Where In The Body Is The Liver And Kidneys

What Do They Do

How to detox liver and kidney naturally? – Dr. Saritha Nair

The liver and kidney are both essential organs for the bodys metabolism, homeostasis and detoxification.

  • The liver performs more than 500 vital functions, but most notably converts nutrients into energy filters the blood of toxins before it continues to the rest of the body produces bile to aid in digestion removes excess sugar from the bloodstream stores carbohydrates and much more.
  • The kidneys filter the blood for water-soluble waste and toxins to be excreted control mineral content in the bloodstream regulate blood pH and more. In fact, they filter about 200 liters of fluid every single day.

What Are The Causes Of Liver Failure

Liver failure occurs when damage to the organ causes it to improperly function and shut down. Acute liver failure is a sudden condition, often brought on by overdose or poisoning. Chronic liver failure is the result of a long-term, progressive degeneration, and is frequently caused by alcohol abuse, malnutrition, and cirrhosis. Other causes of liver failure include certain diseases, such as hepatitis and hemochromatosis.

Some causes of liver failure are sudden, one-time conditions that cause the organ to overload and shut down. One of the most common causes of liver failure is acetaminophen overdose, which occurs when a person takes too many over-the-counter painkillers that contain acetaminophen. Certain prescription medicines and homeopathic herbal supplements are also known to cause liver failure, and may need to be avoided by anyone with a history of liver problems. Ingesting toxic substances, such as poisonous mushrooms, can also overload the liver and is one of the most dangerous causes of liver failure.

Liver And Kidney Histopathology

Normal structure of the cortex and medulla was observed in the kidney of control rats . The animals exposed to Cd and EtOH separately as well as in combination showed similar changes, but of different intensity, in the renal tubules and glomeruli . Hypertrophy of epithelial cells and degeneration of epithelia of renal tubules with infiltration of mononuclear cells, dilation of glomeruli as well as hyperaemia of medullary and cortical parts with mononuclear cell infiltrates were evident in all animals treated with Cd and/or EtOH. The most advanced change after EtOH exposure was the dilatation of capillaries filled with erythrocytes both in the cortical and medullary parts of the kidney. In the rats treated with Cd alone or in combination, an enlargement of renal glomeruli and epithelial cells of the I-row tubules in the cortical part of the kidney were found a few renal tubules showed single epithelial cells desquamated to their lumen . Mononuclear cell infiltrates were observed in some places of the medullary part of the kidney, and at these sites the inflowing cells blurred the tubular structure . Generally, the histological changes in kidney cortex and medulla of Cd and Cd + EtOH groups were more serious than those observed after EtOH alone .

Protect And Strengthen Your Detox Organs

Kidney And Liver Body System

In order to detox your body, your detox organs need to be able to function.

Your kidneys need to be able to filter out toxicants, your liver needs to be able to transform fat-soluble toxics into water-soluble substances, your intestines need to be able to carry the toxics from your liver through twenty-five feet of intestine, your skin needs to be able to sweat out toxicants, and your lungs need to be able to breathe to exhale toxic gases.

All your detox organs need to be in optimum condition, but given the amount of toxic chemicals your body has been exposed to, they probably need some help.

Fortunately, there are many things you can do to protect your detox organs from damage and strengthen each individual organ.

This is a very important step, because your body actually wont release the toxic chemicals from storage in fat, bones, and other places until your detox organs are in good enough shape to eliminate them.

Again, because each body is unique, you may need to try different detox support methods and products to find which work best for you.

What Is A Liver Detox

In order to rid your body of toxins that can build up in your tissues, fat, joints, and brain, your body must excrete them through the complex filtration system of your kidneys and liver. A liver detox is designed to support and promote this process.

But, how do you safely detox your liver? There are a growing number of trendy headlines and quick-fix plans for liver detox cleanses and diets, but whats even more overwhelming is the confusion around how to do one of these safely. Furthermore, its not a detox diet or cleanse that you need its a dietary reset that enhances and supports your bodys own natural detoxification processes.

When it comes to the natural detoxification process, the ability of a person to detox varies significantly, depending on many factors from overall health to nutritional status. Supporting your bodys natural individual processes can help it regulate its hormonal and fluid balance, provide energy to your cells to promote a higher functioning metabolism, and improve your overall brain function.

    Cirrhosis Of The Liver

Cirrhosis is characterized by severe scarring of the liver. When the damaged tissue accumulates enough to interrupt liver functioning, it puts your health in serious jeopardy. When scarring starts to outnumber and overwhelm healthy tissue, the liver begins to fail. Sometimes this stage is the first one that presents symptoms noticeable by the individual, including jaundice, dry mouth, muscle cramps, increased ease of bleeding, buildup of fluid in the abdomen , peripheral edema, and reduced brain functioning .

What Happens When The Liver And Kidneys Shut Down

When the kidneys shut down the body is unable to excrete waste and maintain its electrolyte imbalance, MedicineNet states. People who suffer from liver failure may experience bleeding disorders, excessive fluid on the brain, infections and an increased risk of kidney failure, according to Mayo Clinic.

When someone experiences liver failure excessive fluid in the brain causes pressure that can move brain tissue and deprive it of oxygen. Additionally, it is no longer able to offer the clotting factors that prevent blood from being too thin, resulting in bleeding disorders. One of the first places where this occurs is the gastrointestinal tract. It also makes people vulnerable to infections, and places extra pressure on the kidneys that results in them beginning to fail.

As the kidneys are responsible for excreting waste and maintaining an electrolyte imbalance, the patient may enter metabolic acidosis. The kidneys are no longer able to remove ketones from the blood, making it more acidic. Low sodium bicarbonate and high lactic acid levels have the same effect. As a result, the patient may develop ketone breath, which has a fruity scent. He or she may also become fatigued, lethargic, confused and drowsy. Eventually, his or her heart may begin to suffer, including arrhythmias such as tachycardia, edema and congestive heart failure.

    Maintaining A Healthy Liver

The best way to avoid liver disease is to take active steps toward a healthy life. The following are some recommendations that will help keep the liver functioning as it should:

    • Avoid Illicit Drugs: Illicit drugs are toxins that the liver must filter out. Taking these drugs can cause long-term damage.
    • Drink Alcohol Moderately: Alcohol must be broken down by the liver. While the liver can moderate amounts, excessive alcohol use can cause damage.
    • Exercise Regularly: A regular exercise routine will help promote general health for every organ, including the liver.
    • Eat Healthy Foods: Eating excessive fats can make it difficult for the liver to function and lead to fatty liver disease.
    • Practice Safe Sex: Use protection to avoid sexually transmitted diseases such as hepatitis C.
    • Vaccinate: Especially when traveling, get appropriate vaccinations against hepatitis A and B, as well as diseases such as malaria and yellow fever, which grow in the liver.

    Difference Between Liver And Kidney

liver and kidney position in human body

The difference between liver and kidney is due to the following properties:

    • First is the part of body function, to which they relate.
    • Second is the location of both the organs.
    • And, third is the number of these organs in a human body.

The liver is the organ, which is the part of our digestive system, and the kidney is the part of our excretory system. The liver and kidney location differs, as a former is located on the right portion of the abdominal cavity , and the latter is located on the posterior side of the abdominal cavity .

Why Is Kidney And Liver Health Important

Liver and kidney health is so important for skin, eyes, circulation, energy levels, detoxification, vitamin storage and absorption, and so much more. Thats why it is crucial to take kidney and liver health seriously if you are looking to lead an all-around healthy lifestyle. Minimizing alcohol and sugar, committing to a healthy diet and exercise, taking tried and true herbal supplements, and ample water intake are all key ways to support your kidney, liver and body as a whole from the inside out.

Not taking care of your kidney health and liver health can result in some uncomfortable symptoms. For example, when the kidneys are in poor health, signs like fatigue, difficulty concentrating, swelling in the ankles, puffiness around the eyes, low appetite, muscle cramps and more may occur. When the liver is not functioning at its best, yellowish skin and eyes, swelling in the legs, itchy skin, abdominal pain, vomiting and more may occur, depending on the severity.

    Fibrosis Of The Liver

Fibrosis is liver scarring. While the liver is one of the most unique organs thanks to its ability to heal itself , long-term damage from repeated intoxication or uncured or incurable infections can still build up. When scar tissue begins to take the place of healthy and functional liver tissue, it diminishes the livers ability to function. Again, this progressive damage is not always detectable, and the longer it persists, the more it affects the individuals survival rate.

How Are The Liver And Kidney Connected

Viscerally speaking, the upper pole of the right kidney is located just behind the liver.

Functionally, the liver and kidney are most notably connected via a series of reactions called the urea cycle, also known as the ornithine cycle, where:

  • The liver converts nitrogenous waste into a less toxic substance called urea
  • Urea is released from liver cells into the bloodstream and transported to the kidneys
  • The kidneys filter urea and other toxic waste from the blood to be excreted from the body as urine
  • How Does Blood Flow Through My Kidneys

Human body Lesson 8 Kidneys and Liver

Blood flows into your kidney through the renalartery. This large blood vessel branches into smaller and smaller blood vessels until the blood reaches the nephrons. In the nephron, your blood is filtered by the tiny blood vessels of the glomeruli and then flows out of your kidney through the renal vein.

Your blood circulates through your kidneys many times a day. In a single day, your kidneys filter about 150 quarts of blood. Most of the water and other substances that filter through your glomeruli are returned to your blood by the tubules. Only 1 to 2 quarts become urine.

    How Do My Kidneys Work

Each of your kidneys is made up of about a million filtering units called nephrons. Each nephron includes a filter, called the glomerulus, and a tubule. The nephrons work through a two-step process: the glomerulus filters your blood, and the tubule returns needed substances to your blood and removes wastes.

What Organ Is The Last To Shut Down When You Die

In most cases, dying is a gradual process and the organs begin to fail and eventually shut down. Physiological death happens when the vital organs no longer function. The affected organs/systems are:

    • The digestive system is the first to be affected. When the dying process begins there is a loss of appetite and thirst.
    • The brain will also lose function and shut down. This is due to a lack of oxygen attributed to labored breathing and the eventual cessation of breathing.
    • The kidneys arenât able to process fluids as before and will also shut down during the dying process.
    • The heart and lungs are generally the last organs to shut down when you die. The heartbeat and breathing patterns become irregular as they progressively slow down and fade away.

Also, it is thought that hearing is the last sense to go during the dying process. Donât assume your loved one canât hear you. It is strongly encouraged that you speak to your loved one even if they are unconscious.

Importance Of Preparation For Signs Of Death

Not every person will exhibit each one of these signs, but most will show several. Since we donât know when death will exactly occur, people often hold vigils by the bedside so that they will be present as the person passes on. Although many people do not want to talk about death, it is a part of life. Understanding and being prepared for the uncomfortable and sometimes scary signs of approaching death will give you the chance to help your loved one and be at peace with the situation yourself.
