An important new finding has been reported from the Nurses’ Health Study, which is a long term study that found that diets high in sodium were hard on the kidneys, and gave other information about heart disease, cancer risk factors, and the use of hormone treatments after menopause.

Now doctors conducting this study have reported that drinking a lot of sugar-free cola beverages or other carbonated soft drinks might have effects on health. Kidney health may be one of those things. Kidney function declined over two decades in women who drank several diet sodas a day, according to researchers from the prestigious Nurses’ Health Study. At the start of the study, all the women had healthy kidney function, according to Julie Lin, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Drinking one diet soda daily did not decrease kidney function more than normal. Drinking two or more diet sodas, though, appeared to cause problems.

Top 5 Healthy Drinks For People With Kidney Disease

Many of us love reaching for a refreshing, ice cold drink on a hot summer day, or cozying up with a warm beverage during the dead of winter. But did you know that the drinks you choose to quench your thirst can have a tremendous impact on your kidney health?

As a nephrologist and Kidney Kitchen® contributor, drink-related questions are some of the most common questions I get. Whether you need to watch out for certain nutrients or have fluid restrictions that you need to stick to, there are ways to enjoy healthy drinks for your kidneys. Remember: each person with kidney disease should stick to the food and fluid plan you discussed with your doctor and dietitian, as it addresses your specific kidney function, fluid needs and electrolyte imbalances . Here are five of my favorite drinks that are generally healthy for people with kidney disease:

  • Black coffee: Every year, there seems to be a new study that publicizes the benefits of coffee. Drinking coffee my favorite morning beverage may help protect you from developing kidney disease and keep your kidneys filtering at a higher level for a longer period of time. Unfortunately, not all coffee drinks are healthy, and if you have kidney disease, you may be limited in what you can add to your coffee. Drinking black coffee, instead of coffee with high-potassium and high-phosphorus milk or high-calorie sugary drinks, will be your best bet.
  • Start with water that is not quite boiling .
  • Add a tea bag and steep for 24 minutes only.
  • Spindrift Lemon Sparkling Water

If these cute cans don’t draw you in, the nutrition label sure will. While each of the 11 flavors varies slightly, all of them are low-cal and low-sugar with natural ingredients. Lemon, in particular, is our favorite flavor, and it just so happens to be sugar-free. Spindrift is the first and only sparkling water brand in America made with real fruit, which is picked from family farms, squeezed, and canned. This makes for a bubbly beverage that’s slightly pulpy and totally delicious.

The Canada Dry brand of Ginger Ales uses real extract from grated fresh root powder to give their product its signature spiciness while still remaining gluten free .

    Soft Drinks With Potassium Citrate

Processed foods and beverages often contain non-nutritive substances added to enhance the products in some way, be it for flavoring, coloring or preserving. Potassium citrate is an additive found in soft drinks as well as candy and ice creams. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration deemed it GRAS — generally recognized as safe — in 1977.

Pros And Cons Of Carbonated Water

Generally speaking, Harvard Health Publishing says that soda water or seltzer is a much better nutritional choice than sugary sodas. High soda intake is linked to chronic health problems like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, and diet soda is associated with health risks, as well.

Reviewing the pros and cons of carbonated water versus flat water can help you decide which beverage to go for. Like flat water, plain carbonated water contains zero calories. However, flavored versions may be higher in calories.

The carbonation of soda water is both a pro and a con. It can make you feel more full, which is helpful for satiety. However, the fullness may prevent you from drinking more, which is why flat water is a better option if you are dehydrated.

One potential link between carbonated water and kidney stones is the sodium content of drinks like club soda. The USDA estimates that a 12 fluid ounce can or bottle of club soda contains almost 75 milligrams of sodium, as well as 17 milligrams of calcium. In comparison, a 12 fluid ounce bottle of flat water provides just over 7 milligrams of sodium, 36 milligrams of calcium and 7 milligrams of magnesium.

    Blackberry Diet Dr Pepper

Why Diet Sodas Are Bad? â Beautyzoomin

Blackberry Diet Dr. Pepper: Adding blackberry syrup to your favorite drink is refreshing on a hot summer day.

Diet Dr. Pepper has been my favorite drink for the longest time. Yes, I know the diet part of any drink isnt the healthiest for you, but I have made my peace with it.

This particular drink was all I drank while I was pregnant with our youngest. Who knows if that is why he ended up the smallest baby I had. All I know is that I craved Diet Dr. Pepper the entire pregnancy.

And I havent stopped drinking it. 11 years later it is my choice of pop. I even used it in these Cherry Dr. Pepper Jello Squares earlier this year. What else can I make with it???

Ok, quick questiondo you call it pop or soda??? I grew up calling it soda in the East, then I moved to the Midwest and became a pop convert.

This summer I discovered all the syrups at Sonic that you can add to your pop or slushies. For some reason the blackberry stood out to me that first day as I read through the list. One sip of it added to my Diet Dr. Pepper, and I was totally and completely hooked.

So hooked that I did a search online to see where I could buy blackberry syrup for my house. Torani carries so many different flavors of syrups. So, to make it worth the shipping I ordered the blackberry and a few others. I was so impressed with how quickly they showed up at my front door. I have also seen these syrups in World Market and Gordmans if those stores are near you.

Reasons To Avoid Diet Drinks During Pregnancy

Did you know ? Drinking one diet drink a a day can triple your risk of dementia and strokes. Plus a recent study found that daily diet soda consumption increased womens risk of delivering a high birth weight baby by 60 per cent versus women who never touch the stuff. This study was also the first to follow these children, up to age seven and determined that they were almost twice as likely to become obese. Unfortunately choosing sugar free or diet products is not always a healthier options as they contain toxic chemicals.

    Cravings for Coke

I have a confession to make I craved frozen coke during my pregnancy. I very never used to drink, coke, diet coke, coke zero, and diet drinks. I am also not a big coffee drinker, I much prefer tea. However, once I became pregnant gee, it was hard not to pull into that drive-thru and grab myself a frozen coke and yes often I would tell myself that the diet option was a healthier choice. Which as mentioned above it is NOT !

One of the only things that stopped me was that my OB advised that listeria could be present in the mix as frozen coke it is sitting at a similar temperature to soft serve ice cream ! So add this to the foods you want to avoid while pregnant.

Sprite Zero Doesn’t Have Any Health Perks

As per Is It Bad For You, Sprite soda first made its way into stores in 1974 and remains popular today. However, one of the major reasons we believe that chugging Sprite Zero isn’t worth it is because it doesn’t have any health benefits at all. Additionally, diet sodas like Sprite Zero can be pretty disappointing when it comes to getting rid of cravings, and may make you reach out for more food simply because you don’t feel satiated after drinking a can.

Furthermore, another problem with Sprite Zero is that it contains an artificial sweetener called aspartame, and that’s been reportedly connected to several health issues. Aspartame, it’s been said, can lead to certain types of cancer and may cause symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, seizures, palpitations, and more. While nobody is sure about these side-effects, the ingredient remains very controversial. To be on the safe side, it may be best to stay away from aspartame for now.
