actually affect the weight of an organ. Furthermore, the number of autopsies performed is plummeting, giving researchers fewer opportunities to access and assess organ weights.

Despite being poorly appreciated and minimally researched, organ weights and size are still used by healthcare professionals to determine the cause of death and disease as well as to guide certain treatments.

What Is A Kidney Stone

Mary Poppins how much do you weigh?

A kidney stone is a hard object that is made from chemicals in the urine. There are four types of kidney stones: calcium oxalate, uric acid, struvite, and cystine. A kidney stone may be treated with shockwave lithotripsy, uteroscopy, percutaneous nephrolithomy or nephrolithotripsy. Common symptoms include severe pain in lower back, blood in your urine, nausea, vomiting, fever and chills, or urine that smells bad or looks cloudy.

Urine has various wastes dissolved in it. When there is too much waste in too little liquid, crystals begin to form. The crystals attract other elements and join together to form a solid that will get larger unless it is passed out of the body with the urine. Usually, these chemicals are eliminated in the urine by the bodys master chemist: the kidney. In most people, having enough liquid washes them out or other chemicals in urine stop a stone from forming. The stone-forming chemicals are calcium, oxalate, urate, cystine, xanthine, and phosphate.

After it is formed, the stone may stay in the kidney or travel down the urinary tract into the ureter. Sometimes, tiny stones move out of the body in the urine without causing too much pain. But stones that dont move may cause a back-up of urine in the kidney, ureter, the bladder, or the urethra. This is what causes the pain.

Kidney Function And Kidney Disease

The primary task of the kidneys is to maintain the fluid balance in the body. They accomplish this task through increasing or decreasing the amount of fluid excreted in the urine. Electrolytes like sodium and potassium are an important component of fluid management. When you eat or drink liquids, the fluid eventually makes its way to the kidneys. A complex mechanism of fluid and electrolyte transfers, mediated by hormones and other chemicals, results in the movement of fluid into the kidneys and bladder, from which the urine is excreted. Kidney disease damages these mechanisms.

What Is Living Donation

Living donation takes place when a living person donates an organ for transplantation to another person. The living donor can be a family member, such as a parent, child, brother or sister .

Living donation can also come from someone who is emotionally related to the recipient, such as a good friend, spouse or an in-law . Thanks to improved medications, a genetic link between the donor and recipient is no longer required to ensure a successful transplant.

In some cases, living donation may even be from a stranger, which is called anonymous or non-directed donation.
