Why Is Knowing About Potassium Important

Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Kale, Brussel Sprouts CKD Diet Renal Foods 1 Cup Daily

In some children with CKD, the kidneys do a poor job of removing potassium from the blood, and blood potassium levels can become very high. Too little or too much potassium can cause heart and muscle problems. Children with CKD should have their blood checked regularly to make sure their potassium levels are normal. Your childs food and drink choices can affect his or her potassium level. Talk with your childs health care team about how much potassium your child should have.

If the health care team suggests your child needs to lower the amount of potassium in his or her diet, you can help your child by

  • avoiding high-potassium fruits and vegetables
  • tracking the portion sizes of fruits and vegetables that have moderate amounts of potassium
  • checking with your health care professional about using salt substitutes, which can be very high in potassium
  • talking with your child’s dietitian about choosing foods your child likes that have the right amount of potassium

What Clinical Studies For Ckd Are Available For Child Participants

You can view a filtered list of clinical studies on CKD in children that are federally funded, open, and recruiting at www.ClinicalTrials.gov. You can expand or narrow the list to include clinical studies from industry, universities, and individuals however, the National Institutes of Health does not review these studies and cannot ensure they are safe. If you find a trial you think may be right for your child, talk to your childs doctor about how to enroll.

Facts About Kidney Stones

  • Calcium doesnt cause kidney stones. In moderation, eating calcium can actually help prevent stones from forming.
  • Its more common than you think. One in 10 people will develop a kidney stone in their lifetime and 85 percent will develop them again within 10 years. Men develop stones more often than women.
  • Save that stone. If you pass a stone, save it for testing. There are different types of kidney stones. By knowing what specific type of stone you had, we can tailor prevention recommendations for your individual needs.
  • One size does not fit all. Kidney stones can be as small as a grain of salt or as big as a golf ball. Different treatments are recommended for the various sizes of stones.
  • Prevention is key. Changes in diet and medication, if indicated, are about 90 percent effective in preventing new stones from forming.

    Vegetarian Diets And Gut Microbiota

A previous study reported a significant decline in butyrate-producing bacteria in advanced kidney disease . A more recent study, however, found a decrease in acetate, with no changes in propionate or butyrate levels, but an increase in valerate concentrations in advancing kidney disease. In this study, higher levels of valerate were associated with prevalent coronary artery disease. Although the mechanisms of this association remain speculative, the study provides evidence for impaired gut-microbiota-derived SCFAs with advancing CKD .

Dietary prescriptions in CKD results in a poor dietary fiber intake, slowing the intestinal transit time, and reducing the production of SCFA, which together with the formation of ammonium hydroxide increases the pH of the colonic milieu, further aggravating gut dysbiosis and favoring an efficient protein fermentation. In the absence of fermentable carbohydrates, protein fermentation induces the formation of potentially deleterious byproducts, such as sulfides, amines, ammonia, and phenols that can accumulate in CKD and exert their harmful effects on the host . In contrast, in vegan or vegetarian patients there is a reduced abundance of pathobionts and a greater abundance of symbionts .

However, it is unclear whether adhering to a vegetarian/vegan diet can promote a stable shift toward a healthier gut microbiota and maintain their long-term benefits in CKD.

    Pretzels Chips And Crackers

Ready-to-eat snack foods like pretzels, chips, and crackers tend to be lacking in nutrients and relatively high in salt.

Also, its easy to eat more than the recommended portion size of these foods, often leading to even greater salt intake than intended.

Whats more, if chips are made from potatoes, theyll contain a significant amount of potassium as well.

    SUMMARY

Pretzels, chips, and crackers are easily consumed in large portions and tend to contain high amounts of salt. Additionally, chips made from potatoes provide a considerable amount of potassium.

Why Are Clinical Trials With Children Important

Children respond to medicines and treatments differently than adults. The way to get the best treatments for children is through research designed specifically for them.

We have already made great strides in improving children’s health outcomes through clinical trialsand other types of clinical studies. Vaccines, treatments for children with cancer, and interventions for premature babies are just a few examples of how this targeted research can help. However, we still have many questions to answer and more children waiting to benefit.

The data gathered from trials and studies involving children help doctors and researchers

    • find the best dose of medicines for children
    • find treatments for conditions that only affect children
    • treat conditions that behave differently in children than in adults
    • understand the differences in children as they grow

    Progression Of Chronic Kidney Disease

KETO Friendly Recipe: Braised Green Beans and Brussel Sprouts

Previous studies suggest that consumption of fruits and vegetables by reducing the dietary acid load and improving metabolic acidosis may slow the reduction of eGFR in patients with CKD . As mentioned above, diets rich in vegetables and an increase in total fiber intake are associated with reductions in the progression of CKD, attributed to several causes: reduced consumption of nutrients such as protein, sodium, or acids, increased potassium over sodium intake, decreased phosphorus load, and increased intake of fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and chemicals such as sulforaphane that have been linked to improved outcomes in patients with CKD .

    3.2.1. Alkalinizing Effects

3.2.2. Dietary Sodium and Blood Pressure

A vegetable-based diet, but not NaHCO3, reduced the systolic blood pressure in CKD patients, suggesting a possible advantage of this diet poorer in sodium over alkali administration as a strategy to reduce dietary acid levels for kidney protection. These results encourage long-term studies to determine whether a vegetable-based diet, similar to NaHCO3, is an effective addition to blood pressure reduction and inhibition of ACE to slow the decline of GFR in hypertensive nephropathies as well as in other nephropathies .

Why Is Knowing About Phosphorus Important

Phosphorus can build up in the blood of children with CKD. Too much phosphorus can weaken your childs bones.

Phosphorus is found naturally in foods rich in protein and is also added to many processed foods. Phosphorus added to food may cause your childs blood phosphorus levels to go up more than phosphorus found naturally in food. A dietitian can help you find ways for your child to get enough protein without getting too much phosphorus.

    Magnesium And A Vegetarian Diet

    Looking for a kidney

Regarding the magnesium content in the diet, it is abundantly found in green leafy vegetables, beans, legumes, and nuts, while processed foods are poor in this cation. In CKD or ESRD, the usual dietary restriction of potassium may also lead to a low magnesium intake. In contrast, a vegetarian diet meets the daily nutrient requirement for HD patients according to the NKF .

Why Is Knowing About Sodium Important

Roasted Balsamic Brussels Sprouts – PCOS Friendly

Sodium is a part of salt. Different children with CKD have very different sodium needs. In some children with CKD, too little sodium can lead to dehydration and poor weight gain. In other children, too much sodium may cause high blood pressure. What your child eats and drinks can help control the amount of sodium in his or her diet.

The amount of sodium your child needs will depend on the type of CKD your child has and how severe it is, your childs age, and other factors. You may need either to limit or add sodium to your childs diet. Talk with your childs health care team about how much sodium your child should have.

If your childs health care team suggests lowering the amount of sodium in his or her diet, you can help your child by

    • buying fresh fruits and vegetables
    • choosing unprocessed meats instead of processed foods
    • cooking from scratch
    • using spices, herbs, and salt-free seasonings instead of salt
    • looking for products labeled “sodium free” or “low sodium”
    • draining and rinsing canned foods to removed salt

    Oranges And Orange Juice

While oranges and orange juice are arguably most well known for their vitamin C content, theyre also rich sources of potassium.

One large orange provides 333 mg of potassium. Moreover, there are 473 mg of potassium in 1 cup of orange juice .

Given their potassium content, oranges and orange juice likely need to be avoided or limited on a renal diet.

Grapes, apples, and cranberries, as well as their respective juices, are all good substitutes for oranges and orange juice, as they have lower potassium contents.

    SUMMARY

Oranges and orange juice are high in potassium and should be limited on a renal diet. Try grapes, apples, cranberries, or their juices instead.

Processed meats are meats that have been salted, dried, cured, or canned.

Some examples include hot dogs, bacon, pepperoni, jerky, and sausage.

Processed meats typically contain large amounts of salt, mostly to improve their taste and preserve flavor.

Therefore, it may be difficult to keep your daily sodium intake to less than 2,300 mg if processed meats are abundant in your diet.

Additionally, processed meats are high in protein.

If you have been told to monitor your protein intake, its important to limit processed meats for this reason as well.

    SUMMARY

Processed meats are high in salt and protein and should be consumed in moderation on a renal diet.

Pickles, processed olives, and relish are all examples of cured or pickled foods.

Usually, large amounts of salt are added during the curing or pickling process.

Effects Of A Vegetarian Diet On Inflammation And Oxidative Stress

Low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress are common findings in CKD, and have been associated with the progression of renal dysfunction, as well as other complications of CKD, such as atherosclerosis, cardiovascular risk, or protein-energy wasting .

As previously mentioned, the dysbiotic gut microbiome in CKD favoring pathobionts overgrowth, together with the increased intestinal barrier permeability, contributes to the systemic inflammation and oxidative stress in CKD patients through the translocation of bacteria and bacterial products into the systemic circulation .

The type of diet is key to the modulation of inflammation. Diets rich in fruits and vegetables, vitamins, and antioxidants have been associated with lower levels of inflammatory markers . In contrast, a western diet stimulates the overgrowth of proteolytic bacteria, which results in dysbiosis, the accumulation of proteolytic-derived uremic toxins, and may promote CKD progression.
